“Nicest meal in funchal”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

We stayed in the melia Madeira mare hotel which is situated on the promenade overlooking the sea in Funchal. The Scat restaurant is located in front of the hotel approximately 50 metres away partially overlooking the promenade. My husband and I went for dinner last night in the restaurant and it was the best meal we have had in Madeira. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was superb in fact we are going to go back tonight. Sorry we hadn't discovered it at. The beginning of our holiday. Ricardo the manager was very professional and made us feel very welcome.

“Great 1st time, sadly 2nd time a let down”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

This is a hard one to put in to words, we booked for both evenings, 1st night we shared a lovely starter followed by leg of rabbit for myself and a perfectly cooked cod loin for my partner. A bottle of wine and a dessert shared came to a reasonable price and the service was OK, a little slow on order taking yet a pleasant waiter made up for this.

2nd night though, wow, it was different. We were seated outside again (lovely warm night) yet it took a while longer then the previous time for our order to be taken, even for the drinks (20minutes from arriving we finally got drinks). We decided to not order a starter as the breads and assorted pate's had looked worth the charge last time so we ordered our mains and waited... And waited.... Just coming up to an hour from ordering our food the waiter came over to say there had been a problem in the kitchen yet it should not be much longer for our food, 10-15minutes. OK I can accept situations happen so we waited, 20minutes and we got served the breads and pate's, then just over another 10minutes we got our mains.
I'd like to say they were fantastic and worth the wait, the tuna steak for my partner which was beautifully thick was over cooked all the way through, dry and chewy, although my scabbard was nicely cooked and tasted great. We had to send the tuna steak back and declined an alternative as she had gone past the point of being hungry by then.
The waiter could not have been more apologetic for items that were not his doing, he kindly removed the tuna steak and the bread/pate's from our bill and did explain the situation they had (the kitchen shares duties with the restaurant next door, one kitchen, two lots of customers?).
The one additional piece of advice is that if you are sat outside there are no lights to aid eating when the sun goes down, bit hard to see the bones in the fish when it's dark (and yes, I know fish will have bones yet my preference is removing them before consumption).

All in all, a mixed bag of feelings for this place, I'm sure when I go back to Madeira I will give them a further chance and hope that the night resembles the 1st time and that what happened 2nd time round was just a one off.

“Avoid if you want good service and good food.”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

Maybe we just went on a very bad night during the peak season, but we have been to Madeira many times and eaten in a variety of different restaurants but this has been by far the worst.

They were very accommodating to get you into the restaurant but that's when it all went wrong. It took well over an hour to receive our food and 3 out of the 4 meals we ordered were cold, dried out and practically inedible. They were all traditional Madeira meat dishes so shouldn't have been too difficult to get right. Unfortunately it was too late to go anywhere else so we asked for a deduction on the price which they reluctantly agreed to...however we had to wait a further half hour to pay!!

Only upside was that the wine was very good according to my father!

We will not be visiting there again, there are plenty other choices around.

“Two Restaurants in One”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

With a position right on the promenade this is a pleasant spot to eat - although the sea view is somewhat spoiled by a children's play area and basketball court.

You get two menus. One of a Portuguese cuisine and the other with a Moroccan style with tagines etc. Both restaurants share one kitchen.

The food was fine, but the service was slow to the point of being off putting and even getting the bill seemed too much trouble - we had to ask three times.

A shared starter and two mains plus a couple of glasses of wine and a beer came to 50 euros - not bad, but we didn't bother with coffee or dessert as we had been more than two hours getting that far.
