“Our kind of Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2012

Our second visit to the 'Madeira Regency Cliff' hotel (2 weeks) so we knew what to expect. Not too large, just 58 rooms, clean, comfortable, spacious bedrooms and excellent public areas - bar, restaurant, terrace, swimming pools (a bit small). Food was very good and the service excellent. One tip though - avoid bedrooms on the lower floor (Floor 1) because the balconies are very public with other guests constantly walking past on their way to the indoor swimming pool. Apart from this, first class all around and we hope to be back to this hotel soon.

We have just returned from a pleasant 6 days in the Regency cliff hotel, unfortunately we had booked for 7.
On arrival we were told that due to an "anomaly" in the booking system the hotel had no rooms available until the following and day and taxied us to what was (despite the hotels assurances to the contrary), an inferior hotel further away from the town.
On our return the next morning we spoke to the manager, Iolanda,,who made the necessary apologises, and upgraded us to a premier room, and provided a couple of complimentary dinners, We enjoyed the rest of our week.

On the good side:-
The room and views were excellent, Free w-ifi was a plus, and the terrace overlooking the ocean spectacular for an evening drink or breakfast..
The a-la-carte menu was good and we received excellent service from Catia..
Housekeeping and cleanliness were excellent.
Happy hour was a good idea.
On the down side:-
The dinner buffet was poor and rushed, The restaurant included a number of tables virtually in the corridor. and sitting at one of these ruined our dining experience. We did feel that the terrace could be used for evening dining.
The breakfast buffet was O K but far from special.
Our up grade included use of the safe in the room, but I understand that this is usually charged..

At the time we were annoyed but felt that we had been fairly dealt with by the manager, and therefore considered returning for a later visit. However, on our return we have found that the hotel has been repeatedly overbooking for at least 5 years, and do not feel able to support a hotel that has such a low opinion of it's guests.

Room Tip: try for room 310 with a double balcony

Just returned from a superb week at this beautifully situated hotel.
We travelled with friends and we were both given upgraded rooms from the superior ones we had booked.
All rooms, whether standard or suites have stunning ocean views and balconies. Our friends were given one of the 2 suites which really was very special but our premium room was equally as good if not quite as spacious. A nice touch is the tea and coffee making facilities.
Breakfast was buffet style but contained everything you could want for a continental style or a good choice of hot food.
We purchased a package for 3 evening meals and enjoyed the menu choices but were a little disappointed with the Indian buffet, mainly because we prefer waiter service which on the other 2 occasions was excellent.
Liked the size of the hotel as with 59 rooms it had a 'boutique ' feel to it and the staff were very friendly.
It is a long walk into the centre and old town but the hotel will arrange a shuttle taxi at certain times, free of charge, and there are plenty of taxis and buses at other times, but there are lots of shops and restaurants within the Lido area.
If returning to Madeira would have no hesitation in returning to this hotel.

Room Tip: All rooms have superb views over the ocean.

Just spent 11 days at the Madeira Reg Cliff with my husband. Very clean hotel, very polite & pleasant staff. I would like to mention both Catia and Roberto who were the best, always smiling, polite and very efficient in restaurant & bar, real assets to the Hotel.
Our room was big with lovely views but bathroom was not what we expected in a 4* hotel (shower over small bath with a leaky hose!). We did hear other guests expressing same opinion about their bathrooms!!
As far as the restaurant is concerned, although we were asked to choose a time for our meals on our arrival, we had to queue for a table on a few occasions, especially when terrace was not available. The restaurant seemed too small and understaffed to cater for the amount of guests who were half board. Buffets are three times a week but the food was fairly poor and not always warm enough by the time we came down for our meals, again not up to the standard of a 4* in our opinion. However the 'A la carte' menus on the other nights were overall tasty and well presented. Breakfast was ok but nothing special.
Having to pay 25 euros for our safe at the end of our stay was a bit of a surprise as that is the first time it has happened to us when staying in a hotel, it is apparently normal practice in Madeira??
The Hotel has small outdoor and indoor pools but pictures on their website & brochure show additional larger area by the sea with pools etc which has nothing to do with the Hotel, a bit misleading!
Finally, and in addition to my review of this hotel, beware of 'Time-share scum'. We were approached in the street by someone supposedly representing the 'Regency Group' (showed us the name on his paperwork) and doing a survey for them. After a while and having again supposedly won a couple of prizes, we realised what it was all leading to and walked away!! We have since found out it is quite common.
Funchal is a beautiful place, clean and the people are very friendly everywhere you go. However, if we do go back in the future, we would not stay at the Madeira Regency Cliff as we felt we paid for far more than what the Hotel can deliver. My opinion is based on comparison with other 4star hotels we stayed in over recent years in various places.

Dear Guest,

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your comments which had our best attention. It is always with great regret that we acknowledge that we did not meet our guest expectations and for this we apologize.

We would like to comment some of your observations:

Food: We served around 60 dinners per night during the month of September and fortunately had, until now, no complaints at all. However we understand that it is very hard to please all guests, as far as, food is concerned as everyone has different tastes.

Swimming pools: We do not agree that our site is misleading as the pictures show our swimming pools exactly as they are, however we repect your opinion.

Time Share: Regency Cliff does not belong to a group or sell time share, this unfortunate situation is beyond our control.

Please accept our most sincere apologies for not being able to fulfill your expectations,

Kind Regards

Have just returned from our 5th consecuative visit to the Regency Cliff Hotel after another wonderful pleasant holiday. When we researched for a hotel 5 years ago, including via Trip Advisor, we were looking for a small hotel in an excellent location, with a balcony so we could enjoy overlooking the ocean and possibly Funchal. We also wanted a warm welcome and special service from friendly staff. We have kept returning to this 59 room hotel because it provides all we wish for and more for a special holiday - we now feel its just like coming home and seeing old friends and making new ones amongst the.staff. On arrival we very quickly slip into the relaxed atmosphere and we sit on the balcony enjoying the view whilst we organise our itinery. The rooms are spacious and kept spotlessly clean and apart from the balcony, tea and coffee facilities and a fridge are provided, together with an en suite bathroom, including a bath robe.
There is a small outdoor pool and a indoor pool and gym and the hotel provide the necessary towels. Meals can be taken inside or outside, weather permitting and I think a lot of people enjoy the opportunity fo having breakfast outside on the terrace overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. A good breakfast menu is available and lunch can also be purchased down by the pool. There are varying evening meal menues and themes available but we prefer to go down into the Old Town and try the numerous restaurants.
The hotel is 3km. from Funchal which is easily reached by walking, free hotel shuttle taxi at certain times, bus (buy tickets from reception for 1/3 or 5 days)or the taxis are not too expensive. There are a number of good restaurants locally and an excellent shopping centre The Forum close by.
Over the 5 years we have visited many of the delightful gardens around Funchal, travelling by bus or cable car. There is a golf buggy ride at the Monte Garden back up the hill for 2 Euros.
We always try to have a boat trip to see the dolphins and this year we also ventured on a jeep safari , which proved to be one of our favourite trips. We enjoy doing the various round the island trips and a visit to Nun's Valley has now become a tradition.. We find plenty to occupy us, even if its just a stroll along the Promenade seeing which new Cruise ships have arrived.
We are always sad when our holiday ends and we say goodbye, promising to hopefully return. We have in fact already booked for a week in February for the Festival, whilst we organise ourselves for hopefully another return trip in September. Thank you Regency Cliff Hotel for allowing us to have such a lovely quiet and relaxing break in such pleasant surroundings.

Room Tip: A higher level room gives you a better view but there is little or no noise throughout.

We don't usually go to the same place twice, but I can see us returning to the Regency Cliff. We picked it, having read other reviews and were really pleased with it. We had a one week stay 10-17 Sept and had glorious weather. The hotel was clean, staff friendly and helpful (always making sure I had a veggie option at dinner, if I wanted it - I had merely mentioned to them on check in that I was veggie), our room was spacious and so quiet. We were on the first floor with the most wonderful view and it was so peaceful. Beautiful setting, with nice walks nearby. The indoor pool was good but the outdoor one was just what we needed in that heat! The poolside bar offered tasty snacks and the restaurant offered a good buffet breakfast and great buffets on some of the nights. The staff were very helpful - giving us info on bus timetables etc when we asked. Although we didn't use it, the hotel offered a courtesy bus into/out of Funchal. I asked for a different hairdryer as didn't like the one in the bathroom and had one almost immediately. It was great to be provided with pool towels too. A nice touch was on the Tuesday evening when all guests were invited to cocktails with Iolande (Manager) who introduced herself to the guests and chatted with us.
As far as Madeira itself, we'd recommend you go up in the cable car(s) and then down on the sledge...you don't need to get a taxi the last bit, it took us about half an hour to walk. Definitely do a Jeep safari as the views are fantastic, experience great fun, roads scary and meal delicious. A trip on the local bus to Machico is also worth a trip, as is a tour to nun's Valley - what a view from the top!! We also recommend having a meal in the old town at the restaurant on the corner (red terrace) by the cable car station....called something like 'Tipassol'. You must try the scabbard fish - definitely with banana....and some passion fruit liquor.
We'll be recommending Madeira, and the Regency Cliff....without doubt!!

We spent two weeks at the Regency Cliff, booked with Saga. The location of the hotel was ideal for a first visit to Madeira - local walks, shops and banks nearby, and frequent buses to/from the centre of Funchal. The staff were all welcoming and helpful - as well as being multilingual in English, German and French as well as Portuguese. Our room was on the lowest floor - half-way down the cliff! - with a balcony adjacent to the terrace and outdoor pool, and a few steps from the indoor pool. The room was a good size, comfortable and clean, with sea views from the balcony. We had booked the half-board option, and breakfast was buffet-style with a good choice of hot/cold savoury food, fruit/yoghurt and bread/pastries. Dinner was an excellent buffet on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with a table d'hote served dinner on the other 4 nights. The choice was limited but generally very tastly - a la carte is available if you dont fancy anything. The wine list was 'Portuguese only', but this gave us the chance to try some excellent wines not found in UK supermarkets! One slight disadvantage was the small size of the pools, which meant they were rather deep in order to hold a viable volume of water, but the pool area was well maintained with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas for a warm September. And, yes, we've booked to go again next May - half-board this time, so that we can sample some of the many restauarants in the local area, as well as travel further afield.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on level 1 close to the pool, as balconies have little privacy.
