“Fantastic value accommodation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2012

We wanted some cheap accommodation in Madeira for 7 nights. Pina Residencial cost 40 Euros a night for 2 people including breakfast. This included a bit extra for a sea view room with balcony. There is a hairdryer in the bathroom and a small portable TV in bedroom. No fridge or kettle/tea/coffee.
The accommodation is basic but fantastic value for money. We had a large double rooom with en suite. Huge balcony overlooking Funschal harbour. The room could do with updating but it was very clean and perfectly adequate.
Breakfast was continental with croissants and rolls, cheese and ham, sometimes eggs, sometimes yoghurt and fruit. All the tea or coffee you want. A good start to the day.
The staff were all very friendly and absolutely great.
There is a small plunge pool and sunbathing area which we enjoyed and was very quiet.
Attached to the hotel is a small bar used mainly by locals. Very reasonable and no noise issues. There is a computer in the bar with free internet access.
We hired a car and the hotel does have 4/5 parking spaces for guests. Getting into the car park is via a very narrow entrance and drive. The only way to do it is to reverse in. Don't hire a large car!
We thought the location of the hotel was great. Wonderful views, less than 10 minutes walk into town. It is a bit of a climb back up the hill to the hotel and if you are very unfit or have young children you may have to get a taxi or think about going elsewhere.
The only downside staying here were barking dogs late at night. This is not the fault of the hotel and will apply to almost anywhere in Funschal. It appears that many Madeirans have dogs in their yards. The dogs stay out all night and there is a regular cocophany of noise when one of them gets disturbed for some reason.
Overall, if you want a good value basic hotel I think you will be lucky to beat Pina Residencial.

Room Tip: The balcony rooms with views over the sea are probably worth the extra.

Less than 15 minutes walk downhill into the centre of town - considerably more time back to the hotel uphill (or about 5 euro in a taxi) !

There is a "snack bar" in the property which definitely gives an added buzz, and means that there is food and drink available until midnight every day - mostly reasonably priced (although big bottles of water aren't exactly cheap at 1.90 eur). On the subject of food - breakfast is a simple affair of rolls, cheese and sliced meat (or jam) with yoghurt and coffee/tea. It's fine, as long as you don't expect too much.

The same applies to other aspects too - the bedrooms range from average sized to generous (ground floor ones in the annex were bigger), and are reasonably clean with the bedding fairly comfortable (the beds themselves were good and firm). The bathrooms were fine - a little bit tired in places, but with good shower pressure.

Wifi was very patchy in the bedrooms but stronger in the bathrooms and outside - and it was free!

The staff were very pleasant, some with very good english, others less so.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view.

We stayed two nights at this guest house which is located about 5 minutes from Funchal by foot (it's a steep walk). The staff were all very friendly and the lady in charge spoke perfect English. The guest house is located up on a hill which gives you a great sea view as long as you pay the extra for one of the these rooms. The price for a nice double bed room, including a basic breakfast, was 40 euros per night which I think is a really good price.

There is a small supermarket nearby and a snack bar downstairs where you can get a small bite to eat, coffee and drinks. The rooms were really cleaned and had a homely feel to them. The bed and pillows were on the hard side, but worked fine for me.

Recommended for everyone really, but if you plan on walking then please note that it is quite steep to get up to the hotel.

I found the Residencial Pina by chance. My friends and I were going to Madeira for 4 days, and needed decent accommodation at an affordable price, and that is exactly what we got here.
Location wise, it does warn that it is up a hill, and for anyone who hasn't been to Madeira - it's is very mountainous!!! However, being young and fairly fit, this was not a problem. It was a 10 minute walk to the main area of shops and restaurants and it worked up a good appetite. Be aware though, the walk back up the hill is a fairly daunting one when you're full of food and alcohol.
The rooms were a good size, the bathrooms fairly modern and the views (if you pay the extra for a sea view) are lovely. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was continental, nothing above average but good enough to start the day on.
It is a very small hotel so bar snacks etc are limited, but if all you're after is a sandwich, it's perfect. The pool is clean and refreshing. Loungers are provided free and you don't have to have plastic cups by the pool - you can have a beer in a pint glass!!
Overall, I would definitely stay here again, and would recommend for anyone who doesn't want anything too fancy, and doesn't want to break the bank.

I actually found this hotel while I was in Porto Moniz and finding it a bit secluded there for a single traveller decided to move to Funchal for the last four nights of my trip. I read the reviews before I booked and noted that one said something about dogs barking. I didn't take much notice as there are dogs everyone. HOWEVER, had the review noted that the dogs barking happens every night, around 4 am and lasts for at least 20 minutes AND that it sounds more like the dogs are attacking each other viciously than just playfully barking I would never have reserved this hotel. There was nothing that could be done as this noise could be heard from every area of the hotel.

My other issue with this hotel was that when I emailed to book this room the lovely lady at the reception could speak perfect english and said she would be more than happy to help me plan my visit to Funchal once I arrived ... unfortunately she was not on any of the days that I stayed and of the rest of the staff no one could speak English/French/Italian or Spanish so I was left to my own devices.

All that being said it was not particularly expensive and the view was lovely. The walk uphill was definitely a work out however the downhill trip was wonderful. I wouldn't stay here again only due to the noise of the dogs which truely was horrific.

  • Liked — On my last day the few hours I was able to get translated into Portuguese the hosts were wonderful.
  • Disliked — Lack of places to eat close by, ants in bathroom, bed was very very hard

Came to the Pina for special anniversary, and it was fabulous experience. Lovely location - the view from our balcony overlooked hills of Funchal down to the ocean: absolutely stunning! Room and bathroom good - nothing fancy (no trouser presses etc) but comfortable and clean. Small and friendly bar on the ground floor did drinks and snacks - and always perfectly chilled glasses for the beer! - though we tended to take drinks up to balcony to enjoy the view! Lots of the rooms have view over sea, others over the mountain. Breakfast was crossaints and rolls, ham, cheese & fruit - and generous portions. Staff were incredibly helpful, esp. Michaela. Easy walk (20 mins) downhill into old town - walk back uphill good for keeping fit(!) but taxi only 4-5 euros. Perfectly sited really - close to town but quiet and intimate with glorious views. Very much hope to go back one day!

This hotel turned out to be an excellent choice for us wanting a relaxing short break (though there were also families staying at the same time). The location is superb, overlooking the town and bay of Funchal. When you book see if you can get a room with sea view, you'll get a balcony and an unbeatable view.

The staff are courteous and helpful.

The bar (which acts as a local bar) is pleasant with an outside seating area. You can get snacks which are basic but tasty.

The breakfasts are simple bread and cold meat affairs, but there is a lot of it, we never managed to finish all they served up.

There is a small pool great for a short dip to cool off. There is parking for about 6 cars

The hotel is close to town but uphill so if you have trouble walking you'll need to make use of taxis. We walked most of the time and I don't think we were more than 20 mins from any part of the town ( but if you want to got to the hotel district you will need a cab
