Description: Located on one of the oldest streets of Funchal, the Taberna Ruel Restaurant aim to be a mark in the historic center of Funchal. This location grants a special atmosphere so you can enjoy an unforgettable experience. Working with local ingredients of high quality, passion for what we do and innovative cooking techniques are what distinguishes us. The wine cellar with a wide selection of Portuguese wines are carefully framed in a secular cistern. The restaurant by its unique location in the heart of the Funchal historical center, was initially launched as Taberna da Esquina, today the restaurant is Taberna Ruel a natural evolution by the recognition of our guests to Richard Ruel great passion in the use of products from Madeira and its constant search for new flavors. The renovation of the building was awarded with the prize for "Heritage Recovery of Funchal City Historical Center - 2011" by the Municipality of Funchal.

The restaurant might seem similar to other touristic places in the old town, however our experience here was completely different from the other restaurants. Service was excellent and very friendly, today's fish catch was well prepared and the garden terrace was peaceful and nice. We asked for some extra spicy sauce with the fish and also to change the side dishes, everything was okay and there was no additional expense.

We enjoyed this restaurant very much. Their fish is excellent, the service very relaxed but efficient and it is situated in the nicest part of the old town. Their deep fried ice cream was such a hit with my son that we were compelled to return (though on the 2nd visit it was a bit soggy rather than crisp). It is a little more than other restaurants, but on balance their food just justifies the extra.

Funchal's Old Town is a peaceful area to visit, and although it can be busy at times the back streets are colourful (especially the painted doors) and full of interesting shops and restaurants. We have visited Madeira five or six times over the last few years and only discovered the Taberna da Esquinqa on our most recent trip (June 2013) but will definitely go back there each time we return to Madeira. On our first visit I had the best fillet steak I've ever had, cooked rare and SO tender it was like cutting fudge, and my wife enjoyed the espada (scabbard fish). We decided to sit in the cobbled street (no traffic allowed here) to watch folk pass by, although we could have chosen the spacious back garden. The waiters had a lovely British style sense of humour and were very entertaining and friendly without being overbearing or patronising.
Our second visit was just as good, so this was not a 'one off' visit on a good day. I had charuteiro (it's a cross between tuna and swordfish) from the beautifully presented platter of catches of the day. I'd never heard of such a fish but the waiter assured me it was a good choice (don't they always?) and he was right. My wife enjoyed another espada - once again perfectly cooked.
We have been to several restaurants in the Old Town but this one is by far the best. Not cheap but really good value and excellent quality.

Chose this restaurant in the "old town" from the endless options in this area and I don't think I will want to try out others when I go back, it was simply divine! Excellent service and food, the ambiance is fantastic! Definitely worth the price, highly recommend!

That was a pleasure to eat in this restaurant! The service was really nice, the food was awsome! we ordered some fish and it was really nice and (what is really rare in Funchal) it was FLAVORED! i appreciate also the addidion of italian cuisine - this dishes are also delicious. The prices are a little bit too expensive, but the quality of food recompense it.
