We stayed the first two weeks of October for our honeymoon and had our two small children with us. The resort is lovely spotlessly clean and very nicely laid out. The staff are wonderful - never a miserable face in sight throughout our stay from any of them! All so attentive and fantastic with the children. Carlos in the dining room became a firm favourite and went out of his way to accommodate any needs we had. He became a surrogate grandad to the girls and they even had a few tears on saying goodbye!
We have booked to return in September to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and are literally counting the days!!!

Just returned from a 7-night stay at the Pestana Porto Santo Hotel at the beginning of the 2013 season. This was our fourth visit to this fabulous hotel with terrific location and facilities, manned by a staff that are second to none!

GENERAL
On arrival at the hotel, we were greeted by a welcoming party made up of staff members from the very obliging Manager, his colleagues and respective departmental members who handled the check-in procedure with the utmost of ease. It didn’t take long before you were into holiday mode at this most relaxing and quiet location.
We booked through Thomson who schedule Monday flights only, from Gatwick and Manchester. It is not an exclusive resort to Thomson or British guests and as on previous visits, an international eclectic mix of other nationalities use the hotel. Allowance must still be made for the differences in language, culture, diet and preferences. The hotel and staff go the extra mile to accommodate everyone, where possible within the resources available. Don’t be put off by the negative review comments. Invariably dis-satisfied guests for some inexplicable reason still will not ask for any special requirements or needs they may have. This is not the place to ‘suffer in silence’ for the sake of simply making a request!

ROOMS
Yet again our room was the same as on our previous visit. Light, colourful, contemporary in design with a fabulous fitout, balcony and lovely bathroom. We did note that over the winter closure, changes have been made with disabled facility rooms now available and subtle changes continuing to be made to the suites at the hotel 'on the run'. As was the previous cases, rooms are cleaned daily to very high standard by very methodical and helpful chambermaids with daily towel changes if required.

FOOD
An impressive array of snacks and meals are served in four locations at the hotel.
The main buffet style Mares restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast has a full array of traditional delicious hot and cold options; including the ‘Full English’ breakfast. Show cooking is available for the best omelettes in the world. Whilst not on show, my wife’s passion for poached eggs is fulfilled by asking one of the helpful staff who return minutes later with eggs as requested. No fuss, no bother just plain service.
The Mares main buffet restaurant surprises many of the British guests. The Head Chef who has been with Pestana for many years has travelled the world and gained experience of many diet cultures brought out in his fabulous food offering. The selection may not be as vast as some of the competitors but a greater emphasis is placed on the quality of the cuisine on offer. The balance of all the offerings is superb and a great improvement on last year. Fish still plays a major part in Portuguese cuisine although the balance now appears to have been evened out with the meat options. Furthermore, the liberal use of garlic and herbs has been subtly reigned in to suit the more fastidious traditional English guest. Those of us who prefer the heavier use of garlic only need to ask and the situation is remedied. Pasta, vegetarian options and a wonderful array of salads are always on offer. A show cooking facility is available for freshly prepared alternatives in front of you. If plain and simple food is your preference or food allergies exist, do make the restaurant staff or reception aware, in advance, for your options to be fulfilled. Currently the Mares restaurant is very crowded. Moves are in hand to expand and ease the pressure later in the year. Watch this space!!!
The Luigi Italian restaurant was unchanged and as popular as ever. A traditional Italian pizzeria serving pizzas, pasta and risottos. It's hard to improve on the best!!! Booking in advance through reception for this restaurant is a must.
The Mediterranean a’la Carte restaurant still exists as before but with a more extensive menu. Personally created by the Head Chef, the menu has been extended to offer 8 alternatives of starter, fish main, meat main and dessert courses. What a gastronomic delight! As on previous visits you are served and attended on by friendly and efficient waiters and waitresses. The surcharge this year has been increased to €20.00 pp is made. Don't be put off. The experience is worth every cent. Don’t miss it whatever you do! You must book in advance through reception for this ever-popular restaurant.
The Dunas poolside snack bar provides fabulous snacks, salads and drinks throughout the day completing the food facilities on offer.

BARS
The Sunset bar is still the perfect evening facility. It’s an idyllic bar for a pre-dinner drink, overlooking the beach and watching the sun setting. The bar becomes the main entertainment area where the resident Animation Team performs in the evening.
The pool bar provides all daily drinks, coffees throughout the day until 7.30pm extending to 10.00pm during the summer months.

ENTERTAINMENT
An in house Animation Team provide a comprehensive daily programme of activities for all ages. Daytime action starts around the pool area with a daily exercise regime. Other games and activities continue to lunchtime on a changing daily rota. At lunchtimes an animation dance routine is performed poolside, with some of the waiters joining in the fun with those guests wanting to also join the spectacle! Afternoon ‘workshop’ interest activities have been introduced to appeal to both children and adults alike.
The in-house Animation staff members are also responsible for the Kids Club.
A daily changing programme of entertainment commences in the evening in the Sunset Bar culminating in the weekly Sunday Star Show with singers, dancers and trapeze artisans performing their spectacular routine.
What more could anyone want or expect from their holiday I wonder?…………………………

**STOPPRESS**
Unbelievable as it may seem, the Pestana Porto Santo will from 1st. July 2013 be accompanied by it’s brand new, sister hotel Pestana Columbus opening right next door and sharing the same magnificent beach location.
Accessed by a separate entrance, a majestic reception and canopied amenity area greets you. A totally new concept, so different in all respects, the Columbus initially offers 100 rooms of modernistic design, fabulous luxury accommodation. Massive rooms fitted out with the latest of ‘chic and couture’ accompaniments – Curved baths, walk in shower room, massive beds, soft tone fabrics, contrasting decoration and in pride of place, Bang and Olufsen flat screen TVs. All in all, it’s a completely different style and room experience to the contemporary, colourful Pestana Porto Santo. 2,3 and 4 bedroom apartment style family suites will be following next season.
The fine dining and intimate atmosphere on offer at the Columbus is fantastic! A stunning waiter service cocktail bar and lounge opening onto a beach terrace one side, with a quadrangle enclosed terrace to the other. Low key and intimate entertainment performed by traditional live artists for your extended pleasure.
A fabulous main themed buffet restaurant with emphasis on show cooking and interaction with your individual chef cooking your meal is offered. Additionally, a separate detached stand-alone themed romantic Madeiran restaurant offering ‘catch and meat of the day’ specialities for your selection, cooked in front of you by your personal chef with the choice of romantic al-fresco terrace dining adjoining the dune area or cosy, warm and sensual internal dining room.
A similar extra themed Moroccan a’la Carte restaurant is being readied for later in the year along similar lines
Three extra swimming pools and sun terraces externally, for adults and children alike. A new ‘state of the art’ indoor family swimming pool with Jacuzzi area for family use is all ready to go!
Everything is as good as the Pestana Porto Santo, but in a totally different, more modernistic and updated way.
The final bonus - the same extended Staffing team, Managers, Catering staff are at the Columbus as well. Both hotels are joined by ‘umbilical’ pathway with passenger buggy services running regularly to enable both Pestana Columbus and Pestana Porto Santo guests to share their own all-inclusive facilities, restaurants and ambience.
Two for the price of one – Pestana at its best!!!!!

CONCLUSION

Yet again we had a marvellous repeat stay. My wife and I are returning again later in the year towards the end of the season. It is a firm favourite of ours and would unreservedly recommend the hotel to any potential guests. We are both really looking forward to sharing the Columbus experience as well.

On arrival we recieved a glass of fizzy wine each and everyone was so friendly so after our journey it was very welcome.
The resort right on the most beautiful of beaches was extremely clean and well laid out. Every day we had clean towels and such a friendly attitude by all the staff including the management.
I would recommend this hotel but probably would not go back as although very quiet within the hotel and the local town there just wasn't enough to do.
We didn't have the best of weather so there was little to do except drink in the bar or room, it would have been nice to have a film show or indoor activities but the indoor theatre was shut during the day.
My biggest crticisim was the food which was very repetitive and not enough selection (having compared this to other four/five star resorts) and because of this a week was more than enough. It would have been nice to have a selection of restaurants without additional payments as well. I must point out this was the first week of the season and perhaps it improves as time goes on. On arrival we were given a garden room and again unfortunaely my ears were badly affected with the flight so I had left my husband to register us. The garden rooms I understand are standard so an additional cost is imposed for those overlooking the pool. I really always prefere a balcony so it wasn't until the next day we unpacked and moved to a balcony suite at a cost of 90 euros which to be fair was reasonable. Be aware when booking through the agent that you make this request. There were additiional costs for the a la carte restaurant of 20 euros.
I think the entertainment staff were absolutel;y amazing and give them full marks for their beaming faces, enthusiasm and energy.
On a closing I would recommend Mario the Thomson rep as the best I have ever met, funny and very informative a really great guy.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a first floor suite overlooking the pool, but try and get a balsony with a roof!

Porto Santo is an island close to Madeira where I was invited for a meeting. It is not an easy place to reach as it may entail a two airplane trip from Lisbon or just one if you are lucky. This hotel is not properly a five star hotel but it looks like. Rooms are nice, spacious and confortable. Most of them with a private terrace on the garden. The swimming pools are large and very quiet during my permanence but I guess that on summertime plenty of children may render them less pleasant.
The food is not great but acceptable. What it makes the stay particularly enjoyable is the extreme kindness of the staff. All of them are prompt, smiling and efficient and render everything easy.
The beach facing the hotel is large and clean.

Room Tip: may be you can get a room with seeview which are the best ones

We visited last July after looking around for ages. What a find fantastic resort, accommodation, food and the beach is superb. We didn't want to leave. Booked again for this year as have others that we met last year. Just don't want this place to get to popular and be spoilt!
