“My Favourite Hotel in all the world!”

What a lovely hotel! spacious room, spotlessly clean and in a quiet location with beautiful views from both back and front facing rooms. With buffet style meals each evening - there is something to suit everyone. I'd recommend the fish. There is alternative dining on selected nights but we didnt try them - perhaps next time. A free bus into town is provided and very handy. Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Can't wait to go again!

From the moment we walked into our room we knew we would like this hotel. The staff were always helpful and courteous at all times. The location was further out from the centre of Funchal than we imagined but there was a courtesy bus which we used on a number of occasions. We like walking so enjoyed walking from the Hotel along the promenade to the centre of Funchal stopping for a lunch and a coffee at a restaurant on our way. Breakfast was served on the terrace which we enjoyed. We could have breakfast until 10.30 which was good as we don't like an early breakfast on holiday. A buffet dinner was served in the evenings and every evening they had a different theme. The only fault (if you can call it a fault) was that the evening entertainment was not that good. Someone playing on the piano most nights is a bit boring, we like to dance so something a bit more lively would be fine.

We are happy to know that you enjoyed the hotel facilities and the sorroundings, our aim is to correspond to our guests expectations at all times.
Our evening entertainment is due to lti standards, which apply to quiet evenings, however in summer season, we have different groups and traditional dancing from the island in and outside, around the pool area.
We hope you had a safe flight back home and we hope to see you again.

I had never been to Madeira before and now I have discovered it, I will happily come back every year. It is the perfect escape from cold British February- a beautiful, quiet and relaxing island to stay on. We feasted on fish all week. The holiday was very good value, costing £398 for flight and 5* hotel for the week.

The hotel was lovely with great views over the sea. You can see both the sunrise and the sunset from different spots on the grounds. It is a fair distance from Funchal (25 mins walk) but the hotel runs a free regular shuttle bus. I preferred being slightly away fromt he centre because it was peaceful. There is a nicely landscaped 'promenade' that runs below the hotel, along the sea, all the way into town. The spa was great and both pools fab. The outside one was a bit chilly but it was February so never mind!

The hotel is around the corner from the best fish restaurant on the island- O Boch... somethign or rather. We also enjoyed a restraun recommended to us by Reception that was located in a nerby fishing village- they pick you up in a minibus. It was called Viallage of Fish (in Portugese!). Also, the Il Forto restaurant in town was very good too.

Delivers what a five-star hotel should, and of course (as I've written before) the location is great for our purposes - quieter, out of the city centre; large, clean rooms and specific requests met; professional yet friendly staff. Our favourite breakfast buffet anywhere - surely no-one could fail to be satisified. (OK, well if you want kippers you might be, but they do offer porridge.) BBC One and ITV One are now available in the rooms so you can keep up with the news or even 'Eastenders' or 'Coronation Street' if you're sad enough.
They have though entered into a 3 year partnership with lti (at this hotel only they tell me) and my first impression it that this is not a good thing. lti seem to have brought a more aggressive attitude to bear in little ways, such as these three examples.
1) Tea/coffee facilities in the room...having got it right last year (free restocks) there is now a 2.5 Euro restocking charge. This really p****s me off. If you're paying 5 star prices, I believe you have every right to expect tea/coffee making facilities without any extra charge.
2) A dress code (no shorts, t-shirts or flip-flops) for the restaurants in the evening written in CAPITALS for emphasis in the info pack. Personally I couldn't care less as we don't eat in the hotel restaurants in the evening, but I resent the tone of this. It's the golf club level of petty snobbery - as if certain clothing confers respectability upon a person.
3) A stark warning not to take food from the breakfast buffet for consumption later. I understand their point and have no objection to it, but it is the way it is prominently displayed on a lectern at the start of the buffet that leaves a bad taste in the mouth (pun intended). There must be a subtler way to deal with this.
All this said though, these are little points, overall we love it and shall return next year.

Thank you for visiting us again and thank you for your opinion in which, for you a 5* star hotel should be.
First of all, i hope you have had a wonderfull time with us!
After reading carefully your comments which, in your opinion were not changed for better, i can understand them and in this way i will present it at the manager's office.
We do not charge for the replacement of the tea and coffee facilities but for the service, which is €2.50 for all the tea bags, coffee etc, even so i understand your point of view, being the lti Pestana Grand a 5* Hotel.
The dress code is more restricted now but as always, it's a matter of good sense, depending of the situation.
Regarding the information in capital letters, warning not to take food from the breakfast, i will check on it personally and, i agree with you, that it shoul be a little more subtil.
Once again thank you for helping us improve our service. Our aim is to do as much as we can, and in this way satisfying our guests wishes and needs.

We returned from Madeira yesterday. Taking a short break of 4 nights.
We really enjoyed our stay . The weather was not perfect , but thehotel was wonderful.
We had an Ocean view room and it was well worth the small supplement. As already mentioned in other reviews the rooms are very large with a lovely balcony. They are spotless, you really could not fault them in any way.
We were on Bed and Breakfast and thought the Breakfast was very good although the hot breakfast could have been a bit warmer. We ate the Buffet Dinner in the hotel on one evening, again it was not hot but there was plenty of choice.
There are lots of Restaurants and Bars in the area if you fancy a change.
The hotel is a little way from Funchal although the Hotel does provide an excellent free bus service. We purchased tickets on the Yellow open top bus tour. It was really good value and you could use the tickets for 2 days on either of the two tours they offered, Hope on and off when you want. It also included local buses on the first day. The bus stops about 3 minutes walk from the Hotel.
We must say a very special thank you to all the staff. Nothing was ever to much trouble and they are a credit to the Pestana Hotel Group. A special thank you to Miguel in Guest Relations for helping to make our Birthdays so special. The wine and flowers were a lovely surprise and we also appreciate you allocating the room that we requested,
We will certainly be returning again soon.

Rci exchange and our third visit to Madeira and always within the Pestana group.We found that the standard of cleaning at the Grand was very good and toiletries were replenished daily and that our studio apartment had everything that we needed. Maintance was good as the toaster blew up one morning and blew the electrics in our apartment and they quickly came and sorted it out for us, Housekeping also replaced the toaster within 10 mins.
It was my husbands birthday while we were there and he was duely presented with a bottle of champange on the day. We found out that they did this to another guest as well who was on a package deal,so everyone seems to be treated the same.
Food and drinks in the hotel did seem to be a bit steep in price and we did eat out quite a bit. We wwent to The Fort resteraunt tin the old town for his birthday at the owner relations team and what a meal!!! They do a 35euro voucher per person and this includes wine and champagne on arrival. We both had steak and was one of the best we have had for a long time.

Our first visit to Madeira having had our Egyptian Nile Cruise cancel at last minute. What a fantastic Island Madeira is, we wish we had visited before and will certainly return. The Pestana Grand is exactly that - Grand and luxurious. We spent a relaxing 7 days being totally spoilt. The food was delicious and totally spoilt for choice. The room we had was enormous and had a wonderful balcony overlooking the pools and sea. Staff were very friendly and can never do enough for you right from the front of house staff through to the bar and waiting and also cleaning staff. The complimentary champagne in our room for my birthday was the icing on the cake, totally unexpected and most welcome. On Friday we had the opportunity to visit the Pestana Casino for a meal and show as part of our half board basis - a very good night and we even had free transport there and back. We will definitely be returning to this wonderful hotel.
