“Lovely hotel!”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

We decided we needed some sunshine in May so went for an all-inclusive, high star rated hotel. Unfortunately, the sun arrived every other day for a short time and the food was not brilliant being a self service buffet. At times the food was only luke warm and huge queues formed. Your wine glass only was filled if you were near the waiters stations.
There are three alternative restaurants with only the sushi restaurant worth a visit. The Italian and Maderian restaurant were very average.
The bar in reception got very busy at times with only one barman working most of the time.
The room was beautiful with a side view of the sea. The public area were very clean and modern.
From the hotel to Funchal town centre was a hilly walk of about 45 minutes. The cable car ride was excellent, as was the ride down the hill in the wicker chair. The fish market was also worth a visit.
All in all, a lovely hotel but, in the even of us returning, we would opt for half board.

As our usual hotel (the Monumental Lido) was being refurbished this year, 8 of us booked the Enotel Lido instead and were not dissappointed. This must be one of the first all-inclusive hotels on the island, but bet it won't be the last. Qualtiy of the drinks (and quantity!) and food was excellent, only complaint being a vegetarian that despite there being a large choice of hot meals, there was never a separate vegetarian one, and those that looked as if they should be i.e. 'rice and beans' had small ham pieces scattered over the top, and the pasta which should have had vegetables in it had seafood as well. Still, that is a minor detail, as there was always a good choice of salads, and the desserts were delicious!
Unlike your other reviewers we felt the 'Italian' evening was a great dissappointment. It is in the usual poolside cafe, and the food was really poor - there certainly wasn't an Italian chef that night and the pizza was inedible, unlike the ones during the day at the same place which were great!
We had a large room with side sea view on the third floor, and could have upgraded but for an extra £200 or so we felt it really wasn't worth it, as you don't spend much time in the room. Beds were firm, but great bathroom with separate shower and bath. Everywhere spotlessly clean!
The weather was fantastic - one of the best weeks we have had on Madeira - and it was a pity the outdoor pool wasn't heated at all as it was really rather too cold for swimming. The indoor pool was OK, but smelt strongly of chlorine and you had to buy a swim-cap for 4 euros - the only extra we had to pay for!
All the staff were really friendly, and made our stay a great one - though the look on the face of the barman on the first night when we asked for 8 drinks had to be seen to be believed!
We love Madeira, and would be quite happy to go back to the Enotel Lido.

Well that's a bit of a lie. I'm actually in the reception area of the hotel 3 blocks down (The Porta Mare) where they have FREE WiFi. It's 20 euros a day at the Enotel Lido. It's December 22nd. Everything says it'll soon be Christmas....except the weather. It's hot and sunny....wonderful! The Enotel Lido is excellent value for money. Into the third and final week of our holiday in beautiful Madeira. Our first ever 'all inclusive'. Excellent food. Plenty to choose from. Good selection of FREE branded drinks and quality local wine and Coral beer. If Funchal was full of lager louts instead of Saga louts, the streets would be awash with drunken Brits abroad. As it is, the 'grey army' (of which I am one), treat the unlimited free booze on offer with a certain respect. The staff here are exceptional. You must try the three 'themed' on site restaurants if you stay here. Japanese, Italian and Madieran. You have to book. You get waited on. Even sung to by the lovely Fatima. She will brings tears to your eyes with a traditional Fado. All FREE, and makes a nice change from self service. Entertainment is a bit 'Madeira's Got Talent Rejects', but there is an excellent saxophone player called Bazzillio who along with his trio, put on a very good show. Check out the Enotel Plus office while you are here. There is a 'Time Share Opportunity' if you must (we didn't), but you will get a choice of a half price excursion as a 'thank you' for listening to the marketing pitch, which takes about 45 minutes. The full day trip around the West of the island was breath taking. I would say that the Enotel Lido is more 4 star than 5 star, but I'm not complaining. It has to be high end all inclusive. Got to go now. Christmas Carol Concert in Funchal tonight. Got to change out of these shorts, enjoy a lovely meal in the Atlantico Restaurant, sample a few ice cold beers before setting out into the warm evening sunset. Happy Christmas everyone!

This was my second stay at Enotel Lido having stayed a week over Christmas last year. The staff really go out of their way to make you feel welcome creating a lovely warm friendly atmosphere. I had a room on the 5th floor with pool view facing west which caught the afternoon sun. If you don't like your room view ask to be changed, they will do their best to accomodate you. The beds are a little on the firm side but again ask and they will provide a matress topper which is very comfortable, also a kettle in your room if you ask for one. They still have the smelly drains problem which is most noticable in the night, the maids run the water all the time when cleaning the rooms which must do something to get rid of it, some rooms are worse than others as regards the smell.
The food in the buffet resaurant is mostly good and varied but was not quite as good as Christmas last year. If you dine a little late at lunchtime it does look decidedly tired and dried up in some cases. A little imagination is needed in presentation, there are too many dishes of what looks like leftovers mixed up in mayonnaise. The italian buffet at the poolside is a better choice for lunch. The three themed restaurants provide a welcome change from the buffet but again these were not up to the standard of last year, maybe they up their game at Christmas.
The hotel location is just right being in a quiet place with a nice walk along the front which is part uphill to Camara de Lobos. It is a 40 minute walk down hill into the centre of town, catch the local bus back the bus stops very near the hotel. The live entertainment is mostly very good with a pianist in the reception bar and the guy who plays the sax is just magic. The dancing girls are just embarrassing, pathetic, they should get rid of them. The Wi Fi is expensive but I was informed that the hotel had signed a contract with a firm for 3 years which will run out next year and things will change then. There is a cafe below the hotel where for the price of a coffee Wi Fi is free

Room Tip: 6th floor rooms are at street/ reception level, the higher the better.

We have visited Madeira many times in the past but not for about sixteen years. The Island has changed so much. High rise hotels have replaced banana plantations but, unlike many Mediterranean countries, you never see piles of bricks and rubble along the roadside. Many improvements have been made to make travelling round the Island even more memorable.
We had the pleasure of staying at the Enotel Lido for almost two weeks and wished it was more. It was early December and we tried to return for New Year but could not obtain a flight.

The hotel itself was a joy with incredibly friendly and totally efficient staff who could not do enough for you. We stayed on an all inclusive basis which was a first for us, and could not believe how generous the hotel was with their food and drinks. The food was excellent, fresh, good choice, beautifully cooked and impeccably clean. The staff in the restaurant were very special - nothing was too much trouble from the head waiters to those who cleared plates etc. There was always a cheerful welcome when entering and help, if necessary, to find a table. I have mobility problems and from the first day the staff made sure I was not seated too far from the buffet area

We did not have a brilliant outlook - side sea view but looking out onto a side road which could be noisy at times, It was as stated "standard room with side sea view" but I would request a room also overlooking the garden next time. I think the hotel should be rated 4+ not 5 as the bar in the reception area made the reception quite crowded at times.

We will definitely return to the Enotel and I am sure it will be like returning to a group of friends.

Room Tip: Upper floors give better views and less noise if you are overlooking, or near, the roads. There are...

We booked this hotel at the last minute to get some winter sun. We were really pleased with our choice. The hotel is spotless. We upgraded our room as we had a young baby and wanted a bit more space to relax whilst she was sleeping. They provided a very nice wooden cot for us.

We ate in all the restaurants. They were all very good. The bars were very good and the drinks were premium brands. The staff were very friendly and hard working. It was too cold to use the outdoor pool but the indoor pool was very nice. The majority of the guests were elderly and a few were slightly horrified by our baby's presence in the restaurants and in the pool but on the whole everyone was welcoming. The spa is fantastic and well worth visiting.

The location is very good, we walked into the town most days and there is a bus stop outside.

Only down point was the expense of the Wi Fi, in this day and age it really should be free!

Stayed here end of November for 3 nights. Firstly Funchal is a fabulous place to visit - a hidden gem! We were very lucky to have great sunny weather so we were able to explore the town and enjoy the fabulous views. However this hotel was a disappointment - definately not 5 star, more 3 star. The room was adequate, basic and with an unusable balcony that was at street level looking out over parked cars - not ideal for relaxing! The pubic areas were smart and clean but the hotel lacked any warmth and ambience, it felt so sterile. The bar was in the reception area so felt very exposed. The pool area was fine but sunbeds were hard to come by if you got there after mid morning. We were on all inclusive and this was fine - beer and wine were acceptable but the cocktails were dire! Do not bother they were just a flavoured cordial with lemonade and whatever spirit was required -ugh!!! Food in main dining room was ok but not 5 star standard by any means and neither was the service - both mornings we pretty much had to find our own table, plates and cutlery! The worst experience though was the so called Italian restaurant - basically the lunchtime cafe with checked table cloths thrown over the plastic tables and a candle on each! Full lighting and the most awful music playing - a distorted cd of il divo so loud it hurt! And the food - well gourmet it was not, more like reheated pizza and pasta from lunchtime. It was so bad we still laugh about it now! Overal this hotel is fine for a clean comfortable base but that is about it. We also found it too far out of town to be able to walk in in the evening. We will definately be returning to Funchal but not to this hotel.
