It sits up high on the western edge of town and is readily visible from the water. It is a 25 minute walk from the city center. It is steep but not a problem for anybody reasonably fit. The gardens around the fortress are worth visiting.
There is a small museum inside the fortress. The things of interest are the fortress itself and the panoramic views of Funchal and the harbor.
