“A truly wonderful hotel”
Reviewed April 29, 2013

A truly wonderful Hotel in marvellous grounds. And so quiet.
We felt Madeira’s attractions were limited and Funchal is certainly suffering from the new work on the harbour front, essential to prevent a repeat of the 2010 flooding, but it will be fine when it’s done, in about 16 months time we were told. We hadn’t realised that there are very few beaches in Madeira - mainly mountainous scenery.
Although the hotel is a pretty nasty walk from the centre of Funchal, not just because of the slope but the lack of pavement in places and some terrible driving. But this shouldn’t prevent you going into Funchal for some good restaurants, the wonderful cable car and a wander through the Old Town. You just have to factor in 11 or 12 euros for 2 taxi trips, (can be less than 5 each trip but more in the evenings and weekends) unless you’re lucky enough/well organised enough to catch the Hotel minibus. However this Hotel’s location is still so much nicer than the alternative hotel locations on the seafront where the high rise hotels and apartments dominate the landscape, and are still a significant walk from Funchal.
We were lucky with the weather, good sunshine and temperatures in the high twenties, although not always like this.
But we will come back again, to this hotel, despite our slightly negative comments on Madeira itself. And we'll work our way through the library of well over 500 English language books. Plus a table tennis table. Plus a pool table. Plus games and jig-saw puzzles.
Staff were unfailingly helpful and courteous and on a couple of occasions went the extra mile when they had to.
Oh and don't miss a 4X4 ride with UpMountain Madeira. You'll miss the heavy tourist spots and have a wonderful day out.

Room Tip: All "standard" i.e. "Superior" rooms have a view over the garden. We enjoyed the...

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Madeira and thought this hotel was fantastic,we were very lucky with the weather 30 degrees for over 50% of the week.

The Quinta is set in a residential district above Funchal with no other hotels nearby,it is a very traditional and elegant hotel beautifully furnished and very comfortable. We had booked a superior room but were upgraded to a premier suite which was 80 square metres in size but even the standard rooms are large at 40 square metres. The suite was very well equiped and I think our only criticism would be that the hairdryer seemed old and was not very effective otherwise we had everything we needed including a good range of toiletries and tea and coffee making facilities.

The hotel is a very long and steep walk from the old town of Funchal where there are numerous restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets but taxis only cost about six Euros and the hotel runs a courtesy bus several times a day but not in the evening. It would take someone who was young and fit a lot longer than 15 minutes to walk to restaurants,I would say nearer 30 minutes.

The breakfast was very good with a wonderful variety of fresh fruit and something to suit everyone plus eggs cooked to order and when I asked for soft poached eggs that's exactly what I received. Breakfast could be taken in the lovely Pink Room on the terrace or outside.Service was excellent.

We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant but a lot of other guests did and said the food was very good although one couple said that the table d'hote was five courses but with no choice and they thought that that was not acceptable at a five star hotel. The best restaurant we visited was the Restaurant du Fort, couldn't fault it and excellent value for money.

The gardens are beautiful and pretty well kept and the pool complex is exceptional,we loved the pool and did not have any trouble getting sunbeds, plenty of towels are available. The pool bar serves drinks and food but I think that food is only served beteen 12md and 3pm and although it is very nice it is expensive. There is however a friendly cafe bar on a corner very close to the hotel and we had drinks and toasted sandwiches a couple of times and bought water etc

The service from all staff was exceptional, all of them were helpful and friendly. The Wi Fi connection was not good so a few times we used the computer in the library.

To sum up we would recommend this hotel for couples but not for families with children,if you want a quiet, peaceful holiday where most of the other quests are middle aged or older people then you will enjoy this hotel.

Loved our four-day stay here in a beautiful suite (#306) overlooking the gardens and the distant sea. It is a superb hotel on the hills overlooking Funchal, with it's own spectacular botanic garden - thankfully away from hustle of the towering seaside hotel blocks - very civilised.

Just to be sure don't believe that Funchal centre and the harbour area is "within easy walking distance" as some of the reviews have said. It is a seriously long walk, and coming home uphill is not recommended for the over 40s!

The hotel really is a haven but has has some very quaint old-fashioned ideas! For example they advertise 'Free WiFi' and it certainly is free but hardly ever had a strong enough signal to use on the third floor. I needed to stay in touch on this holiday and found it almost never worked in the room. If you need wifi get a room near reception or work at the pool! The strange thing is that management didn't see this a problem. They blamed "the quality of the Internet in Madeira" when it was really just the quality of the hotel server.

We found the restaurant menu overly fussy (pretentious?) and gave that a miss. The pool bar had an excellent small menu and superb food! There is room service, but strangely, no room service menu is offered. You need to have a long conversation to discover what is on the menu at the moment. It could all be so much simpler...

Room Tip: I would not recommend the rooms that overlook the old buildings containing the restaurant. Corner su...

We chose this hotel after reading the the reviews on trip advisor. We wanted a peaceful place and were not disappointed. Beautiful grounds. The poolside lunches are very good.
Only one restaurant was open in the evening and the food was too heavy. No light items.
The buffet breakfast was good especially the pastries. Limited choice for eggs but it was fine with us.
The attitude of the service staff was mixed. Some were very pleasant but some did not make you feel welcome.
We never took a taxi to to the center of the city. The uphill hike back to the hotel was a good exercise.

Room Tip: Even if the ocean view is limited it is better to have a second floor room. More privacy when you a...

Faultless. What a lovely spot away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist attractions but only a 15 minute stroll to the centre of Funchal. We had a fabulous time. Great room, fantastic food ( stayed on a half board basis), charming staff and really well maintained and lush gardens. All in all a class act and we will definitely be going back.

What a wonderful find - a real sanctuary set in the hills above Funchal, but within walking distance of the harbour and centre. Extensive and well-maintained tropical gardens give the illusion of being well away from from the high rise building boom that is Funchal.

Above all, it was not the setting, the accommodation, or the excellent food, but the staff, especially in the breakfast and dining rooms where you were greeted with a genuine warmth and hospitality that is uncharacteristic of other five star hotels.

Forget the slow internet access, the steep climb from the town center and immerse yourself in the calm offered by this peaceful sanctuary

Room Tip: As all rooms are south facing, go for the superior grade as these are slightly larger and occupy the...

We just stayed at the Quinta Jardins in room 216. The room was excellent and the hotel and gardens were first class. The hotel is in a quiet area of the town, a good yomp up the hill from downtown funchal.

Staying here you are out of the main areas for sure but that is reflected in the quiet peaceful gardens with a great pool area.

It took a good 20 minutes to walk to town down a hill and a walking back up got the pulse going! However a taxi was cheap and quick if you didn't want to walk. We didnt use the hotel restaurant for evening meals as we ate out in town every night, however Its not cheap to eat in the hotel. However it is a a 5 star quality hotel so this is to be expected.
The staff and hotel were excellent.
