The hotel is situated on a very steep hill above Funchal. The public bus service into Funchal is frequent and cheap but the last bus leaves at approx 19.00 hrs. You can buy a ticket on the bus or from the bus station in Funchal. The hotel bus service runs a very limited service. This was unfortunate and prevented us enjoying late evenings down in the town.

Most of the cafes/restaurant in Monte close early so you can't get a good evening meal up in Monte except at the hotel. If you want to eat out you need a rental car.

The hotel was quite disorganised. We could not use our room safe because there were insufficient keys for all safes. You have to order one in advance if you want to use the safe. We had to carry all the valuables that we needed access to with us which was a drag.

I have never slept on pillows that were so thin. You had to double them over and even then they weren't worth having.

We had booked a room with a garden view. I have posted photos of the view we actually had from our room - a roof. We were on a building site with the sound of electric tile cutters and general building work going on until 19.00 hrs. We were also below the doors where all the delivery lorries brought in supplies so the smell and the noise was a nuisance.

The room was very basic. On of the ceiling lights was broken and the electrical wire was hanging down in the bathroom through a hole where the fitting should have been.

We had one very average and not very tasty meal and one good meal at the restaurant. The breakfast was good with plenty of fresh fruit, bread and cakes.

The experience was nothiing like the video on the hotel web site. The common, public areas were quite nice, but the rooms were disappointing.

I recently stayed at the Quinta do Monte just north of Funchal, Madeira, with my mother who is in her 70's. All I can say is if you want peace, relaxation, attentive staff and a location that has the wow factor, this is the hotel for you. The decor has a refined grandeur with antiques and original works of art, all areas are spotlessly clean and the indoor pool is heated to a pleasant 28 degrees. Outside there are several acres of gardens with abundant bird life, tropical and temperate plants and a series of pathways that wind through the lush vegetation. Everywhere there are magnificent views down towards the city and the sea or up into the mountains to the north. The staff excelled. On asking the bar tender one evening that we fancied just a few biscuits and cheese with our wine, he kindly explained that the menu only offered a full cheese board. We declined and took our drinks back up to our rooms, only moments later the bar tender appeared with a small selection of cheese and biscuits that he had asked the chef to prepare for us, and for no charge. The reception also was extremely helpful with all our questions about transport, tour options and information on Madeira. How refreshing to find staff that are thoughtful, professional and really go out of their way to ensure their guests have a wonderful stay. We will definitely be going back. Well done Quinta do Monte.

My wife and I were travelling with a UK based specialist tour operator - Inntravel. We spent 3 nights of our holiday based at this hotel. We paid a bit extra for a superior room on the 4th floor which had a great view and loads of space.
Pros: very pleasant hotel, luxurious superior room with complementary bathrobes, slippers and even a welcome bottle of Madeira wine! Restaurant pleasant and food of good quality especially the "a la carte" menu. Bar food was surprisingly good value starting at 2.80eur for a delicious ham sandwich. Pleasant public rooms. Great views over tropical gardens down to Funchal. Own beautiful tropical gardens. Pool and hot tub. Good transport links - free shuttle bus to Funchal Free shuttle to "dine around" at any of the 3 sister hotels around Funchal. Convenient location for Monte Palace Tropical Gardens and Monte Toboggan, cable cars to Funchal and Botanical Gardens.
Cons: Half Board option not necessarily good value - may be better to go BB and choose what you want from the "a la carte" menu. No wifi (although a single very slow Internet PC provided in Reading Room).

Would definitely like to return here one day!

Great location with very attentive friendly staff. Weather was slightly unseasonal (cold) but the log fire in the lounge soon warmed us up.

They ran us into town in the courtesey bus for shopping on a couple of days, the other days were lavada walking - breathtaking if a bit scary on the narrow ledges in places.

Great food in the restaurant and the bar though the euro exchange rate made it comparitively expensive.

Did not do the toboggans but did get the cable car to Funchal - never realised how strong the British connections were until had been to the Madeira story centre.

Lots to do though to be honest we took the opportuinty just to take it easy and chill.

Would like to go back one day.

We stayed half board at the Quinta do Monte for 10 nights which is about 20 minutes from the airport. It is a beautiful, elegant hotel without being stuffy, set in beautiful gardens. Transport could not be easier. There are two cable cars, one at the foot of the Quinta's garden taking you into Funchal, one just past this taking you to the botanical gardens. Buy the ticket at reception for discounted ticket prices, currently 12.5 euros for a return ticket. Buses 21 and 20 run from Monte square but an easier bus to catch is the 22 from Barbosas, a five minute walk from hotel and a flatter walk. The quinta has a courtesy bus which takes you into Funchal 3 times a day (and back if needed). You can also visit the other hotels in the Charming group by courtesy bus if you wish, use their facilities and eat in the restaurant. On the ground level of Quinta Do Monte there is an original toboggan, hammock ride and lovely old photographs. There are several relaxing areas for reading etc. Breakfasts were a buffet style including champagne, fruit juices, cereals, fruit, cooked breakfast, bread/rolls, jams, meats ,cheeses and cakes etc Drinks consisted of either ground coffee brought by a waiter or a selection of teas, decaff coffee etc. Lunch and evening meals are available in the bar, drinks and tea were available outside on the terrace in the afternoons. The evening meals in the restaurant were superb and different every night over a week and repeated the second week.. The waiting staff greeted us when arriving at the restaurant and were friendly, professional and very attentive and got to know our particular drinks etc. There were 4 courses every night but with variations including a candlelit meal, a typical menu, degustation 'tasting' menu etc most meals had a choice of dishes, one was a set menu, one was a buffet style and unlike a previous comment our Italian night was delicious with about 4 different lasagnes, several pastas and accomplishments - all hot. One evening we had an invitation to apperatives in the bar before the evening meal which gave us the chance to chat to others staying at the quinta we might not have met. One night we had a folklore evening when a group of 8 dancers accompanied by singers and musicians all dressed in costume performed traditional dances with audience participation - great fun! Another evening we took the courtesy bus to Quinta Das Vistas for a 'Fado' evening of traditional singing, again we had a lovely meal and we were collected at 10.40pm. We cannot fault the staff at Do Monte, all of whom were friendly and very helpful. The receptionists knew the answers to all our questions about the island, about excursions, bus times and where to get them etc. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable, had a bottle of Madeira wine and Madeira cake on arrival and we had a garden view with the harbour/sea view in the distance. The pool was quite cold when we first used it but we were told that it would warm up and it did, to a pleasant temperature. There is a small gym and a snooker table and internet access in the library. We had a wonderful, relaxing holiday and loved the experience of walking the Levadas, one of which can be done from the quinta to the Palheiro Gardens stopping at Hortensia Tea rooms (not to be missed) taking about 2 hours to get to the gardens and then on to Camacha. We would highly recommend this hotel.
