The best Hotel in Madeira
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jun 25, 2017
The service we received at all levels of hotel staff was excellent, with every member of the staff both efficient and friendly. The room was very good and well maintained but unfortunately overlooked a corner of the park where local noisey gamblers argued for hours. Very colourful but very annoying at times. Funchal is a great resort with every activity and amenity that anyone could desire. At this hotel you are guaranteed a great holiday experience

Upon our arrival there were staff at the entrance and although I was struggling with my case trying to open the door there was no attempt to assist or welcome us. Checking in was straight forward and this hotel is well located with good size rooms. The breakfast was plentiful in nice surroundings as we chose to sit outside. There wasn't a friendly atmosphere amongst the residents and the evenings in the bar area were dire. The communal toilets were slow to be cleaned and there were bins overflowing with tissues. I ordered cake and coffee at the pool snack bar but was told I couldn't take the cake to my sunbed. Overall a disappointing experience at this hotel.

Room tip: We had a side view room, nice and quiet.

We booked in here at fairly short notice and were absolutely delighted with what we found. It is perfect for a B&B stay as there are almost too many places to eat right outside the gates, plus a lovely little Spa supermarket to buy odds and ends for lunch. The main undercover market is also only a short walk away, with a shopping centre including a large supermarket just across the road from that. The old town itself is delightful and we loved the walls and doors decorated with street art painting.

The staff at Porto Santa Maria were friendly and helpful and the place was clean and tidy. There was an excellent range for breakfasts, with a few variations from one day to the next. We ate in the restaurant on the last evening for their Gourmet Dinner and were pleased with that too. My wife took up the neck and shoulders massage offer and was very pleased with the excellent quality and value of what she received.

There were plenty of sunbeds, two smallish pools and one Jacuzzi, but not that many people seemed to use them. We appreciated the ‘adults only’ policy. Although the beach is just across the promenade, I doubt any hotel guests swam in the sea as the beach is very stony and flanked with sea defence concrete blocks.

We’d splashed out a bit and booked a Junior Suite. The double balcony of the one we were allocated looked out over the staff car park and had only a very limited view of the sea. A balcony to sit out on is important to us so after negotiation with the reception, we moved to one with a much better view. Both were very spacious.

Several of the rooms are held by time-share owners. The only evidence of this is the offer of a free drink and opportunity to see a new complex nearby where there are time-share places for sale in return for a 50 Euro voucher. We didn’t bother.

Room tip: Second or one of the few third floor rooms give better views

There were six of us that stayed in this hotel for a week, the reception staff were very miserable but apart from that we had no complaints, the rooms were very good, breakfast was very good and the staff waiting were also very good too, we had read on trip advisor before we went and they did say that there were quite a few of elderly people staying there which we agreed with. Do not let this stop anyone from considering to stay

I've stressed in previous reviews what a splendid hotel this is and in a perfect location. Unfortunately, the second week of our vacation was somewhat spoilt by my wife's illness requiring a visit by a doctor. However, the hotel arranged a visit by a very local doctor who identified the cause, prescribed appropriate medicines, and personally wrote a two week dietary routine for her.
Lina, Guest Relations Manager, together with Reception Staff were excellent in our hour of need, and I express my very sincere thanks for their help.
One final word of thanks to the masseuses who provided marvellous manipulation of my back muscles - it really was a excellent facility operated by charming ladies.

Room tip: Most rooms above ground floor have ocean views and those that don't have views over the adjacent green park.

Stopped for 2 nights as pert of a walking tour (self booked this hotel as the alternative was full). Really glad we did as the location was lovely with a big room, sea view and lovely Captain's bar with Happy Hour (and a half). Cocktail with full measures and ALL the trimmings swords fruit umbrella PLUS a REAL flower. The bar with balcony was a great place to discuss options for the evening and where to go in Funchal for our day in town. Despite the appearance of a complex/large hotel, the place was friendly and staff helpful.

Room tip: Sea view. Some who booked a garden view overlooked the municipal park where locals kip.
