After leaving tropical Funchal, you find yourself in a very different setting with views over the island that are worth seeing. Be careful because it might be cold compared to Funchal's temperature.

Obviously hadn't done my research! We hired a car, grabbed a map and drove all round the Island in a day, crossing the Island at different points twice. Coming up here was a whim based on noticing it was a high point and not far off the road we were on. What a fantastic surprise! Was brilliant to be up in the clouds and have such fantastic views and even a cafe and shop. Not to be missed! Don't be put off by the comments about driving in Madeira - if you're an experienced driver and able to steer round corners you'll be fine. We were expecting bad and scary roads but found them to be fine. Yes a little narrow here and there, yes a little step here and there but hey, drive to he conditions - the Madeirans do!

the walk to pico ruivo then return to pico Arieiro is hard, about 13km.
Start early and have good shoes.

We weren't expecting the views to be as fantastic as they were. It's cold up there so take a jacket.

One of the places that I got in love with in Madeira... breathtaking views on the top and during the journey to it, easy to find and reach, good place to have a walk around. There is few tourists shop and a café, so you could have some calm rest on the top.
