My family and I stayed here over the New Year period and generally enjoyed ourselves. It has all the attributes required to make it a really top quality 5 star hotel and yet there are some aspects that let the establishment as a whole down.

I'll start with the good stuff. Our room had an outstanding view of Funchal's mountainside from the hotel's 16th floor. The room itself was ok with excellent mattresses, blackout curtains and pillows. The staff were for the most part all very friendly and hard working, especially the doorman who helped us on a couple of occasions during our stay- top man. The hotel makes the most of its stunning location along a cove with excellently positioned cliff top rooms, poolside bars, jacuzzis only metres from the sea, 2 large pools, a small pier jutting out to sea, scuba classes directly offshore, an indoor spa, a bar that gets going in the early hours (or at least it was at 2am on New Year's day!) and only a 10 min stroll from Funchal centre.

Now the not so good stuff. Parts of the hotel don't look as if they have been changed since the early 1970s. They could really do with a face lift. The breakfast for a five star hotel is very poor with a limited selection of items. Then again, this has been my experience in all hotels in Portugal so it may well be that expections regarding breakfasts in Portugal are different to those elsewhere. There is a charge of 5 euros an hour to use an iron! £180 a night for our room and we had to pay five euros for an iron that didn't even have steam! This came across as mean and ridiculous for what is after all a 5 star establishment and not a roadside motel. There was no wifi in our room with reception being the only place where wifi was available.

We had a great time at this hotel .Everything that we expected. However the prices of the drinks and food we outragous .I know that prices within a hotel can be high but these were beyond that so be aware.Lots of work being done in the grounds and a great new indoor pool and chill out area just opened.

Room Tip: Sea view is a must !!! amazing

We stayed at this hotel for Christmas, idealy located, just a short walk into Funchal, which was brilliantly decorated for Christmas with loads going on.
The room was on the fourth floor with views of the pool and the sea (breathtaking). Spacious room and bathroom, TV with English channels , very clean with excellent room service twice a day.
Bed very large and exceptionally comfortable with large deep pillows, excellent nights sleep.
True when the tea making ingredients run out you have to pay for extras.
Very nice pool and pool bar.
The Christmas eve gala evening was not as good as expected , food very good but atmosphere disappointing.
Staff very friendly and doorman could rememer our names after first day.
Avoid any time share special deals or offers in the street for anything which may sound like time share.
Would stay there again

We really enjoyed our holidays in Madeira and in this hotel during Christmas time. We were using RCI timeshare so I cannot compare rate to other hotels.

I think that the best thing about this hotel is the location (by the sea and close to downtown). Our room in the lower complex had two balconies close to the Atlantic ocean and for night and day it was a very relaxing hear waves hitting the shore.

The hotel has two big outdoor sea water pools and also a really nice place to swim in the ocean. They were also finishing construction work of a indoor pool and jacuzzi while we there.

The hotel is a bit worn, but that does not really matter as other aspects are great. Also personnel were really friendly and helpfull, especially in the reception desk.

We will be back for next Christmas for sure.

We stayed at the Carlton Madeira over Christmas. Our room was very spacious with large balcony and lovely view. The bathroom was large and modern. The staff were very courteous.
The only downside was the breakfast. The food was very basic for a 5 star hotel. However the rest of the hotel made up for it.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the pool
