We own a timeshare at the Royal Savoy, but did not stay this year as we have let our week out, so cannot really comment on the condition of the apartments and service for this year, but I will say that the apartments are beautifully furnished, we have a spacious one bedroom with two lovely marble bathrooms, well equipped kitchen and sitting room (+ sofa bed), which easily sleeps four people.

I would recommend the Royal Savoy for comfort and quality, but it is not cheap!

We did visited friends who were staying this year.

We do stay most years and love the quality of the hotel and the apartments, also the pool areas are spacious with the best sun beds ever! lovely thick pads and complimentary beach towels.

Negative points:- Pool bar prices have to be the most expensive on Madeira and the service leaves a lot to be desired, we used to eat lunch here quite often, but not at these prices!
The advantage of having a kitchen in the apartment is you can at least make your own lunch.

My oh my what a difference 12 months make! This is my second review for a hotel my first being the Excelsior Palace in Taormina, Sicily and how disappointing that was. Difference betweeen chalk and cheese where the Palace was resting on it's rather dilapidated laurels the Royal Savoy certainly lived up to it's reputation and name.

All I can really say is excellent, excellent, excellent 5 times for this is what the Royal Savoy delivers. Alright some folks have complained about the price of the food well we took the half board package at the outset and were not disappointed at all couldn't fault it in anyway. The outstanding meal had to be the 'candlelight romantic evening' when our bill came to just under £20 and that was just for the alchohol drink as much as you want for a tenner each, what! Breakfasts were good and varied waiters attentive and they remembered you both in the restaurant and the piano bar. Drinks in the bar were half the price of the Palace so a tenner for two G & T's as opposed to £20 is not at all bad in my book. Room was very clean, neat and tidy had every thing you needed and the cleaning staff did an admiral job
and the views from the balcony were just stupendous.
Ok again some folks have said that it's lacking in 'character' well that really depends on what you want. We wanted 7 days of chill out being looked after by courteous and attentive staff and that is what we got. I mean what's wrong with realaxing by one of the many pools, few drinks then getting ready for dinner. Pre dinner drink at the piano bar, cracking meal with live entertainment then post dinner drinks back at the bar with more live entertainment. If you don't want that then go somewhere else.

All I can say is that the RS delivered exactly what we needed and as in those immortal words by Arne S 'We will be back!'

Room Tip: Go for a junior suite, minimum or if you can afford it the next category up.

Following on from previous reviews - we are timeshare holders at the RSavoy - we visited again in early September 2011.

If you are looking for a place for perfect relaxation, a sedate pace and top quality surroundings in an ocean facing resport then the RSavoy is for you. It continues to meet virtually all our expectations. It is difficult not to totally chill out at this place.

Very good quality rooms with mini-kitchens enabling self catering to be an option if you wish. All rooms have sea facing balconies suitable for dining as well as simply enjoying the view.

It is an easy walk to Funchal centre and the harbour.

However, if for a holiday you are looking for somewhere with a faster pace, lively / noisey entertainment then perhaps the RSavoy may be not what you are looking for. The relaxed pace may also inhibit older children who may want fun and games in and by the pools.

One aspect of the RSavoy is a little frustrating. Its flagship restaurant (the Amada) has a somewhat disjointed menu and meals are priced at a very high cost even allowing for recognition of the 5Star status of the resort. Similarly the price of drinks & coctails in the piano bar. As a result relatively few use these facilities which detracts from the creation of "atmosphere".

Despite this we did order a pizza room service meal one evening to eat on our balcony which was served in exemplary style and spot on in terms of its timing against the requested time. And that did offer good value in our view.

Just returned from the Savoy where I holidayed with 10 family members. The ages ranged from 15 to 80 and we all had a super time.
The setting and service are second to none - especially Fatima on reception who is most helpful and Bruno in the bar.
We are going to return again next year.

We are Vacation Club owners and have had 2 weeks in a 2 bed apartment every August since 2005. We love Madeira and love thi with you as hotel. The location is ideal, just a short walk away from Funchal town. We stayed near the Monumental Lido on our first visit to Madeira which was much more of a commercial/touristy zone. The staff at the Royal Savoy are the most friendly I've ever encountered. The reception staff, bar staff, pool staff and door men are all excellent and give an excellent, professional service. They take time to chat with you and do seem to remember us each year. We have an 8 year old daughter who has made lots of friends with children who visit at the same time each year. The pools are idyllic and spotlessly clean. The new pots of petunias around the pool area were particulary lovely this year and gave a welcome spread of colour. The rooms are kept spotlessly clean and are serviced daily with fresh towels each day. The beds are changed regularly and it's always good to come back to the room and find a chocolate on your pillow.

On the negative side, we do find the bar/restaurant prices to be pretty high. A coffee is €3.50 as opposed to €1 in town and a Magnum ice cream €3 compared to €1.60 at the shop nearby. 2 drinks in the bar one evening cost us €15. The bar is lovely and the entertainment is good but as others have commented, it is fairly quiet and therefore lacks atmosphere. If the prices were reduced, we would spend a lot more evenings in there as I'm sure others would also. In the early days, you would struggle to find a seat in the bar but that isn't a problem anymore. We eat breakfast and lunch in our apartment every day as the prices in the hotel are far too high. We never eat in the restaurant partly due to the prices and partly due to lack of atmosphere/lack of other diners. We were very dissatisfied this year to be charged €3.50 at the pool bar for a jug of tap water! This has been free in previous years but apparently as 'people were ordering water and not drinking it" they decided to charge. Ridiculous! The hotel does need painting externally and we have commented about this to each other each year. I like the decor and the rooms are extremely comfortable with a very well equipped kitchen and lovely bathrooms. Dispite the above, we love the place and can't wait to return next year. We only came home yesterday but miss it already. If you do decide to visit Madeira - go on a trip to the North East coast - it's stunning
