“First class in every way!”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

My wife and I stayed in a suite during our two nights at the Pousada and were thrilled that we selected this property. When making reservations, I found that the other pousada in Guimaraes (inside the historic center) was already booked, so we stayed here by default. I'm very glad that we did. The staff was among the most genuinely courteous, helpful, and service-oriented in any hotel I have stayed (we found the Portuguese to be naturally warm and friendly throughout the country). From Joao the porter to Vitor at the front desk staff to the entire restaurant staff....every single employee was first class. The property itself is very beautiful. Both of the nights we were in town it was very rainy (the problem with travelling in March!), so we did not get to enjoy much of the surrounding grounds. One thing that is a must to find the property, however, is a good GPS! If you are coming in from the west or from the historic city center, there is god signage directing you to the pousada. But if you are coming in from the east or south, you are flying blind. We utilized the GPS on our phone and had no problem. But relying solely on a map won't get you there. The property is tucked away in the hills southeast of town, so you will need to make a 5 minute drive to get into the historic center. Ate in the restaurant for one of our dinners and both breakfasts, and found everything excellent!

Room Tip: Paying a little more for the suite will provide you a beautiful view of the town below. Not sure th...

What an amazing Pousada!!!!! High above the city stands a beautiful former Monestary. When you see the exterior you know you are in for a treat! It's like walking into a museum, with beautiful public rooms, wide halls, low lighting and great staff. The ceilings are beautiful through-out and the Pousada is furnished to make it old shoe comfortable. It's a romantic place and I just can't get over the feeling you have spent the night in a museum. The restaurant was great, with perfect, friendly service. The prices were a bit high, but with the discount we go it was on the money. The quality of the good, the deor, and service made for a wonderful stay. The price during low season is a bargain with a senior discount and other special discounts if you watch their website. The grounds were vast and spectacular. In the warmer weather it must be just wonderful to take a walk at sunset! WOW!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: If you are looking for a cheap lunch go near the University. Lot's of cheap eats for 4 euros + d...

To stay here is a "privelege", in such a magnificent monastery, with beautiful living/eating rooms, and very comfortable (sleeping) rooms.
Great view to Guimarães. Very pleasant garden.
The pool must be refreshing in the summer, with view to the city as well.
Very friendly and helpful staff.

Room Tip: You can either choose a room facing west - thus seeing Guimarães from the hill, or east, thus facing...

If you want to have a enjoyable stay in terms of rest and good food (home made) in a nice and calm place near an interesting historical center (about ten minutes by car) I suggest you this Pousada.
At the city center you have a large choice of sweet shops selling "conventual" specialities (like "toucinho do céu", "tortas", ...).

I am a UK tour operator - stayed in hundreds of hotels around the world. I don't normally write reviews as one hotel is very much like another. However, this hotel is exceptional in every way. A historic building in a beautiful setting above the UNESCO world heritage city of Guimaraes - the place oozes charm and culture. The service of all the staff was exemplary. Nothing too much trouble. They were all very knowledgeable and helpful and the wine waiter certainly is an expert in his field. From the very beginning our greeting at the desk set the tone for our stay. Friendly, outgoing, perfect English. We were asked to nominate a member of staff for Employee of the Month. Actually any one of the lovely people we met would qualify. After surly Spanish waiters and pompous Parador primadonnas this was a very welcome change! Enjoy the restaurant for what it is - a sample of beautifully presented Portuguese cuisine. Enjoy the wines for what they are - quality wines from local producers. Enjoy the building for what it is - a remarkable modern re-creation with architectural features dating back to the ninth century. Enjoy the views of the city from the terrace, wander through the botanical gardens and be at peace with yourself and your surroundings. As an antidote to modern concrete hotel monoliths it really does not get much better than this...

Room Tip: All rooms have views over the city - the newer part of the Hotel has larger rooms, but the older (sm...
