“Relaxing and quiet .......but Ostentatious and lacking in facilities”
Reviewed April 10, 2009

We stayed at the Bela Vista in August 2008 after much reviewing and searching. Our welcome was very polite and our room was large with a balcony overlooking the drive and courtyard. The air-conditioning was not working and, although bearable, took 3 days to fix. If you like regency/stately home type rooms...this is for you, I think the TV dated from the same period as some of the furniture too! For a 5 star hotel, the lack of tea/coffee making facilities within the room is surprising. If like us you wake early and like the routine of a cuppa in bed, calling room service to deliver a silver tray adorned with a pewter teapot filled with the weakest brew imaginable, for 6 Euros a throw, is just not cricket! The 'Quinta is some distance from Funchal centre, and I would not recommend the steep walk (through a much built up residential area). A Courtesy bus is scheduled throughout the day but does not run later into the evening should you wish to dine out.
The Pool area, as many have said before, is excellent. Very quiet, relaxing and clean. All drinks are waiter served and the pool-side snack bar is also a nice spot to look over the bay and the hill-side...although again, expensive. We ate in the Manor House restaurant 3 nights out of the 7 and the quality of the food and service was excellent, very special (and taking into consideration the return taxi fees added to the "poorer” offerings in town) worthwhile! The outdoor ambience of a table on the cobbles outside the Manor House in the grounds is superb (only slightly tarnished by the background music of Katy Melua ...every night)
Overall, I think the Quinta is a grandiose, quality hotel. We are both in our 40's, well travelled and appreciate the 'finer things in life' but believe the Bela Vista is more suited to a sedate and older clientele of which its charm and antique's will impress, With its lacking of a few essentials (Room facilities, TV Tea/coffee) the location, and the overall cost, does not represent good value (Which sums up Funchal as a whole for us)

An absolutely beautiful hotel. Full of charm, with the most beautiful gardens and a very gracious staff that made our stay even more enjoyable.

In need of some much needed relaxation I can honestly recommend this hotel. The view over Funchal at night is stunning.

Cannot find fault with this establishment.

Every member of staff we encountered was friendly and very helpful, making us feel at home and being neither pushy nor servile. The room we occupied was spacious and comfortable - as were the beds. The ensuite bathroom was a good size and well equipped, even down to the non-slip mat for the shower and the helpful grab-rail.
The grounds are lovely and immaculate: the pool is beautifully maintained with not a leaf floating on its surface even after a stormy night. The view over Funchal and the bay is stunning. The food in both restaurants is abundant, varied and delicious and the waiting staff give the impressiion of really caring about the standard of service, without any unnecessary flourishes of napkins or pulling out of chairs. Everyone was good-humoured and contributed to an extremely pleasant week.

I regard myself as a seasoned traveller and very much aware of a quality property. This hotel is quite exceptional in all aspects of its performance. From the courteous welcome at the Reception and throughout the hotel. All staff have a genuine desire to make ones visit memorable.Their command of the English language is impressive. The hotel furniture and lounges resembles a more sedate age, you will note the porcelain and oil paintings in the Old Manor House which dates from the 1840's.
The small building near the swimming pool has a bar downstairs and a smoking room upstairs which resembles a Victorian Gentlemans Club. It's the only place in on the property where indoor smoking is permitted. Being an ocassional cigar smoker I found this rather attractive. Smoking has become anti-social, however this option is availble without offending people who do not smoke.
The quality of food and service served in the Old Manor House should be experienced.
My impression of this property is that it is really for mature visitors, not for young children, although I am sure they would be more than welcomed.
I stayed in one of the standard rooms located on the ground floor overlooking the well kept gardens. If I were to make a constructive critical comment it would only be that the rooms are painted in a white paint, with white sheets and therefore rather 'clinical', I made this comment on the hotel questionaire. There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms which I'm sure many visitors like to see. That being said, I'm sure anyone staying at the Quinta da Bela Vista will return home feeling being treated like a V.I.P.
If required, the hotel will send transport to collect their guests from the airport (€30 - each way). I intend to return sometime later this year.

As others we were lured by the excellent reports of the hotel. We visited in January when it was exceptionally quiet perhaps only 10/15% occupancy. We had a premier room costing over 2000 euros for the week (not bragging but putting things into context!).

The room was large but unexceptional. It was at the far end of a string of 4 buildings. We were on the 2nd floor with no view of Funchal and overlooking a dull piece of grass. There was an initial bottle of water in the room but this was not replaced. No other drinks facilities were available. Is it too much to have a bottle of water each day!!

Bed turn down including a change of towels wasdone but mid afternoon!!!! So showering before dinner produced damp towels for the next day. Cleaning of the room was done when we were at breakfast but they were often still there when we returned and were told to go away until they had finished!!!!

Breakfasts and lunch were taken in the Aust Navios room - bright and overlooking the garden. The b/fasts were OK the service very average. When we complained about the coffee one day (it was normally good) we were told a replacement would not be any different!!

We ate lunch there and there was meat in the vegetarian pasta. We were told this was normal!!. We dined in the Casa Mae once. It was excellent but expensive.

The best place in our view was the pool side snack bar and bar. Upstairs it had an old colonial feel and fine views of Funchal. The lady who worked there mostly was charming.

A previous person mentioned extras and they are totally right. We walked down to town in the rain one evening and asked to borrow 2 umbrellas. We were made to sign an invoice for 30 euros which was charged to our room albeit reversed the following day.

The location was not great especially with the lack of views and the first part of the walk down - about 20/25 minutes to central Funchal was not that attractive. Wouldn't recommend walking back at night - taxis 5/10 euros.

We booked direct with the hotel. I suggest you look at packages as the ones we saw later represented better value which is a bit surprising.

This was our 10th visit to Funchal and our first to this hotel. We won't be returning.

I picked this hotel because, at the time, it had 100% positive comments, which is unusual here. It certainly lived up to and, indeed, exceeded, expectations. We had two rooms, a standard twin with a small balcony for single occupation and a larger deluxe twin with a large balcony. In contrast to the experience of one recent reviewer, both rooms were immaculately maintained. All of the public areas. furnished with high quality antiques, were beautiful.

Despite there being few guests, all the facilities were operating. We had a light lunch on the terrace by the pool and nightcaps in the delightful upstairs lounge of the pool bar, both of which have fine views over the city. We didn't try the dinner in the table d'hote restaurant but the Old House a la carte restaurant is very good. The weather being chilly, most of the public rooms had blazing log fires.

The hotel's setting, in beautiful gardens, is incredibly peaceful and the service was universally excellent - much more friendly than one normally gets at hotels of this standard. My only reservation - and it's very much a personal one - concerns the location. I always prefer to be within walking distance of a city centre but this certainly isn't. However, none of the good hotels in Funchal are that close to the centre, either. The hotel provides a shuttle bus to and from the centre, but only during the day and not on Saturday afternoons or Sundays, so anyone staying for a long weekend, as we were, can expect to have to use taxis a fair bit. Fortunately, these are numerous and friendly - the fare to city centre is around 6 Euros.

Finally, to absorb the local culture, I can recommend a visit to the large supermarket around the corner, which sells everything you can imagine!
