We had a great week here, the hotel is ideally situated with good local places to eat if you want to eat out, for walking to town (beware the uphill walk back) or enjoying the sea and amenities or just sitting. The ease of access to swim in the sea was great and enjoyed daily.

The staff were generally friendly and very willing to assist. The notable exceptions were the two men in owner services who could do with some refresher training on their customer focus.

The buffet meals in the hotel were good with a great range of well prepared food.

The hotel is a little tired, which can be a sign of a popular and well used hotel, and the decor etc. is somewhat dated, but it happens to us all.

The layout is somewhat confusing and travelling from friends on 9th floor to our apartment on involved three lifts, but we were on holiday so who cares.

The key question, would we return given the opportunity? We most certainly would.

Location of this hotel is perfect. It is very close to many restaurants and close to the port if you will be going to Porto Santo. The pool is very big and we quite enjoyed it being a salt water pool!! The rooms are very nice, we stayed here on two seperate occasions on our trip and we had a view of the mountain once and we were upgraded to an ocean view suite the next! We loved the suite but to be honest the mountain view was amazing at night and our wind down drink before bed was spent on our balcony over-looking the city. My only negative and reason for not giving it a 5 star, although service from anyone with a trainee name tag was amazing, whenever you got someone who seemed to be older or was there for a little while you were not even greeted with a smile. This happened at the bar as well and was the only blemish on this hotel, however, the younger staff and the doormen were outstanding!

Room Tip: Try and get a corner room with wrap around balconies and windows!!!

After being switched to this hotel from the Pestana Casino, I was initially disappointed. However I read the reviews on here and was more interested! We were even upgraded to a superior room! It's strange when you come in off the street as you come in on level 6. Our room was a pool room and was on level 1 beside the garden pool. We had a lovely little private terrace with a hibiscus hedge separating us from the patio and pool area. We were able to use to 2 sunbeds directly outside our terrace for most of the time we were there. This was very convenient as we could leave our patio doors unlocked and keep going into our room when we needed things. This is a weird kind of set up for a 5* hotel. It's true, if you use the in-room tea/coffee facilities, you pay €6 to have them replenished! The minibar has only a few soft drinks in, there is no alcohol at all. In the hotel information book you are requested not to bring drink in from outside the hotel. Hmmm how to take this? Anyway, we brought alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks into the room, drank them and put the empties in the bin and nothing was said. Ridiculous rule anyway! Re internet, I enquired if there was free internet in the room and as someone else already reported, I was then given a voucher to use the internet in the room free of charge for the week! Food was delicious. We were half board, which we would not normally choose, but it was part of the offer we got. But the restaurant did not disappoint. A different soup every night, followed by a vast array of unusual and different salads, including meats and fish. Then it was onto a main course - this for me was the only problem, as I'm vegetarian and often there wasn't a good choice, unless you just wanted the vegetable accompaniments. There was pasta on offer most nights, with different sauces, but not for me for 7 nights on the trot! However, the soup and salad was often enough and then of course on to the desserts. Delicious! Wine was available though pricey at €23 for a local bottle of rose. Drinks were also expensive in the open air lounge part of the hotel. Average price €8 for a cocktail. Across the road in Pub No 2, the same drinks were less than half the price AND tastier I have to say! Breakfast was truly excellent with a large choice of hot and cold menus. Everything you could wish for was there. Staff were lovely and friendly and always willing to help. The room was large and in very good decorative order, including the bathroom which was also large and looked to be recently renovated and of course all was clean. The only complaint was the beds. I found them a bit uncomfortable and hard and sometimes you could feel the spring through it. The hotel is in a good location for walking into town. About 10-15 mins downhill will take you there. You can always jump in a bus to come back from town, at a cost of around €1.50 per person, or €5 for a taxi from most parts of town. Beware of the taxi drivers who try to strike up a deal with you. Make sure the deal they are offering is worthwhile. They are very willing to negotiate a better price as I think they are pretty desperate for business when there are no cruise liners in. All in all a worthwhile hotel and yes I would visit again!

Room Tip: If you can afford one, take a superior pool room on 1st floor - perfect start to the holiday!

Spent a very relaxing week here despite our junior suite being immediately underneath the band area. Luckily they played nice easy listening music and often finished before midnight as their elderly audience had gone to bed. The snorkelling was good - right where you enter the water there were lots of fish and starfish. The place is looking a little tired and worn out in places ie sun umbrellas and sun loungers are uncomfortable, but the place was clean and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Junior suite 417 was lovely, apart from being underneath the band area of the Terraza (but they stop...

Second time we spent two weeks here. Perfect location and direct access to the ocean. A walk away from downtown Funchal. Different pools outside and inside. Tennis court and scuba diving. Fantastic view. Book seaview. Downside: breakfast is boring.

A holiday in Funchal is a pretty chilled out affair lots of good places to eat ,nice to stroll around and the Carlton in handy to do it from ,great location but I must say the hotel is in need of overhaul it just seems a bit old and weary for a five star, breakfast is good and nice to sit outside to enjoy it .local taxis are cheap well maintained and clean nothing like the crap heap blackcabs you get in uk overall great place to go tends to be a bit cloudy but stops you burning in direct sunshine .

Room Tip: Mountain view not so good due to building plot at back
