“Lovely space, but prices at restaurant/bars are out of line”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

We stayed at this Pousada for two nights while visiting Guimaraes. The place is stunning, and like other reviewers have noted, like staying at a museum. But there were a few things that turned us off:

1. The prices for the bars and dinner were out of line with other places in Guimaraes. In Portugal, you can normally get a nice espresso for EU$0.60 - here, it was several Euros. The dinner entrees cost EU$30 each, which seemed way too high, considering you could eat at a wonderful restaurant in the city for EU$10-$15 entrees. I'm not sure why they feel like they can charge so much, but it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

2. The free wi-fi is limited to 30 minutes at a time. If you ask the front desk staff nicely, they'll give you another 30 minutes (controlled by these little tickets with passwords), but in this day and age, not having unlimited free wi-fi is very dated.

3. Although the setting is lovely, it would have been nice to have some of the staff offer tours so that we could better understand the historic building. There didn't seem to be much engagement on the part of the staff to help you understand the historical significance of the place.

4. The pool was freezing. There was no effort to heat it up, which is annoying, considering this place isn't cheap.

5. The pousada isn't in the center of town, which is annoying. They could offer a shuttle to get to the center.

6. The breakfast seemed very tailored to American/British tastes rather than offering Portuguese food. They had drip coffee, which I didn't see anywhere else, and things like scrambled eggs and sausages. We ate much better at smaller B&Bs.

Otherwise, the service was very good, but all in all, given the high prices of the food, the lack of free wifi, the so-so breakfast and the location, we would actually not recommend this place to a couple who wants to be more in the center of things. You end up always having to go to the city to eat, so it's just not worth the cost.

We spent two nights in this Pousada. It is like staying in a museum or palace. The spaces are awe inspiring and furnished in character. We stayed in a monks room but we think there has been a little updating since occupied by a monk. Room is quiet and well furnished again in character. All facilities are there but do not expect a resort hotel. It is a formal hotel with formal staff who reflect the formality of the surroundings. It is the experience of a lifetime to stay here and try to stay two nights to absorb the atmosphere.

Room Tip: One of the rooms in the old section

The four stars are generous and based on the history, the setting, the atmosphere and authenticity and the incredible space it occupies. It's very much like living in history.
However our room on the first floor felt and looked old, and worn. The curtains were torn and gave off a cloud of dust, the carpet nearing a rotting state and should be an embarrassment for the owners.
The breakfast buffet was adequate, we didn't have dinner as it seemed over-priced compared to the town.
Service was adequate and helpful, but lacked the jump that the Porto pousada had.

We stayed at this pousada for two nights during our 10 day holiday in northern Portugal.
The old building is beautiful, with wonderful original features. We were a little disappointed that our room was in the new wing, not the old monastery, but it was large and well appointed. The gardens were very attractive and we were able to walk through the wooded grounds behind the hotel. One lovely suprise was the wonderful pool area - we weren't expecting a pool. The breakfasts were a plentiful buffet. We ate one dinner in the hotel which was not quite as good as we hoped. We also found all the staff a little reserved, but perhaps this was to be expected in the hushed atmosphere of an ex-monastery.
The town of Guimaraes is well worth a visit. It has very attractive old buildings, an interesting (free!) castle and currently (summer 2012) some engaging art installations for the European Year of Culture.

Tricky to find and further out of town than we anticipated, we still really enjoyed this pousada. Run by the Pestana group (we love their palace in Lisbon) we had a large room facing the front which easily accommodated an extra bed. Unfortunately it was a smoking room and you could tell. Reception later explained they had no non smoking rooms when we checked in but they should have given us the option of waiting. They also recommended walking into town - don't! It's much longer than 10 mins, with hardly any pavements and through a very uninspiring part of town. Dinner was enjoyable, once our waiter grudgingly discovered they could do the ham and cheese child pizza without cheese. The pool is in a stunning situation and worth a few hours relaxation - as are the lovely grounds. We would go back.

Room Tip: We stayed in the new wing which was fine. If you don't want a smoking room, clarify when you che...

as josef from antwerp rightly states in a recent review there are two pousadas where the santa marinha is a little on the outskirts of guimaraes offering beautiful views over the city the grandeur of this one is very special
worth while a longer stop service is nice and friendly
sometimes some problems with the plumbing but what do you want ? this is a medieval construction and problems are quickly settled
