Second visit to this very good hotel. The service here is extremely good, the staff at Reception very polite and most helpful, and whilst the hotel is large you still feel an individual and not one of a number.
We upgraded to a suite 2 years ago when we stayed here, and the room was beautiful - at the time we were offered a very good deal to upgrade, so it is worth asking what the price would be at the time. The upgraded suites I can without question recommend, they are great rooms. On this occasion however we did not have the chance to upgrade and settled for an ordinary room overlooking the first floor swimming pool (101). I was a bit worried at first as to whether it would be noisy but it was not, and we were very happy with the room. The bathroom was spacious and modern, furnishings good, although the bed was a little on the hard side. Anyone (like myself) with hip problems could find it a bit uncomfortable, but that is the chance you take with all rooms. The cleaners done an exceptional job and if you didnt want them to come in you simply put a tag on the door to say so - they would just come back later. Ten out of ten to the cleaners!
The breakfast was up to its 5-star name, everything you could want, excellent variety to choose from (and a glass of champagne if you wanted). The waiters/waitresses certainly didnt hang around when it came to clearing up plates & cutlery - perhaps a little too quick but thats not such a bad thing.
Did not have dinner at the hotel as always prefer to try different places - there are plenty of extremely nice restaurants (and bars) nearby with very good food and probably cheaper than eating at the hotel. It is not cheap to drink in any 5 star hotel and this is no exception, although having said that the bar staff\are very friendly and do an excellent job, my advice is to not spend the whole evening there unless, perhaps because of the weather you may be stuck one evening, I would say to spend the evening in "The Pub" which is the bar at reception level - the guys in there are very nice and do an excellent job.
Watch out for timeshare touts though, they can be a nuisance wherever you go in Funchal, and you may get a phone call from a Pestana agent asking if you would be interested in seeing rooms in some of their hotels in Funchal. If I were retired and money was no object I wouldnt hesitate, as I absolutely adore Funchal.
