The company need to retrain their staff. They made a mix up with our booking and left us at the hotel waiting for nearly two hours, eventually sent a taxi. We joined the main party but there was no apology. The guide never introduced himself, he seemed fed up all day. He just kept telling everyone what to do or not do all day. We had heard that the guides were fun and made sure everyone had a pleasant experience, not this guide. At the end of the day I approached him to see what he had to say about the earlier mix up and he tried to deny it even happened!! I pressed him further and he just said it was down to our tour company, he didn’t apologise. The walk is great, the 25 Fontes are ok, the scenery is amazing, but a good walk also involves the people you are with and sadly this tour guide doesn’t understand this.

We joined the half-day Paradise Valley (Serra do Faial) walk - it was about 5.5km and flat. We were collected on time at our hotel and were immediately impressed by the careful driving of the minibus. On arrival at the start point our guide showed her brilliance. She was fluent in both English and German and very knowledgable about the local flora, history and culture of the area.
The views were brilliant and being 700m above Funchal we were in a different world. It was particularly interesting to see the small properties hugging the hillsides and the plots on which locals grow potatoes, cabbages, onions and more.
This particular walk included a short stop in a village where we could get some refreshments and use a toilet - I understand that this is not the case on most other walks.
The walking was very easy and sadly it was over all too quickly - so we have booked for another one!

The fast-paced walk along the levada Serra do Faial was a treat from start to finish 5.5km long in 2.5 hours. Our guide was a young lady who knew her subject, botany and agriculture. We walked past tiny houses occupied by the "other half" of Madeira, each with small gardens filled with vegetables and flowers. The scenery is breath-taking, with views over the valley. You are far from over-built Funchal, 700 meters high in a world that could not be more different from the center of tourism on the island.

We selected the Serra D'Agua Valley half day walk as it was one that we had not done before. We were picked up at our hotel and driven to the start of the walk about 30 minutes away. The walk was very pleasant and quite easy passing through impressive scenery particularly in the second half. We walked for just over two hours and ended at a nice café. The guide was very informative and friendly. I would recommend Madeira Explorers.

This tour was brilliant from start to finish. We were picked up on time from our hotel and right from the start our guide, Susanna, kept the mulitnational group laughing in several different languages. It's a proper stomp down the mountain which would not be suitable for the hard of walking, and there's a long dark tunnel at the end which was a bit soggy in trainers, but the whole thing felt like a fantastic adventure. I was exhausted the next day though!
