After spending 2 weeks at the Orquida, we cannot fault this hotel.Breakfast provides hot hot baked beans hotdog sausages bacon scrabbled egg bread to die for cold buffet, coffee machine with hot water for tea.Good position to explore the old town bus on the main road for Monte.10 mins to front, a number 2 bus will take you back up the hill for 1 euro 95.We also had a lovely buffet for new year including drinks and champagne while watching the fireworks from the hotels terrace which has gorgeous views over the city, well recommended. The staff were always there for us and to advise us on places to visit, trips can also be booked at the hotel we had 3 lovely trips meeting people from all over the wold but that could also speak English and 1 to Porto Santo..

We chose this place because of its location in central Funchal. And the location is very good, pretty close to the center, restaurants and the old town as well as bus stops.

Other than the location I could not find any nice things about this hotel. The staff was very moody and generally not too helpful. We were given the crappiest room in the premises, I've seen they had nicer ones with more space and balconies, yet our room was cramped, in a low floor and the shower construction was almost falling apart.

The worst thing was the food though. The breakfast buffet feels like being warped backwards in time well into the early 1990s. If you're under 60 or vegetarian or even vegan, you will not be happy with it. Dinner in the restaurant is even worse. If you don't eat meat or fish, you have to stick with potatoes and some slices of tomatoes and carrots at the dinner buffet.

Ok it's not 5 star. It's 3. Rooms are nice, good bathroom and cleaned daily. I read reviews before arrived and the restaurant in particular got a slateing. Well, continental breakfast is what it is. Toast, rolls, cheese, salami and European quality ham. Ok coffee is typical machine coffee. This hotel is good enough. Positioned on north east corner of city. Once your used to the map and little roads your 5 mins walk from the extra amazing cafè culture this city has. Consider the room rates for all the other hotels and honestly tell me this isn't a good deal.

The hotel is almost in the old town, so all the bars, restaurants and other places are reachable by few minutes walk. Our room had an air con, a balcony, was cleaned daily and was cosy. The parking lot is in the building in front of the hotel. The staff was not the friendliest. But the biggest disadvantage was food. We had only breakfast, but all 7 days hot dishes were the same: baked eggs, sausages and beans, and they were not hot.. And the coffee was really bad. But all in all, we used a room only for sleeping, so it was more than ok :)

At the hotel and it is great for kids. The only complaint I have is guests staying at the connecting 2 sister hotels which are self catering are taking up the pool area and entertainment seating area even though they have there own facilities. Also, they have not paid for all inclusive which means they have to pay to eat and drink here however, they are coming into the main hotel and helping themselves to food and drinks from the eating areas. We have mentioned it to the hotel reception who seem interested to do something but don't.it makes me think I could have paid £2000 less for my holiday and copied them....however I have morals.
