The Hotel is excellent in every way. The rooms were extremely comfortable & clean, the food excellent & the staff very friendly & efficient. The Hotel is in an ideal position for walking into Funchal & enjoys wonderful views over the Bay. There are plenty of local restaurants serving very good food.If you have any problems during your stay the hotel could not be more helpful(T hank you Lisbeth !)

Room Tip: If you like sitting on a balcony in sunshine choose a seaview room. However the mountain view is won...

We stayed here as an RCI exchange. Our room was excellent with separate lounge and bedroom and small kitchenette facility. WE were given a discount card by guest.s services which got us 10% off drinks and food in the hotel and surrounding restaurants which we used every day. Free internet access to RCI guests was also great. Our only issue was on our departure day our check out time was 12 noon. We had the maids at our door at 9.30 and then 10.30 to see if we would be leaving in order that they could clean the room. We then at Mr Spinota one of the managers call us at 11.15am asking when we would be vacating the room . We had a taxi booked to take us to the airport at 11.45am and would have checked out before our allocated time. Based on the last day issue I doubt if we will return

Room Tip: ask for a seaview room

Having visited Funchal on two other occasions, we always liked the look of this hotel so decided to try it and weren't disappointed. Had a pool view room (which means you get a sea view as well) and it was well worth it. Balcony had sun ALL DAY so it was nice to sit out there if you didn't want to go down to the pool area. We had a standard room which was more than adequate in size. Previous reviews say TV is limited but we found quite a few English channels including BBC and ITV. Never found those in Spanish hotels!! Hotel is very clean and I'm sure the towels were changed every day. We found all the staff very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was superb - they had EVERYTHING! It was so nice to sit outside overlooking the pool having breakfast and sipping champagne on Mother's Day! The main outdoor pool is huge and we were quite often the only people using it. The indoor pool/gym/spa area is wonderful - the staff there are very friendly. The only complaint I would have is that they don't replenish the tea and coffee in the rooms - quite poor for a 5* hotel. For first-timers to Madeira - it's a beautiful island with lots of interest. Book at least one island tour to get the real flavour of the place. Would definitely go back to Madeira and definitely to the Pestana Carlton.

Room Tip: Pool view rooms means you also get a sea view - well worth it. We asked for a high-up room and had o...

We had a mountain view which was spectacular but choosing a sea view would have given us a sunny balcony most of the day. Easy walk into Funchal centre downhill and a bit of a struggle coming back. Taxi back from MacDonalds 5 euro inc tip was well worth it.
Breakfast was great with plenty to choose from hot and cold.
Otherwise meals were average in the Pub to expensive in the Taverna Grill. We chose to dine out most of the time at local establishments which were great.
Staff generally very good and attentive but did observe a narky waiter at the next table one breakfast time, who wasn't helped by the attitude of the guest either.
Overall a 5 star just about, as tourist hotels go. It was our second visit and good value for money in a package deal. We would certainly go again.

Room Tip: Sea view costs more but is also south facing for sun all day. Mountain view has great panorama ov...

This hotel is pretending to be something it isn't. It's a tall block of apartments on a traffic thoroughfare, with further apartments at ground level and below. The traffic noise and pollution at the back was a nuisance, but the view to the mountains very good. The breakfast room is quite nice, large, airy and with access to outside terrace. The pool areas are excellent. The 'pub' is awful! The cocktail bar is devoid of atmosphere and too dark and enclosed. The rooms are ok if 4 star. The service variable, ranging from very helpful to curt and unfriendly particularly in reception. The food was fine at breakfast, but poor in the pub. We chose to eat out a different establishments each night. The weather was very good.

Room Tip: Depends if you want the sun shining in all day and a pool/sea view or cooler room with mountain view...

Big rooms, great views, Fantastic location, beautiful little garden, good pools (2 out 2 in), nice tennis court (little bit pricey if you lose balls over fence...), sea access, watch out for the big crabs! Breakfast superb, staff very friendly and helpful.
Take extra tea and coffee etc if you do not want to pay for extra in room. Towels are a bit dried out, TV is limited, Wifi is ok in foyer. Drinks and food purchased in hotel are not cheap.
Indian across the road was superb but not cheap.

Madeira Fantastic, love the place... : )

Well we has stayed In many Hotels on this Island and so far we have not been disappointed . The Carlton still has that oldie worldly charm that you can imagen it had when once it was the Sheraton . Recently refurbished it boosts spacious rooms with a view to die for ...
Plenty of swimming options including a large free form garden pool that is heated in the winter ideal for that early morning dip.
The entertainment is low key but classy with a singer every night in the cocktail lounge that is served by your own Birdcage style waiter that remembers your tipple .
We ate in the Taverna it was excellent and you actually feel as if you are in an authentic Maderian Taverna make sure you pick the table de hote it seems to be the best option and the sweets are top class !!!
The only critizism is that the Pub looks out of place and that there should be a welcoming cocktail bar for a pre dinner apperitife . All in all the staff were amazing and you were very much treated a a special friend not as a tourist would I return..... Yes !!!
