“A Church with a View”
Reviewed April 2, 2014

However this little church has no amazing decoration, the memorial of Charles, the last ruler of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the central location, and the breathtaking panoramic view to the Funchal Bay makes it the most visited landmark of Monte.

The last monarch of the House of Habsburg spent his last days in exile in Madeira far from the storms of his once Central-European lands. Some years ago he was beatificated by the Roman Catholic Church, so pilgrimage is more frequent now. (However it was September, the place was a bit overcrowded.)

Nice cafes and amazing gardens surround the site with fields of agapathus and other exotic flowers. The traditional toboggan run also starts close to the church, do not miss.

“Peaceful Church with Excellent Views”
Reviewed February 7, 2014

This is a 500 year old church in very good condition. It is not elaborate but has a lovely atmosphere around it. Be respectful of those praying there. Walk up the stairs for great views across Funchal on a fine day. It costs nothing but there is a donation box. If you are in Monte, it's definitely a nice place to go.

Visited with a tour group. First I was impressed of the history, then impressed with the view in which this church is located. Absolutely beautiful and breathtaking.

“A Monte 'must see'”
Reviewed January 28, 2014

If you visit Monte (and you should) make some time to see the impressive Church of Our Lady of the Monte. There are a large number of steep steps up to the church itself but it is worth the effort as the views are superb (including looking down on the famous Monte toboggan run) and the church itself if very cool and tranquil.

“A beautiful, peaceful church”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

Not a religious person myself, yet this little mountain top chuch has beauty, simplicity and serenity worth seeing. The stone steps up are very steep and the fact that some are a bit loose make you pray even if you normally wouldn't. The best part is that you can climb up the roof and towers as well if you are into wonderful photo opportunities. Inside the church look up the beautiful wooden panel ceiling and its paintings. Wish that people would show more respect and pace calmly and silently inside the church not letting the kids run around like little monkeys. There was also a super annoying panflute player with loudspeakers, cd-stands and all the works at the bottom of the steps. Why is he allowed to be there? He totally ruined the atmosphere.
