Second visit to this very good hotel. The service here is extremely good, the staff at Reception very polite and most helpful, and whilst the hotel is large you still feel an individual and not one of a number.

We upgraded to a suite 2 years ago when we stayed here, and the room was beautiful - at the time we were offered a very good deal to upgrade, so it is worth asking what the price would be at the time. The upgraded suites I can without question recommend, they are great rooms. On this occasion however we did not have the chance to upgrade and settled for an ordinary room overlooking the first floor swimming pool (101). I was a bit worried at first as to whether it would be noisy but it was not, and we were very happy with the room. The bathroom was spacious and modern, furnishings good, although the bed was a little on the hard side. Anyone (like myself) with hip problems could find it a bit uncomfortable, but that is the chance you take with all rooms. The cleaners done an exceptional job and if you didnt want them to come in you simply put a tag on the door to say so - they would just come back later. Ten out of ten to the cleaners!

The breakfast was up to its 5-star name, everything you could want, excellent variety to choose from (and a glass of champagne if you wanted). The waiters/waitresses certainly didnt hang around when it came to clearing up plates & cutlery - perhaps a little too quick but thats not such a bad thing.

Did not have dinner at the hotel as always prefer to try different places - there are plenty of extremely nice restaurants (and bars) nearby with very good food and probably cheaper than eating at the hotel. It is not cheap to drink in any 5 star hotel and this is no exception, although having said that the bar staff\are very friendly and do an excellent job, my advice is to not spend the whole evening there unless, perhaps because of the weather you may be stuck one evening, I would say to spend the evening in "The Pub" which is the bar at reception level - the guys in there are very nice and do an excellent job.

Watch out for timeshare touts though, they can be a nuisance wherever you go in Funchal, and you may get a phone call from a Pestana agent asking if you would be interested in seeing rooms in some of their hotels in Funchal. If I were retired and money was no object I wouldnt hesitate, as I absolutely adore Funchal.

+: Large hotel with three swimming pools (two outside with sea water), good health center with all facilities (gym, jacuzzi, swimming pool and scotish shower) were free of charge; tennis, billiard also not extra charged. Location: beautiful ocean view and rocks, close to Funchal center, many restaurants nereby. Standard room is large enough.
-: Breakfast could be better for 5 star hotel, served fruits are not that best, only pineapples were good; slow service for coffee and tea; only in the end of stay we found a chef who makes fresh cooked omelets and it was a tough luck to catch him and order for yourself. No ocean promenade nearby.

I have visited the Pestana Carlton Madeira several times with my family and was the first hotel we ever stayed in in Madiera when we first visited in 2003.
The hotel is in my opinion, one of the very best in Funchal and on the island. The location is enviable of any hotel. It is directly on the ocean side and in the form of a high rise development, where the majority of rooms and beach club properties overlook the atlantic. The hotel is above the beach club and there are pools at both the higher hotel level and the lower beach club level and direct access to the sea if needed.
The hotel was formerly the Sheraton and was built by an eminent Portuguese architect and is recognised as a important building. The hotel has been completely refreshed over the past few years from its original 1970s condition and is now very modern in decor. The rooms have been modernised and re-modelled in cases, to provide mini suites.
The sea view rooms which are the majority are fantastic and command great views of Funchal or the sea (depending where you are) and are well appointed. The whole hotel is well appointed, comfortable and meets Pestana's high standards of cleanliness and presentation.
There are two restaurants in the hotel, Taverna Grill and Os Orcos which serve very good food and the former being decorated in the style of a traditional taverna. The food quality is great and you can get Dine Around where you can try any restaurant in any pestana hotel (the biggest chain on the island) for around 110 euros for 3 meals. There is also an English Style Pub, called The Pub, with a range of beers, drinks and pub style food, which is always well cooked and presented.
The hotel has some great public areas and a lovely terrace which is nice for an after dinner walk or take coffee/drinks if it is not too cold. There is sometimes also entertainment available in the hotel (singer or small band etc)
The location of the hotel in my view is very good. It is 30 minutes walk either down the hill and along the seafront to Funchal or down the main road in to the town. Buses pass the hotel and taxis are found in a rank or the concierge will call them for you (he also helps with luggage too), There are buses which pass the hotel into Funchal very frequently and there are a large range of touristy shops, bars (including an irish bar) and the casino nearby. There is also a great restaurant called Dona Amelia which is nearby which is superb. If you are self catering in the beach club, there are several supermarkets nearby which are well priced. I well reccomend Arosa flower shop which is nearby which makes some stunning arrangements from the local flowers. Go and enjoy the Carlton, you will not be disappointed and you will be really well looked after!

The pleasant & friendly welcome we received on arrival continued throughout our stay. All staff, without exception, were extremely pleasant & friendly, & nothing was too much trouble. Our room was of executive standard with the most magnificent views of Reids hotel, Funchal harbour, the open sea & the hotel's main swimming pool. We found all areas to be extremely clean, & our room was serviced twice per day. There was an excellent choice of food at breakfast & dinner, with superb service at all times. It is difficult to find any fault with this hotel, but just be aware that you can avoid a room charge of 6 Euros per day by providing your own tea/coffee & milk from the small supermarket across the road. We had a notice in our room advising us of this charge, but I understand some rooms did not. Pestana Group should be proud of their staff at the Carlton. We have no hesitation in highly recommending it to you.

We have just returned from a glorious week in the Pestana Carlton and are amazed at some of the moaners below. After 40 years of travelling abroad we know a top class hotel when we see one - and believe you me this hotel is absolutely first class. Seldom have we ever come across such a warm, polite and helpful approach from each and every member of staff - no exceptions! Salome on reception is an absolute angel. The hotel has four beautiful pools; a great gym and spa and the breakfasts on the terrace overlooking the ocean are an experience without parallel. The management of the hotel should be very proud of their staff and their facilities. Great value for money - and I should know as I'm Scottish !!!!

The best thing with this hotel is the location, close to the city center and by the sea. The pool area was also very good. And we were satisfied with our room BUT we did not pay ordinary full price as we were rebooked here from another pestana hotel. Breakfast was good, but nothing special as you would expect from a five star hotel.

We stayed here 1st week in September, an offer which gave us 40% off total price. Had to insist on larger room on arrival as they expected the single bed for my son to be squashed into the room meaning you could not actually mover around the space at all without dragging it out into corridor! They upgraded me to a suite with no fuss however. Half board so ate in hotel in evening, good variety for non meat eaters. Always a fish dish and vegetarian option. As expected, food recycled from previous sittings, but only one occasion when I felt something had gone off. Very clean, plenty of swimming facilities, lovely sea water pools overlooking ocean and dive centre attached very accommodating to my husband and son. No kids club but plenty to do in Madeira town which is clean, very easy to negotiate and friendly. I did not use spa or beauty parlour. I do not think I would have been so impressed had I paid full price for holiday but overall at that price very good value and would definitely go back as very central to town and harbour.
