We visited Madeira for the first time with my husband's parents and our 15 month old son late May/Early June. The hotel was everything we hoped it would be; conveniently located for the town and public transport; modern and spacious and proved to be a relaxing place to spend time.
We instantly realised that we were 'young' in comparison to other guests, but that was a good thing, we wanted a relaxing holiday, not one with hundreds of kids around a pool and discos etc...
Our son was a bit of a novelty as there were very few children there. Everyone was very friendly towards him. There were just about enough highchairs, only on the last morning did we ever have to wait for one. There were other places in funchal that didn't have highchairs, so it is worth asking. We visited the Indian (Indian Hut I believe) that is highly rated and had a really lovely meal, but they hadn't any high chairs and we were glad we had therefore gone early in the evening. The restaurant called Shelter (the Lido end) was great, had highchairs and delicious food but no baby change.
We found many good restaurants, actually not a single bad meal. The Pub was great as it was conveniently located behind reception and they were quite happy to have my son in there even in the evenings when we ate late on. It isn't the typical sort of pub and more like a relaxed restaurant as the food was really good and well priced, lovely hot chocolate too!
The buses allowed pushchairs and they were easy to get on and off. I think it was 1e 60 single back from where the cable car leaves and the stops were near the hotel. We also got the yellow bus 2 day ticket which was good value and which my son really enjoyed. (12 Euro per person).
The pools were great, if a little cold! We went in the indoor pool in the spa and both times it was empty and they even allowed the baby inflatable seat! We also went in the sea level indoor pool, which we didn't even know was there until day 3! The showers in this bit were very good too.
Final point - sorry it seems to have ended up all baby related - don't let your baby or child walk, or especially crawl, over the decked area where the snack bar is, we counted 80 splinters!
Feel free to ask anything!
