Good hotel at a good price. You can see the sea from the roof, where there is a sun terrace. No swimming pool though, if that is what you are after, and non near. But we chose it for it's location. Breakfast is good. Beds are a bit hard but ok. No wi-fi in bedrooms. Air conditioning great. Only downer was the bar. Useless and really pricey for such an hotel. It closed at 10.00 pm every night, and that was in the middle of summer. Quiet area of the city too. Would definitely go again.

Room Tip: choose a high floor to get any kind of view, otherwise you won't see anything except a street.

Came here for one night only on business, hotel chosen by company so unclear on cost. Rooms clean and comfortable. Free wifi in lobby. My only criticism was the basic evening meal. Charged for tap water (only £1 but a bit penny pinching). Breakfast much better. Reception friendly.

We picked a hotel in central Funchal, not requiring a noisy pool-area or a boulevard of souvenir outlets. And Hotel Orquídea turned out to be perfect. A modern building with rooms, large enough to breathe in, with a small balcony with two chairs, aircondition and a fine bathroom. The breakfast in the 6th floor restaurant was more than adequate and the view acroos town to the sea from the sun terrace on the roof was nice. We stayed there most mornings, enjoying the january sunshine, relaxing and reading. Staff was friendly and service in the Bar Zero was good. If there had been a british style tea and coffee maker in the room, everything had been completely satisfactory!

Good location. Rooms better than expected for the 3 star price. Everywhere clean and staff helpful. Breakfast basic and the quality of the evening meal reflected its bargain price, but I would recommend the excellent BonFix restaurant just along the road. No pool, no bar in evening. Good views across Funchal from the rooftop terrace. All in all very good value for the price.

Finding the hotel by car is not easy with all the one-way streets in Funchal. Also this hotel is located close to one of the main roads, but on a small one-way street, not far from the downtown area (about 5-10 min on foot). The hotel lobby and the restaurant are decorated in a modern, tasteful fashion, but the rooms and corridors make an outdated impression with clearly worn out and stained green carpet. Our small room had a TV, an air-conditioning (which really is a blessing considering the small balcony overlooks the noisy street) and a comfortable bed. The bathroom was spacious, but unfortunately not very clean, with some strange red/brown splashes close to the ceiling and hairs in the bathtub which were certainly not ours. Breakfast is served in the restaurant and was mediocre: the cakes were not properly cooked, the fruit was not ripe and as with all hotels in Madeira: the cheese and the cold cuts were of the "budget"-kind. Free WiFi is provided in the lobby. The hotel does not have parking spaces, but a public parking garage is located around 50 meters away. Staff were friendly and very accommodating, allowing us a very late check out at no additional cost. In short: excellent location, you'll get a good night's rest and the staff is great, but a couple of things could and should be improved.

I loved this hotel for many reasons: it is downtown, it has good breakfast, the price is acceptable and most of all, the receptionsists were so friendly and complaisant. I had so many questions and all of their answers and tips were useful. You have a wi-fi connection as well as a free of charge access to a computer.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony - it is small but those rooms have better view (on the street but whic...

Booked in for a week. Fifth floor room with limited sea views available from balcony.(Lower floors don't have sea view). Room of reasonably good standard, if basic in some respects. Very good aircon, adjustable. Let down slightly by badly crazed wash-basin surface and battle-scarred net curtains where shut in balcony door in the past. Could overlook these short-comings however as beds (2 wide singles forming wide double) were very comfortable. Clean towels daily and beds changed regularly. Double-glazing excellent in keeping external noise to a minimum (noted complaints about noise in other hotels in city). Breakfasts were generous with wide choice of foods, regularly replenished, enjoying splendid 6th floor views over city & sea. Had one evening meal in same restaurant, on the set 16.50 euro menu which was quite good value. Also dined out in City nearby where wide choice of venues, cheaper or dearer as required, from 7 euros up (great value for a main course) Hotel very handy for nipping down to attractive sea-front attractions and not too bad a walk back up-hill. Staff friendly & helpful. Overall good value & would use again. Enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Only 5th floor rooms have sea views (Limited). Fantastic views over City & sea from 6th floor Di...
