“Beautiful”

We visited last year and again this year just before the festival of our lady. The church was beautifully decorated with agapanthas and banana leaves. It is a most beautiful church and well worth a visit.

“Beautiful Church!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 12, 2013

Like so many of the churches in Madeira this church is beautiful inside.
Located at the top of a huge stirway in the Monte where the basket rides originate, the views are magnificent!

“beautifull”

We decided to go up to Monte to go on the toboggan and had to go and look at this amazing church. My wife wanted to light a candle for loved ones and as reviewed previously was unable to at the Cathedral. Here at the Nossa Senhora it was so easy they just ask you to make a donation of how much you want and light your candle and it's outside of the main doors this is because it is a popular church for weddings. The day we were there we found a wedding was taking place and it was so lovely Even the locals love this church especially for weddings and the view is unbelievable.

“Bit disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2013

Not a lot to see here and a bit late in August for the gardens. I expected more. Excellent views down over the bay though. The highlight has to be the toboggan trip down the street for 2 kms! It feels a bit scary and out of control, but these guys know exactly how to control and steer you to safety! Photo taken en-route and ready for you when you arrive at the end. On sale for €10 which was ok! Good idea though to arrange a taxi to pick you up at the end, otherwise you face another 2kms downhill all the way!!

“Serenity in the midday heat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2013

Having had the excitement of the cable car journey the short walk to this church is a must. Other reviewers have described this as a dull and uninteresting church and I respect their opinions but it is not the job of the church to make itself an interesting tourist destination. What made this a beautiful experience for me is the fact that the local community, with no consideration for tourists continue to worship and adorn this church as they have for centuries. The painted interiors in faded trompe loeil and the alter pieces are charming and speak to the great affection the locals have for this church. As it happens I made a special effort to visit this church as it is the current resting place of Blessed Charles, sometime Emperor of Austria & King of Hungary (disparagingly referred to elsewhere as the ArchDuke). It's not every day you get to visit the grave of someone on the road to Sainthood. If you take the cable car - make the effort - and say a prayer for Charles.
