We were so glad we went to visit the Nun's Convent. It was quiet and beautiful, built in the 15th century and from where the Nuns fled to avoid plundering pirates. Well worth a visit.

Still 9 nuns is the monastary . Very inspired lady that showed us around , but it was a bit fast sometimes. Nice that it stillis there and surprised that it was so much bigger and a closed convent in the early days

It is really a pity that this visit isn't more accentuated in the travel documentation. A haven of beauty in the center

Have to walk up a steep hill to get to the convent . We walked past it and asked the taxi drivers for help . We got there at 4:30 . Had a half hour guided tour which was brilliant. A must do when visiting Funchal

Visiting this 15th Century Monastery was a MUST DO when I planned my visit to Funchal. It is a bit of an uphill trek but only about a ten minute walk from the Cathedral and is easily combined with a visit to the nearby Frederico de Freitas or the Universo de Memorias Museums.

Opening times are 9-12 and 3-5 and I was there at 3pm, along with quite a few people. The visit is guided, and our guide conversed in English, Italian and Portuguese. Although most of us were there at 3pm, a few people drifted in and joined the fifty minute long tour en route.

Our guide was excellent as she showed us around and explained the history. I found it to be a fascinating glimpse into another lifetime.

Entry is 2 euros and, if you are visiting in the afternoon, I would recommend being there at 3pm so that you are there at the beginning of the tour.
