“Lovely family holiday with a 15 month old.”
Reviewed June 26, 2013

We visited Madeira for the first time with my husband's parents and our 15 month old son late May/Early June. The hotel was everything we hoped it would be; conveniently located for the town and public transport; modern and spacious and proved to be a relaxing place to spend time.

We instantly realised that we were 'young' in comparison to other guests, but that was a good thing, we wanted a relaxing holiday, not one with hundreds of kids around a pool and discos etc...
Our son was a bit of a novelty as there were very few children there. Everyone was very friendly towards him. There were just about enough highchairs, only on the last morning did we ever have to wait for one. There were other places in funchal that didn't have highchairs, so it is worth asking. We visited the Indian (Indian Hut I believe) that is highly rated and had a really lovely meal, but they hadn't any high chairs and we were glad we had therefore gone early in the evening. The restaurant called Shelter (the Lido end) was great, had highchairs and delicious food but no baby change.

We found many good restaurants, actually not a single bad meal. The Pub was great as it was conveniently located behind reception and they were quite happy to have my son in there even in the evenings when we ate late on. It isn't the typical sort of pub and more like a relaxed restaurant as the food was really good and well priced, lovely hot chocolate too!

The buses allowed pushchairs and they were easy to get on and off. I think it was 1e 60 single back from where the cable car leaves and the stops were near the hotel. We also got the yellow bus 2 day ticket which was good value and which my son really enjoyed. (12 Euro per person).

The pools were great, if a little cold! We went in the indoor pool in the spa and both times it was empty and they even allowed the baby inflatable seat! We also went in the sea level indoor pool, which we didn't even know was there until day 3! The showers in this bit were very good too.

Final point - sorry it seems to have ended up all baby related - don't let your baby or child walk, or especially crawl, over the decked area where the snack bar is, we counted 80 splinters!

Feel free to ask anything!

Room Tip: We were on the top floor, mountain view. The views were amazing but it was very high!!! We didn'...

Just returned from a week at the carlton. We had been booked at the 4star pestana bay on all inclusive which was overbooked so they put us in the 5star bed and breakfast carlton. We were given our orange wrist band to show we were all inclusive but they did not know how to treat us.
On entering our room I noticed we had tea and coffee making facilities, we had not emptied our cases before they were removed never to be seen again. there were 4 bars but we were only allowed to use 2, if you wanted a drink at the bottom pool they would not serve you, if you wanted a burger from the snack bar between meals you had to pay for it. waiting to be served at the pool bar you were served reluctantly, ask for a beer with your dinner the waiter asked the head one if we could have one. We felt like second class citizens at times.
The hotel itself was lovely, our room had a king size bed in it ,first time we have had one on holliday, we had a view of sea and harbour which was nice, lovely to watch the firework display on Saturday night, cannot fault the room.
Outside around the grounds and the 2 pools were lovely with plenty of flowers and plenty of sunbeds, the hotel and grounds are definitely 5 star.
Breakfast was very good apart from the tiny lumpy sausages, the salads and the sweet courses were good but there was no meat or cheese with the salad. the main course for midday and evening meals were a let down, very little choice, and it was for every one, I would not recommend paying to eat here.
Outside the hotel the 3 day bus trips for 50euros are real value for money and you would pay around 10 euros for a value evening meal.
Madeira is a lovely island, the only flat spot being the runway so you are either walking up or down hill and some are steep, but if you like scenery its for you.

Room Tip: ask for a pool view or harbour view above floor 9

Stayed here for 7 nights 10th to 17th june. Lovely hotel with friendly staff. We had a mountain view room on the 15th floor. Take your binoculars and enjoy the views! You can even see the toboggans coming down from Monte. It is a little noisier than the sea views, but with the doors shut at night its not a problem. The breakfast is buffet style with lots of choice, fruit, cereals, warm foods, porridge, breads, cakes, cheeses, hams etc etc. Something for everyone. We used the gym and the indoor pool, sauna etc. The gym has all the equipment you need to have a decent workout.
Funchal is a lovely place with some excellent restaurants. One worth looking up is Armazem da Sal for a great experience. Make sure you book though.
We did a levada walk with Madeira explorers and had a good day out with a experienced mountain guide. The hotel booked the excursion for us.
Loved Madeira, such a beautiful place, totally different from Spain, Greece etc. Enjoyed all the places we visited and its good to sit in Funchal with the locals watching the world go by.

Room Tip: Ask for high up mountain view room for good mountain views

we are still on our holiday at the carlton in maderia and it is a game of two halves.

Unfortunately the hotel was full. this meant we could not upgrade, which is strange as other couples after us could upgrade.... . the description of our room was mountain view. they should enhance this to also read with dual carriage way view with lots of noise.

we are on the 12th floor which is receptive to road noise. my wife is wearing ear plugs in the evening to sleep due to the noise.

the rooms are good but not 5 star. for breakfast although you can plate an English one up, it is luke warm and not hot. omelette are made to order if you want one. so breakfast is not very good unless you like continental. something a 5 star hotel should accomplish easily it fails so much.

the cleanliness I guess depends on your maid... for us other people's hair in your room and bits on the floor for the first few days speaks volumes.

on the plus side, the hotel is on a large site, which means you should easily be able to get a sunbed in the afternoon...

the location is about a mile from funchal.. which if it wasn't for it being on a busy noisy road would be ideal.

I wouldn't come back, I feel we have made do with what we have but if I pay a 5 star price I expect the service, food and accommodation to match that. it does not.

for those under 50 try a different holiday, I felt extremely young here and I am not.!

this hotel should be kept for saga louts rather than anything else (yes certainly some here) nothing for young or even middle aged people.

stuck in time...

Just visited for the 2nd time, excellent as usual. Views amazing, food lovely, rooms very clean. Can't recommend enough! Plenty of sunbeds at any time of day.

As soon as you step into reception you are greeted with views of the ocean, really dramatic. Very friendly efficient staff.

Stayed in an apartment (4th Floor) in the Madeira Beach Club (MBC) (Timeshare) which shares the facilities of the Carlton Hotel. The reception is at street level but as the hotel is built on a cliff it actually on the sixth floor! To reach the apartment there is one lift down 6 floors then a short walk to another lift to take you down to the apartments. First set of lifts very small and cramped.
Location is ideal and only a short walk from the harbour and the centre of Funchal. (Only one hill on the way back). There are two pools, one at sea level and another (more modern) half way up the cliff. Only place that I know that charges for the use of the sunshades! Access to a small safe bay for sea swimming. (Scuba diving available on site). The gardens and flower beds are excellent and the ground-staff must be congratulated for keeping them looking great.
The sea views from the apartment over the bay are fantastic. The apartments are looking a little tired and could do with being spruced up but nothing major. (Needs a lick of paint, new carpets, decent shower). However, reasonably appointed and equipped. No flat screen TV but BBC and english programmes were available. Had a balcony with two chairs, table and two sun loungers, great for having a chilled out breakfast or to watch the sunsets. Could see the Saturday nights fireworks display from the balcony.
No WiFi in the apartments or other public areas and had to go to limited small area near to the MBC offices to get connected. Not a very private facility and other guests making video and Skype calls were a bit of a pain. The computer connected to the internet ancient and I thought that it was out of the Ark, very slow and the mouse didn't work well.
Hired a car for one week of our stay and very disappointed at the high charges for car parking. Even if you go out in the car for a day and with a 2 hours discount you can expect to pay around 10 euros per day for the parking.
Had 7 breakfast and 7 buffet dinners during the stay. Buffet breakfast was excellent and choice of continental or full fry. Dinners were disappointing with limited hot choices but plenty of salads. Watch out for drinks prices with the dinners - a beer and a glass of wine costs nearly 10 euros but in the bar called The Pub its about half the price. meals and snacks in The Pub were good value. Plenty of local places to eat and drink. Recommend the Red Lion across the road and the Irish Pub (good Guinness) just down the road.
The staff were all excellent and very helpful. Our chambermaid was really great.
I have tried to be objective and it may seem that I have been complaining but really enjoyed our stay and notwithstanding my criticisms we will be going back to stay here again.
