I did go when the weather was unexpectedly bad (no one's fault), and it was ok for the price, but I have definitely been in better hostels in poorer countries which I was surprised about. Cockroaches in the room for example :/ nice people that work there, and the room was spacious enough, just...something was missing. They were relaxed about breakfast ending at 10:00am which was good. Nice walking distance to central Funchal.

I walked into Phil's Haven Hostel and immediately felt at home. The staff were very friendly and helpful (the room was cold because we opened the window at night--I asked for a second blanket, which I got immediately), the location was gorgeous and convenient (as long as you aren't a snob about the bus), and I would definitely return here. The wifi was strong throughout the building (multiple routers) and I worked outside on the veranda many days. A neighborhood cat always came over to snuggle, which was quite pleasant. I highly recommend staying here for a taste of the hippie hostel life.

Phil's Haven was clean, comfortable, affordable with an awesome & helpful staff. It is actually a former private house with a kitchen & finished basement with TV & PCs, making it cozy & home-like. The backyard, with its friendly local cats, overlooks the ocean & is also a good place to laze out & sunbathe. It's just a 15 minute walk down the hill to the center, but the bus also stops right next door. Victoria, Fili, Mariana & Edgard (the brains & backbone of the whole operation) were very helpful & accommodating. Much recommended! Obrigado & God bless!

Room tip: Private rooms away from the common kitchen are the quiestest.

There is some kind of magic in this hostel that makes it more of a home than a holiday, something you couldn't find in the most expensive hotel
What sets this place apart is the welcome, not just from the owner and his excellent staff but here the guests all come together in an amazingly friendly way. Every time I have stayed here I have met people from all over the planet and some how I always find a group of like minded people that are happy to share experiences and adventures.
The service and quality of this hostel is as good as you can expect. A beautiful detatched property in a quiet area with wide ocean view and views back to the mountains.

Room tip: All rooms are clean and well presented, doubles, twins and dorm beds are excellent

If you're a budget traveler this place is perfect for you. The dorms are quite big with enough personal space. They provide light breakfast every morning, (toast, cereals, fresh fruits, juices) which gives you a good start of the day. Bathrooms/ toilets are enough for everyone, you always going to find a free one. The hostel is on the of a hill, so there's an amazing view to the ocean. I had a great time there and I would definitely go back again.
