Owner description: At Alberto Sampaio Museum everything combines to leave the visitor wanting to return here. We get thrilled without knowing why. What is certain is that visitors feel serenity and left enchanted by the beauty of the set. This is the only national museum that opens its doors during the night, in the months of July and August. Visit this "museum at night" is an experience you will never forget. This museum certainly deserves, "all visits and visitors makes swears to come back here every time we're in Guimaraes" (Jose Saramago). Want to try?

“A special place”
Reviewed October 1, 2013

We loved this place. It’s peaceful, beautifully laid out and with an interesting mix of exhibits. Well worth the EUR3 entry (and half that price for over 65s). It was very quiet despite the torrential rain outside and we left feeling strangely calm and sort of glowing. There is an eclectic mix of paintings, sculpture, ceramics etc as well as lovely architecture. Non flash photography is allowed.

“Precious museum. Must see”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

This museum contains probably one of the most precious artifacts of Portuguese history.: the gown that King Joao I used in 1385 during the legendary battle of Aljubarrota. Besides this, the museum contains many other important artifacts and paintings, many of religious nature, that makes this probably one of the most important museums in Portugal.

“A marvelous museum located in Guimarães, European City of Culture 2012. It deserves a visit!”
Reviewed July 2, 2012

This is a marvelous museum in the center of a wonderful city, European Culture City 2012. It deserves a calm visit to watch the lot of history inside and the marvelous building, near Nossa Senhora da Oliveira square and church. The Educational services is very interesting and leaded by dedicated people with a large artistry. The cloister is a wonder. The reception very nice. Visit it and enjoy the historic richness, mainly the objects offered by D. João I, the silver crib, the religious statues, the paintings. All the collection is well structured and well shown in an enchanting place which deserves a visit. All the year you can see also any exhibitions that are done in it, concerning a lot of subjects and interests. This museum is open at midnight in summer.

“One of those small museus you'll wish to return”
Reviewed January 30, 2012

Small museums are much more pleasant to visit than the big ones. This one is by far one of the best I've ever visited: beautiful portuguese art from the Middle Ages to later centuries and some very interesting historical objects. Highly recommended.
