A great option near Guimaraes and not far from Porto. An impressive XIX century property with rooms housing traditional decoration, panoramic wallpapers, and very charming bedrooms. José, the manager, was extremely attentive and friendly providing hints of the regions and attending all our requests.

Room Tip: There is one room at the ground floor which is big and in front of the beautiful balcony. However, i...

This picturesque building has been in the same family for centuries. The estate makes the local vinho verde. The rooms are not luxurious but comfortable; there is no TV, phone or air con. Breakfast served on the verandah in fine weather is plentiful; breads, cake, fruit and beautifully cooked scrambled eggs. Evening meals can be provided with a few hours notice and these are very good.
There is a good pool in the extensive gardens.
The nearby village is not attractive, but Guimaraes is approx 15 mins away by car, I think there is a bus. This has a lovely historic centre, many good value restaurants and a great evening atmosphere especially when Portuguese football team are playing!

Room Tip: All the rooms are different, there are 2 ground floor rooms, but these have a few steps up to them.

This is a working vineyard and still family home. House is amazing - very comfortable and relaxed. 10 minute drive into town centre, no distance at all and I return to this oasis after a days shopping or sightseeing is a real treat.
Breakfast is incredible - endless fruit, breads, fresh juice and coffees.
Great for people wanting a home from home no fuss and relaxing break.

This place is realy a nice surprise for us. The room is very unique and each one has its own style. It is not 5 start comfort but offers some personalities. The environment is great and got a nice garden.

The lady at reception is very helpful and friendly. It makes you feel like being home in a special way. The breakfast is excellent with both cold and warm dishes.

The only minus points I may say is that there is no wifi connection inside the room and the building is not well isolated. Thus you may hear the neighbour in shower in the early morning.

But as a whole it is a wonderful place to stay.

If you want to be the lord of the manor for a weekend you should stay in Casa de Sezim. You will be welcomed by the owner who will do everyting to make you feel at home in this marvellous house, full of beautiful objects and furniture, surrounded by the handpainted 18th century wall paper that makes you feel like you are in an historical movie set. But the family photos and memorabilia scattered around the rooms gives you the feeling that you are not an ordinary guest but a family guest. The rooms are all different and do not expect the Hilton. But if you love old furniture and the best cotton linen you will feel at home. Breakfast with fresh squeezed orange juice and other treats is a nice way of starting the day. The garden is beautiful and the veranda is the place to end the day, drinking a glass of wine and listening to the birds and the water from the fountain. During the day you can explore the beautiful town of Guimaraes and participate in several events organized by the European Capital of Culture 2012.

We chanced upon Casa deSezim. Travelling by train we originally dismissed the idea when tourist info said it was out of town. We rang in desperation when we were unable to find a place in the Old town. What a lucky break.
Casa De Sezim is one the most memorable experiences we had in Spain.
Understated luxury. Superb hospitality, delicious, generous meals and wine....and to top it off a living museum to be explored at will. The hand painted 18th century wallpaper and great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather's swords in the common lounge were an astounding experience for people who come from a country where white settlement is but 200 years old.

(...and only a 10 minute taxi ride from town).
