Quinta Jardins do Lago
Ranked #1 of 88 Hotels in Funchal
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 14, 2013

We had a fabulous holiday in Madeira during the first week of August 2013. It was made all the better by staying at the Quinta Jardins do Lago. The hotel is set in the most beautiful gardens with lovely comfortable and clean accommodation. We stayed in one of the ground floor standard garden view rooms and would not hesitate to recommend as it was perfect for us. We stayed half board and although there is only a very limited choice of food from the menu (two items for each course) we enjoyed every meal that we had there. Breakfast was a feast and lovely to sit on the veranda in the morning sun. Although the hotel offers a courtesy bus into Funchal, we did not use it as we chose to walk daily into the town, down a steep hill and then use a taxi back at a cost of about 6 Euros (although once walked back but it is a very hot walk back up the hill.) I'm not sure if I would recommend this hotel to families with children as the hotel seems very geared to adults which suited me as I was travelling with my husband and wanted a relaxing break. Our only disappointment was that there is nowhere outside (in the hotel grounds) to have a pre-dinner drink in the evenings, but despite that small point we would definitely return.

Room Tip: We stayed in a ground floor standard room which was lovely, large and had a nice veranda overlooking...

Tripadvisor places Jardins at number 1 in Funchal and it was on this basis that we chose Jardins as our holiday hotel. Overall we were not disappointed. The hotel is an oasis of peace and tranquility thanks in part to the gardens, Colombo the tortoise , the koi carp and the swans. We would like to congratulate the staff - anyone can employ a member of staff to do a job, but the staff here share a pride in their hotel and this makes the stay a personal experience and gives the hotel character. The cleanliness of the hotel was exemplary. We stayed in a premier suite (211): the room was more than ample with a separate living area to the bedroom that was equal in size and beautifully furnished. The air conditioning was silently efficient. The pool area was very good with staff always being available - on occasion the drinks were served before we even returned to our loungers! By the way, we found the best place to get wi-fi was by the pool. In all honesty though a reality check is due - this is a 5 star hotel where our bathroom had a very small separate shower with a shower curtain(!) and a hair dryer which would have been more fitting for the 1990's! On the same note, the hotel's description of their 'well equipped gym' is some way off, in fact it is anything but - shame I packed my gym kit! Seriously the gym needs an upgrade.

This hotel is a must to go and stay, the gardens and pool are superb . We stayed here for 2 weeks at the end of July for my partners 50th birthday and we weren't disappointed . From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we had the most relaxing holiday imaginable. All the comments on facebook are correct and really it is very difficult to put into words. The hotel provided a cake and champagne for his birthday which was a special touch. The staff were very friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble, must mention Ana who really was superb, thanks for a memorable 2 weeks and we will be returning

Room Tip: all the rooms are great, we stayed in a superior with superb views all round

The Quita Jardins do Largo nestles in a nondescript suburb of Funchal. It's a great place to stay if you're visiting Madiera. The rooms are spacious, the gardens spectacular and the pool is simply stunning. Breakfast is hearty and the evening menu is diverse. It's a quiet and fairly refined place and the staff go about their business with in a reserved and unobtrusive manner. The rooms are refreshed to a very high standard each day.

To visit the main areas of Funchal it's a steep - but easy - walk down to the city centre that offers views across the old town. The walk back is more arduous and probably not worth the €6 you'll save on the taxi fare. The hotel runs its own shuttle to the harbour but it does run infrequently and having to book it well in advance means that you will lose flexibility.

The hotel's unique feature and star turn is Columbo - a 55 year old Giant Tortoise - that lives in the gardens. She emerges each morning to bask in the sun and convince guests that feeding her fruit is a good idea.

Hotel and rooms were big and spacious. Well presented and cleaned every day. Staff very friendly and willing to help. We stayed BB and the breakfasts were fabulous. Very quiet and relaxing. There is courtesy bus to Funchal provided by hotel and if walking be aware very steep decline into Funchal and incline back to hotel. It took us 30 mins (each way) to walk every day and it was lovely to see the views. Only complaint we have were the clouds we had everyday. Will defo return again.

Room Tip: Room we had was a corner room, large room very small veranda.
