“Best Hotel We Have Stayed in”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2010

The room was spacious, spotlessly clean (and believe me I looked - I always do!) and had contemporary new furniture. The beds were large and comfortable. Check in was very efficient and the staff were helpful and friendly. I would recommend a garden room with a sea-view - pure paradise! The food was amazing (especially the desserts) and they even do a tour of the kitchens. This hotel caters for huge numbers effortlessly and very hygienically. If you are looking for a noisy, crowded, lively environment, this is NOT the hotel for you. The guests are mainly over 50 years of age. There is a sophisticated calm atmosphere and the only place which appears busy is the dining area. There is a happy hour in the cocktail bars and the entertainment was for example: piano concert, jazz night, dancing show although not many people attended these which was a great shame as they were of a high standard. There is free internet access at Reception but guests are not to stay longer than 15 mins at a time which is fair. We were slightly disappointed that we had to pay to use the safe.
The Guest Relations Manager did a great job of making us feel welcome. She arranged tours of the hotel and gardens and even a Portuguese lesson. There was a daily courtesy coach service into town. There are a lot of German tourists here and the staff are multi-lingual. I would definitely return to this hotel again for a relaxing and peaceful holiday

My husband and I stayed at the Porto Mare Hotel for 10 nights and we had a lovely time the hotel is clean the garden is very well maintained with a large variety of trees and plants which was a pleasure to walk/sit around in. Staff in the hotel were always very friendly and very helpful. The food in the hotel was very good there was a choice of 4 restaurants to eat from we tried 3 as we didn't have enough time to try them all due to the variety of food on offer in all the restaurants.
The hotel had a courtesy bus to take us into Funchal but it is in walking distance and if you are lucky to walk passed the Presidential Palace and the gates are open you can go in and have a look at the gardens well worth doing as there is a lot to see and it has a nice view over the harbor.
We would definitely go back to this hotel and I can highly recommend it there is a relaxed atmosphere about the whole place.
The Island has had a very hard time due to the floods in February but the people of Madeira have worked very hard to make sure Funchal was cleaned up and they have done a wonderful job as there was hardly any evidence of the disaster.

This is the best hotel we have stayed in, so much so that it is our fifth visit in as many years. We have even booked for 2011.
The vast grounds are planted with an oasis of lush trees, shrubs, flowers plants and are so beautifully and extensively landscaped, interspaced in areas with unobtrusive sun loungers. These were mainly unoccupied on our visit. There is a large outdoor pool and childrens pool very well maintained with a couple of bars asnd eating areas.
The indoor pool and spa areas with good sized gym are adjoining the large pool 1.5 mts deep.
The hotel itself is ultra clean and so very well decorated and maintained. The rooms having all the usual facilities including free fridge and safe. The air-conditioning is excellent. The sea-view rooms having lovely views over the gardens and outwards to sea,tea and coffee making facilities (albeit fresh milk has to be bought from the nearby supermarkets), flat-screen TV, hairdryer etc. are all standard. There is a nice balcony with two chairs and table to sit and enjoy the views.
At breakfast there is a wide variety of food to select from including cereals, wide variety of fruit etc., cold meats, cheeses English breakfast choices and usual additions. All superb quality. We ate in the buffet restaurants on five evenings which have a theme night on each day of the week. In addition there are always plenty of different choices from the cold or hot buffet selections. The hotel do a special deal of 23 euros for 3 meals and 21 euros for five.(less discount for prestige members)
It was also nice to eat out in the many restaurants nearby or in Funchal. We particularly enjoyed L Osteria, a short walk up Rua Casa Branca on the right hand side.
Superb food and setting with food and drink reasonably price. You need to book though on an evening to ensure a table.
Also we enjoyed the food at the OChefe Steak House situated below the Eden Mar shopping complex, on a balcony at the far end and above the Supermarket. Great Food and the steaks superb.
Quick snacks throughout day can be bought from Pasteleria Lido Gate - turn left outside front door of Hotel and its just on right hand side next to Spa Supermarket. Delicious sandwiches for app 2 euros and coffee 1 euro. Eat in or take out..
Courtesy bus runs to and from centre 4 times in a morning and 3 timess afternoons.
Places wewll worth a visit, details from information Office, are Cathedral, Blandys wine lodge, Monastery of Santa Clara (2 euros entry with guided tour) and the Quinta Cruzes Museum @2.5 eruros nearby.
Day trips forget your tour operators trips and go to STRAWBERRY WORLD (at main road junctions turning right from Hotel) Tour operators charge 42 euros (inc. mediocre lunch). Strawberry World charge 16 EUROS with much more luxury coach and interpreter and reserved seating. We use them every year.

All in all Porto Mare is a hotel of the highest standards and thanks to the lovely, friendly hard working people of Madeira things are back to normal after the terrible floods in Feb.
What a beautiful Island. and an equally matched hotel

Have just returned from our 2nd visit to Porto Mare in 6 months - friendly and welcoming environment with plenty of sun locations around the pool and gardens to find your own 'space'. The staff are first class as is the cleanliness of both the hotel complex and promenade by the sea front.
We travelled all over the island and the mountain scenery is spectacular- catch a look at the old roads cut into the cliff face - no longer used for those with a nervous disposition!! There is little evidence of the flood damage and is a credit to the island given the awful tragedy.
Food is excellent in all restaurants within the hotel although I was a little disappointed that the menus had not changed since last November - but who am I to complain in being able to visit twice in 6 months?
We will return next year in June to ensure more stable weather - rather patchy and mixed during the first two weeks of May.

Returned again having found this hotel exceptional last year. Had a few minor gripes which added together were enough to ask to talk to the manager.
He handled our concerns superbly and went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable and was particularly helpful in assisting with the delay consequences of the volcano.
This level of concern for customers deserves to keep this hotel amongst the top rankings.

We (2 adults and 2 children ages 4 & 6) stayed in the Residence for 1 week in a 1 bedroom apartment so can't comment specifically on hotel rooms but expect they are equally as good. Our apartment was extremely spacious, the bedroom had 2 double beds and the lounge area was plenty big enough for the sofa bed the children slept on.

The room was immaculate and furnished to a high standard, the kitchen being well equiped also (not that we used it for anything other than breakfast).

As for the Porto Mare complex itself we cannot fault it. The spacious grounds and numerous pools meant that nowhere was ever busy and sunbeds were never a problem, at whatever time of day. On the busiest day I counted a maximum of 12 people in the large outdoor pool by the Residence & Hotel and there were still empty beds. The facilities were very good, everywhere was clean, tidy & safe and we were happy to let our 2 girls wander off on their own in the gardens and pool area.

The kids club and mini golf were a big hit with our two though I think the kids club only runs in school holidays. Don't expect too much from the kids club, it is only 1 or 2 hours per day but it gives the kids a chance to mingle with others and have a break from Mum & Dad and do something different - and it is free of course.

We spent about 4 days in the hotel and 3 days out and about seeing the sights of Funchal, I don't think there would have been enough to keep us amused for another week, not being lounging around the pool type people and the children being too small for the levada walks. The courtesy bus was handy to get into Funchal but not always conveniently timed for getting back but a taxi was only about 6 EUR so hardly expensive.

We ate in 3 of the restaurants at the hotel (the Med, Alfama & Il Basilico) and all were very good, the Med being the stand out one. Some people complain about the price but although more expensive than local restaurants we found them to be of a higher quality in terms of food and service than the other restaurants we ate in, not an authentic Madeiran experience perhaps but a very good experience none the less.

We didn't see any of the entertainment in the evening, it generally being too late for the children, so can't comment on that other than to say it is there. There are a series of daytime activities of which we tried a few of the fitness ones, again all free and good.

We would have no difficulty in recommending this to others, and we expect to return, it being an ideal place for some spring sunshine and some relaxation. I would also thoroughly recommend Madeira itself, maybe limited on the beach front but although relying heavily on tourism it still feels unspoilt, there not being numerous English themed pubs etc. Not sure the children will enjoy it so much in their teens but we have a few years yet before that becomes a problem.

We have just returned from a wonderful stay in this hotel, It was everything it said it would be in the brochure and more. From the moment we stepped over the threshold we were extremely impressed by the facilities, ambience and the service from the staff at all levels.

We were taking my elderly mother in her late 80s and my disabled husband so I have to say that like others I was very concerned to read many of the earlier reports about sickness. I think that it is important to realise that where people are in a close community like a hotel, infections do spread easily and norovirus is a highly contagious airborn virus. We took sensible precautions having handgels and antiseptic wipes with us and were fine. The hotel had also taken measures to ensure that hygiene was a priority with plenty of hand gel dispensers around the restaurant areas and encouraging people to use personal spoons to take their food in order to avoid cross infection. The majority of people used this system and we were unaware of anyone being ill during our week's stay. To anyone who is worried I would say don't be; just be aware and take sensible precautions as we did.

The hotel facilities are superb and provide lots of opportunites for residents whatever the weather. Madeira, like many places around the Mediterranean has had a very wet winter and the weather has been very difficult to predict this year. Although it was warm it was a bit unsettled in the early part of our stay but we did have some glorious days as well. There are several activities organised within the hotel as well as other excursions or thrills that you can subscribe to. Equally if all you want to do is relax around the pool or in the grounds there are plenty of seats and loungers and some lovely quiet spots where you can relax and be undisturbed.

There were lots of opportunities for excursions and we chose to hire a taxi for our trips which was both very flexible and good value for money. The hoilday tour organiser, Cathryn was excellent and always prepared to help and assist us in any way she could. She certainly helped to make our trip a great success.

The variety of food outlets within the hotel complex were impressive and there are also many more within walking distance of the hotel as well as those in Funchal itself. The hotel runs a courtesey bus each day; it is on a main bus and tourist bus route and there is a local taxi rank just outside the hotel.

It was our first visit to Madeira and we all thought that it is a wonderful island. It has brilliant and spectacular scenary, such interest and variety in the places in and around Funchal that there is plenty to suit all ages. Even when the cruise ships were in port it was not so busy that it became a hassle. We went to visit the gardens and they too were spectacular and varied even if they do seem to all be built on a very steep hillside!

We had a brilliant stay here and we would certainly recommend this hotel and Madeira to others without any reservations.
