We stayed here as the final hotel on a walking holiday with Inntravel. It is quite an imposing entrance and the receptionist was impersonally professional, although others were much friendlier. Our room was a welcome sight - 2 big beds (our only gripe were the pillows which were thin and lumpy and not what I would have expected), good bathroom, plenty of storage space, good balcony and a lovely view over the gardens and down to Funchal through the trees. We were staying half board and dinner was a little uncomfortable as there were only 3 couples eating in the huge dining room and the 2 staff waiting tables were very attentive. The cost of drinks on the menu were ridiculously expensive. Monte is flagged as being an elegant and upmarket area but it must be said that apart from a couple of basic bars/cafes, there is nowhere decent to eat, and nowhere at all in the evening apart from the hotel - strange! The hotel is a couple of minutes from the Cable Car station. The courtesy bus is excellent - and free.

We really enjoyed being up in Monte, a bit away from the big crowds. It's quieter and also cooler than down in Funchal. But of course, you will have to use your rented car or bus/taxi (or cable car!) to go to other places.

The hotel provides fair value and has very friendly staff on all levels. Don't expect too much from the swimming pool. It's there, but that's definitely not top level.

Room Tip: The suite is fantastic, but all rooms have balcony and are very quiet.

Quinta do Monte is situated in the mountains where the air is fresh and humid. It's also easy to go for levada walks from there. The hotel and the rooms are nice. Only the bathrooms are so damp and cool that it's difficult to get the swimming suits dry. However, I've never slept better in a hotel. The air is so fresh and the hotel surroundings are quiet.

The hotel sits high above Funchal in the village of Monte, where the air is cooler and fresher. It is surrounded by lush madeiran vegitation and the area of Monte has an interesting history, the last of the Hapsburg dynasty was exiled and died here. There is a sense of grander times and peacefullnes in the evenings when all the tourists have left and you have it, more or less, to yourself. The view of Funchal from the hotel grounds is spectacular. There is relatively easy access to the levadas Tournos and Serra for fabulous walking from the hotel and there is the cable car down to Funchal - but expensive and you can acess the island via the bus service. The local buses are great fun, cheap and punctual, there is also free hotel transport up and down but it will be taxis if you are late in Funchal which is around E25-30.
The service in the hotel is unassuming, always very genuine and friendly and of a high standard. Rooms are always spotless and they all face the hotel grounds. The food is a little trickier - we have learnt that is is more reasonable and of a very high standard to eat from the a la carte menu and not the set menu which is expensive and of variable quality. The bar snack menu is good value with generous portions and freshly prepared. There is a lovely cafe in the grounds. There are very few options to eat outside of the hotel at night unless you eat at one of their sister hotels when you will be transported there and back. This is a good way to look at the other hotels in the group and the different locations.
We just love this hotel as, for us, it ticks every box and so far has never disappointed

Room Tip: top floor, away from the lift and the service area

We stayed for three nights at the end of our walking holiday after a tough levada walk from Camacha. The hotel lies in Monte high above Funchal and operates a free bus shuttle to Funchal & back as welll as free shuttle service to three sister hotels where you can use the facilities and dine there. There is an indoor pool and a vast garden. We had three gourmet dinners (8 courses) and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Sadly, the fog never lifted and there was no view from the huge hotel bedroom with wonderful balcony.

Room Tip: All rooms have a view & are great
