Something which you must do when visiting Braga is to take the elevator to Bom Jesus. This ancient elevator has been operating since 1882 and is really remarkable. It operates by water. There are two carriages which operate simultaneously. The one at the top is filled with over four thousand litres of water, this weight then lowers the carriage by cable to the bottom which in turn lifts the carriage from the bottom to the top, of Bom Jesus. Amazing.
The day I chose to explore the area a local elderly man with his two large dogs, an alsatian and an alaskan malamut . Clearly a fairly frequent occurrence the dogs were impatient to get on and immediately flopped to the floor at the front of the elevator to ride it to the top. Of course it was the perfect photo opportunity for passengers with cameras.
Ride the elevator to the top, the views over Braga are beautiful; then walk the steps back down.
The cost is 1.20 Euros one way
