“Lovely Hotel in a great location”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

We very much enjoyed our week at the Quinta Bela Sao Tiago. The location is perfect in the old town with stunning views over the roof tops to the sea. The character of the hotel and surrounding area is charming, much better than the modern area where most of the hotels are located. The holiday didn't start too well our allocated room (218) overlooked the busy road at the front of the hotel and besides the noise of the traffic and barking dogs, there is a garage almost next door. We had booked a garden veiw room, though no one seemed to believe us. Luckily for us we had our booking form and an email confirming the type of room with us. However it took from 11.30 til 4 in the afternoon to get it sorted. Half a day of our holiday wasted while Thomas Cook attempted to sort it out. As we suspected it was Cook's fault; but by now there were no garden view rooms left! Any way it all turned out well in the end. After spending the first night in the noisy room we were up graded to to a sea view room (219). To be honest if you don't mind noise, room 218 is a lovely room, huge in fact about three times bigger than the the one with the sea view!
The pool area is very nice, as are the gardens, complete with banana plantation showing the hotel's origin. The staff at the hotel are very good, as are most of the Madeiran people and we really enjoyed it there. The breakfast is plentiful and eating it outside on the terrace was a lovely way to start the day.
There are lots of good places to eat close by and we discoverd after attending the welcome meeting at the nearby Hotel Porto Santa Maria that they do fantastic cocktails and between six and seven they are half price! Needless to say we 'forced' our selves to go back there every evening!
Madeira has so much to do and see, to many things to mention here.
We thoroughly enjoyed this holiday and will deffinately go back to Madeira and the Quinta Bela Sao Tiago.

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Bela Sao Tiago. OK, the weather wasn't great the week we were there, but there were plenty of things to do other than lying in the sun. Thanks to this hotel's situation in the old town, one of our main daily decisions was where to eat our evening meal. There are dozens of good and reasonably priced restaurants within a few hundred yards. We were glad we followed the advice of several of the reviews here and opted for bed and breakfast rather than half-board.
Our room was comfortable and spacious. We would recommend going for a garden view or sea view - you pay a little more, but otherwise you might end up overlooking the rua Bela Sao Tiago, a featureless thoroughfare.
The staff were friendly and helpful. When I checked out, I left a plug converter and ipad charger in the room (the free wifi works well). When we went back to collect our luggage, it was waiting for me at reception.
The clientele is almost exclusively middle-aged middle-class European (like most visitors to Madeira), so this is probably not the hotel for those with children or teenagers hoping for a disco and lively entertainment. Suited us fine....
Excellent views from the terrace; just the place to sip a pre-dinner cocktail. Yes, there are sea-front works going on, but they do not overwhelm here, unlike, we imagine, the sea-level hotel immediately facing them.
The only reason for not giving 5 stars is that nowhere is perfect, but I won't bother to repeat here the modest shortcomings recorded by others. We would go back.

Room Tip: Pay more for a room witrh a garden or sea view.

Quinta Bela Sao Tiago is a wonderful hotel in a brilliant location for exploring the old town. Madeira is a beautiful island and full of stunning scenery and great gardens.
This hotel has a few room types. Don't book a room without a garden view as some of the cheaper rooms don't have a good view. The pool at this time of the year is not heated so you can't really use the pool (May). Lovely gardens and excellent staff.
Give the restaurant a miss even the a la carte menu is inedible, fortunately there are plenty of restuarants close by. You must have espetada (meat on a stick) delicious. A Daisy cocktail is also a must and contains Port ( local speciality drink)
Funchal is undergoing renovation, they are putting in another berth for cruise ships so the front is a bit unsightly but the rest of the island makds up for it. It's a must. Please like my review if you found it helpful. Thanks

Room Tip: Go for a garden view room, the views are lovely. The lead in room may not have a good view.

On arrival we were impressed with the overall look of the hotel. We choose to upgrade our room prior to arrival as this was a celebration birthday treat. The room (123) was described as a Junior Suite, I don't know how they can classify that title, when it was a slightly larger then the regular rooms. We should have been alerted when we found it to be on reception floor, but the views impressed us. From the first to the last night (14 of them) we were woken by reception noise, staff talking, irritating dragging chairs and constant telephone ringing. Once we finally got to sleep, were woken at 5.30am to 6am by breakfast staff, oh yes we were above the kitchen!
We tried on numerous occasions to change our room to be told they did not have any free.
The evening meals started with waiter's service as expected, after 2 nights we were told it is now buffet service.
The meals were so bland and uninviting we choose to eat out where we experienced some wonderful options with beautiful food and service, not knocking the hotel's service that was excellent. We tired very quickly with the food, the previous meats were used the following night mixed with rice or pasta, hah can't fool me!
The beds were the most uncomfortable we have ever (tried) to sleep in.
It is such a shame as the style and position of the hotel is fantastic.

Room Tip: Don't upgrade, as most rooms have sea view

We stayed here last week for a week's holiday and really enjoyed it. The hotel is fabulous, up on the hill close to the old town with stunning views across the bay. Wonderful black and white chequed terraces, comfy chairs, well positioned swimming pool with comfortable loungers. The reception staff are really welcoming (we even had a welcome drink on arrival - madeira wine!) and very helpful, we were helped to choose a great tour (West tour of the Island - well recommended as we only had time to fit in one trip in the end), and they also booked us tea at Reids (recommend this too!). The rooms are good, only two complaints, you are given a stupid elecrontic box to use for the lighting in the room, not great when you need the bathroom quickly and the beds are not that comfortable especially with a woolly blanket in summer and they could use bed sheets that fit. We did have a lovely balcony though with a wonderful view! We didn't have dinner at the hotel as there are so many great restaurants to choose from in the old town (don't bother walking into the new part of town at night). Breakfast is great at the hotel in the morning with plenty of choice and the chance to sit outside on the terrace, perfect (apart from the pesky pigeons). We had a wonderful time in Funchal, and we would definitely recommend and go back to the Hotel Quinta Bela Sao Tiago!

A week at this hotel was sunshine itself. Situated in the Old Town area this hotel is perfectly placed for the local restaurants and cafes. Delightful staff, attentive but not overbearing: ready to help when asked and their guidance was spot-on. Breakfast was a buffet style and very relaxed too. No rush, no fuss just good food. The room was comfortable with adequate space for the luggage we had taken with us. Just be aware of the rugs, they don't half shift when you stand on them! Once caught, twice shy... A proper bath too! What a delight after a hard day in the hills walking the pathways. The weather for the week was overcast with rain on a couple of days, that said we were out every day. The evening short walk down to one of the many good quality restaurants meant a good nights sleep was guaranteed.

Madeira is a rock in the Atlantic; everywhere on the island seems to be uphill via very twisty roads. That said, there are some stunning views that just would not be there if the island was flat! Funchal is undergoing major civil engineering work along the fore shore. This involves the immediate transportation system. Some of the work is to create new "beach" areas, others are to rebuild the flood damaged parts of the town infrastructure. The noise from these works can be heard on the terrace to the hotel but is background rather than in your face. There are hotels within yards (meters) of the construction work - I have pity the occupants.

We had checked out recent reviews before booking: generally the small niggles are still there, 1.50 euro for the use of the room safe and the room lighting system. These though did not detract from the overall excellent stay.

We would definitely book again, finding a good deal to recommend this hotel.

Second time here after 5 years and once again delighted with the place. There are a few little niggles none of which would spoil your stay and balancing the "ups" against the minor "downs", it's a winner. Let's get the little minus points out of the way:
1. If you can't manage hills, this place is perhaps not for you.
2. The remote control lighting system in the rooms is a real 'faff'. Confusing and with no advantage that I see over normal switches.
3. Would like breakfast tea/coffee & toast delivered to the table instead of parading up and down collecting breakfast in instalments.
4. 1.50 euros per day for the safe is a bit of a cheek for a hotel of this type.
5. Bedside rugs are a little slippery on the wooden floors. Surfed a few feet a couple of times!
6. Updated flat screen TVs wouldn't go amiss.
So; on to the "why stay here" items:-
1. The views of the harbour and town are fantastic. The harbour, cruise ships coming and going, the town and the hills beyond. Drinks on the terrace or a quiet sit on your balcony - it's all there in front of you.
2. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Beautifully mannered and courteous without being 'over the top' and obviously looking to boost any possible tips coming their way.
3. It's one of the few hotels near to the old town with it's restaurants and bars whilst retaining a quiet atmoshere. No need for taxis to get into town, it's a stroll. Although coming back is uphill. There's a big hotel just down the hill but beware! Long term sea defence work is right on their doorstep and VERY noisy, starting at 07.30am.
4. Pool area and grounds excellent.
5. Barring tea/coffee issue, breakfast is very good. Fresh and hot. Cannot agree with some of the other reviews that marked it down.
So, that's it. Well worth staying here. My only slight concern would be that the next few years will see the place needing a pretty comprehensive refurbishment.
