“a hotel with character and charm”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

We really loved this hotel. Lots of character and old fashioned charm. The staff were very friendly and helpful with booking trips, bus timetables etc. Close to the old town museums and good restaurants. It is a bit of a hike up the hill but if you are used to walking its really not a problem and the views are spectacular.

Room Tip: Definitely worth paying for a room with sea view

This is a charming old fashioned hotel that is quite tired and in need of a refit, but offers great value in a good location, with the best views that you could wish for over Funchal.
If you are looking for a modern hotel with the latest facilities then this is not it. There is however a small unheated pool on the roof with amazing views, and a wonderful terrace where you can enjoy breakfast or an evening drink whilst taking in the view over the city. There is a computer in the reception area for guests use, and the staff do their best to help with local information.
The breakfast is standard European buffet style with cheese, ham, cereals, yogurts, bread rolls and croissants, with plentiful tea and coffee, and some appalling watered down fruit juices... standard stuff really and it does the job!
It is a nice 5/10 minute walk downhill to town, and there are a good selection of local restaurants in the area without having to walk the 20mins across to the Old Town area. The walk back uphill later really isnt that bad... this is Madeira, everywhere is hilly, and if you are not on the island to enjoy the walking then what on earth have you come for!
The hotel could be stunning if someone spent some money on it, as it is the position and view make it good value and worth staying in.

The place certainly had character even if it lacked other things. My room, on the top floor, only had a small skylight but there was a small balcony overlooking the back of the hotel. The room was quiet and the bed comfy. Nothing hot at breakfast, but plenty to fill up on for the day. The staff spoke good English and were helpful without being over friendly. The hotel is set high up above Funchal, hence the great view, but also hence the walk back is very steep and certainly wouldn't suit anyone with mobility problems.
There are a couple of parks with cafes within 5/10 mins walk and the centre of Funchal isn't much further. A couple of small supermarkets just round the corner so handy for drinks etc.
My only real complaint was the water. Being at the top I had to run the water for at least 15 mins before it got warm and at one point it went off altogether. Another problem with the water flow was fixed the next day.
I wouldn't hesitate to stay again if the price was right.

Room Tip: Not the top floor, but rooms on the back seem quieter.

Nice and friendly staff, good breakfast, marvellous view of the island, a very good place to relax and enjoy the cozy time in Funchal.

The facility may need some upgrade considering the rent is not super low. But if you are not a person demand a lot, it is still recommended as the hotel is with a nice environment and the design is very classic.

The hotel is not in the hustle and bustle area and takes 15 minutes back to the main road. But it is easy to go down as it is just a straight way. You can find quite a few nice museums on your way down which is worth visiting.

Room Tip: ask for a room with sea view

We stayed here for a week in February 2013 and really enjoyed it. The place was built in the 1920s and is full of character with an eclectic mix of styles, photographs and paintings throughout. If you want everything modern and soulless it's probably not for you, but we loved it. The staff are all very polite and helpful and hotel, although a bit shabby outside, is spotlessly clean inside. Our room was light and airy with a new bathroom, and the best 'loo with a view', right out across the rooftops of Funchal to the Atlantic beyond. Breakfast was fresh and plentiful, but the coffee was not great. The hotel is up the hill from the centre of town so you get fit, but it's only about 15mins walk up, 10 mins down. Lots of good restaurants within 10mins walk. I'd certainly go back there.

Room Tip: Go for the sea view... beautiful

Stayed for 5 night over New Year. Certainly don't think this was value for money. Old and in dire need of some investment and upgrading. The smell from the totally unventilated bathroom in our room was awful, and the door did not close properly. WiFi was intermittent. Beds were comfortable and breakfast OK. Whole place smelled of stale tobacco and in spite of the no smoking signs the manager seemed to light up at every opportunity. There are much better places to stay in Funchal.

We stayed at this hotel in February, 3 nights and everything was really OK. Very pleasent people, breakfast was good and enough choice of food...We had rent a car, and parking place in front of hotel is very small (just 5-6 cars), but recepcionist are always redy to help park the car (you can left the key and they will do everything for you). Only one 'negative' thing is that hotel really nead restauration, but inspite of that everything is clean. Location is good (quiet place), in Funchal everythin is up and down, so is this place too. Wi-fi is good, but not in the rooms, just on the groundfloor, at the reception. I recommend this place, because for small money you will give a lot :-)

Room Tip: if it is possible, ask for room with a see view...it is nice to wake up in the morning and enjoy
