After reading other reviews about this hotel complex, expectations were high but the Porto Mare simply blew us away. We've stayed at a number of great resorts over the years but there's something very special about this place. The staff from all parts of the hotel are terrific, efficient, friendly, multilingual and unobtrusive. Management have definitely got it right.
Our room was large, well furnished and had a great view of the pool and amazing gardens. The beds are large and very comfy.
The restaurants are also a highlight; we ate in the main buffet restaurant most nights and found this to be of higher quality than others in the area. That said, the local cafes and restuarants are absolutely fine for a change of scenery. The Portugese, Mediterranean and Italian restaurants are also great, but requires deeper pockets.
The Porto Mare is about 20 mins walk to the centre of Funchal but you could take the free courtesy bus for free or a taxi for 5 Euros.
What amazed us most was that you could get a sunbed at any time of day. You are spolied for choice for both indoor and outdoor pool locations, 2 jacuzzis and umpteen quiet spots to read a book or just chill.
The fact that Thomas Cook have a stake in the Residence tells you that this complex is high quality and is geared for Brits. You will find europeans and scandinavians here too but it is all very civilised.
Funchal is a great little town for strolling around, some decent shops, cafes and restaurants. Again you'll find the locals very friendly and respectful.
In a balanced review, it is important to say what we didn't like. Sorry folks, there's just nothing to gripe about.
The worst part of the holiday? Leaving this idyllic setting after two weeks was hard.
We'll definitely be back.

My husband and I have just returned from a fabulous holiday at the Porto Mare hotel in Madeira. The front of the hotel is quite unassuming but once inside the reception is bright, airy and cheerful. Our check-in was easy and it was one floor up to our room. As soon as we got in the room it was clear that I would not be needing the antibacterial wipes that I take just in case! Our room was exceptionally clean and very well equipped, the huge bed was comfortable and there was no noise to disturb our sleep. The room was in an excellent location, central to everything, and we had a fabulous sea veiw. I would recommend the cable cars to get to Mont, but if you're unsure about the height then for only one euro it is quite easy to take the bus up there. The catamaran trip was very good although we didn't see any whales, dolphins or turtles. In my opinion the bus tours are a rip off. There is a choice of doing the red or yellow route, we opted for the yellow one because it went to a fishing village that we liked the look of. It cost us 24 euros for two days and we only used it for one trip because it just didn't really go anywhere that a normal bus didn't and that only costs 1 euro per trip. We opted for flexible dining which meant we had 3 nights to eat in the hotel and 4 of our choice. On the resort is a a la carte restaurant called the Med, we used our flexible dining vouchers to eat here twice. The service, food and setting were exceptional, I would highly recommend it. The breakfasts were of a high standard and after a free kitchen tour, it was obvious that food poisoning is out of the question. Every aspect of our stay was perfection.

Porto Mare was great. We had booked for self catering in The Residence and didn't really understand the difference when we ended up in the hotel itself in self catering rooms/suites(apparently because we had been overbooked) . As a family we have always done self catering and therefore expect something fairly basic but functional. This was certainly not basic but was very functional! Beautiful rooms with all amenities; very clean; billions of towels; maid service; great big beds with spotless linen; balcony with sea view; PLUS (very essential) proper cooking facilities; POTS AnD PANS ETC. . Apparently in the Residence it is even better with a proper kitchen! Even my kids (3 older teenagers) were impressed; in fact my eldest said to me " but Mum, what's going on, we don't DO this sort of holday"(usually).
All staff were friendly; informative and multi lingual from the reception staff to the cleaning ladies, who were absolutely lovely, very friendly and amenable. It is so nice to be greeted with a cheery "Good morning" from a (Portuguese )lady with a cleaning trolley!. Other facilties were amazing; swimming pools; indoor facilties if it is cool; spa facilities; views of the sea; happy hours at the various bars; guided walks on the wonderful levadas around the island.
And Madeira is just lovely; flowers; fantastic scenery; friendly people; (although I intend to learn some Portuguese this year so that I can talk properly with them) and wonderful walking country.
We went there in memory of my Mum who died earlier this year and who had told us how much she loved Madeira. I can really see Why! It's a wonderful island and the Porto Mare experience absolutely made it for us. I can't praise it highly enough! Can't wait to go back next year.

Have just returned from our fourth visit to the Porto Mare and will be booking shortly for next year. The sub tropical gardens surround a large lagoon pool which leads to a further smaller pool and jacuzzi. The gardens are breathtaking with every plant named and immaculately attended to. The bedrooms are large, comfortable and spotless. We stay on a bed and breakfast basis and there is a wide choice available. The fact that we return to this hotel speaks for itself. The hotel staff are outstanding and make us so welcome when we return. The manager and his team are extremely dedicated and genuinely want you to have a pleasant holiday. When you check out for the first time you become a member of the prestige club. This is a loyalty benefit for returning guests and entitles you to various discounts in the hotel and surrounding shops and attractions. There is a courtesy bus which takes you into Funchal and there are various bars with entertainment in the hotel complex. A favourite restaurant of ours is Casa Italia which is located in the street next to the hotel(out of the Eden Mar entrance and turn right, down the hill on the right). The food is very good and Fabio is the best waiter in the world! All the others are also excellent! There are various things to see and do in Madeira and I can recommend the Sea Born catamaran to see the dolphins......just magical! Overall, this hotel is beautiful and if you are considering it you won`t be disappointed. Madeira is a special place and stunningly beautiful.

Have recently returned from Porto Mare, after choosing on the basis of Trip advisor reviews and it's website. Didn't disappoint and we had a lovely time. Very customer focused from the point of booking.

We had a small problem with the taxi fares arranged by the hotel and this was resolved immediately (by the manager) in such a good way we were even more impressed with the service !

There was a mature crowd but also familes with kids. The only thing that would be great is if the hotel had access to the sea. Otherwise great.

Second time at the Porto Mare. A peaceful oasis with a wonderful garden. Rooms are spacious and well furnished. Sea view good although not much traffic out there.
Main restaurant serves an extensive buffet, all of good quality, changes quite a lot from night to night, good deals available if you pay for 3 or 5 nights in advance.
Staff very friendly and helpful.
Pool could be a bit warmer, evening entertainment a bit better, but you cant have it all.
Looking forward to return next year.
Hired a car from Strawberry World 100m away, very easy. Went all over the island, driving a bit of a challenge but fun if you like that sort of thing.
There is timeshare on site, but out of the way. We spent 2 hours looking at it and got a €50 reward. It is superb quality accommodation but not for us, a bit expensive.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your support by once again staing in a Porto Bay hotel and for sharing your holiday experience on Tripadvisor.

One of the characteristics of Vila Porto Mare is that we have different options for different holiday needs. Within the complex we have three distinct products that combine different facilities with a lovely garden. Has we have a mix of clients coming from different countries sometimes it is not easy to fulfill all the expectations and the entertainment is one if the areas where we need to find a better solution...we promise you we will keep trying...

With best regards and hope to see you in a future stay.
