We were travelling in family (2 adults and 2 children). Have stayed in Quinta de Tourais for four nights in April 2012 during Easter.
The room we were given was spacious and could easily accommodate an extra bed for the kids. Furniture was mainly made of traditional well recovered pieces.
Common facilities include a large comfortable living room with a fireplace and a well equipped kitchen that guest can use to prepare their own meals. We have used it twice for dinner.
Hosts are very welcoming. Breakfast was served on the side of the house that is used by the owners and is made of different types of bread, ham, cheese, homemade jams, freshly squeezed orange juice, milk and coffee. Breakfast was served around a large table where you can interact with the hosts and the other Quinta guests.
Rate was quite competitive – namely as we were staying across the Easter season -, yielding very good value for the money.
Only suggestion for improvement is regarding the internet. There’s free wifi but its not accessible on the rooms – just on the inner patio or on certain areas of the common living room.
The Douro region offers really outstanding landscapes and the way the wine culture has shaped the Douro geography is unique. Quinta de Tourais is 2km across the river from Régua, right on the heart of the Douro region. You need/should go by car, so that you can travel along the river, either into the greenery to the West or up river well into the schist hills of the higher Douro.
For very good value homely food I recommend “O Meu Gatinho” in Cinfães – a nice drive down river. For bird eye views of the Douro Valley, São Leonardo da Galafura. And for the quintessential drive along the Douro, go from Quinta de Tourais to Pinhão along the Douro South Margin and then up to Sabrosa across vineyards. End up in Solar de Mateus (close to Vila Real).
