Our first visit to this lovely Island how we wished it had been for two weeks.

The hotel was perfect lovely staff couldn't fault anything. There is some building work going on along the promanade but the hotel paid us 10 euro's a day each so a few beers or a nice lunch by the pool more than compensated for the odd rumble from a digger and crane.

The cable car to Monte was brilliant also the trip to see the Dolphins ( we saw two different sorts ) wonderful they swim right alongside the boat. The old part of Funchal is very quirky lots of art gallery's wonderful restaurants. Some nice bars playing jazz and the Portuguese folk music.

Can't wait to go back

Room Tip: We had a garden room on the ground floor so easy to get to the pool and breakfast !

great hotel!! but the building work on the harbour was terrible, (8am till 6pm ) noise was unbelievable, the council emptying the bottles from the bins in the middle of the night from the entrance of the hotel again unbelievable...what a racket! no sleep if you end up in a room on this side of the hotel. It is such a shame as the staff and hotel is first class !!

a very lovely hotel, with hard working and friendly staff that attend to your every needs.my sea view was spoilt by a crane and other plant machinery, also chilling time was very noisy 8am till 6pm by work been done on the beach.beware of booking on the internet without reading the hidden small print about the building work because it is very loud and noisy, thomas cook are not very helpful if you make the wrong decision you cannot change your mind without paying extra or lose your deposit.will return to lovely hotel when building work has been completed.

This was our first visit to Madeira and certainly won't be our last. It's a beautiful island and the people are so eager to welcome you and do everything they can to make your holiday a beautiful experience. We stayed in the old part of Funchal which remains unspoilt - lots of restaurants and cafe's between the cobbled streets. The cable car to The Palace Gardens, The Botanical Gardens and Monte is nearby and well worth a trip. Currently sea defence work is being carried out along the seafront and once this is completed this area will be fantastic to walk along from one end of the bay to the other. We stayed at The Porto Bay Santa Maria Hotel; not the first time we've stayed with this hotel group and once again we were not disappointed. The standard of accommodation and the care and consideration shown to guests is second to none. By staying in June we were lucky to see the fantastic firework display that takes place every Saturday in this month; prior to this we enjoyed the hotel barbecue which was good value for money. Due to the afore mentioned sea defence work the hotel compensated all guests with 10 euros per day - a more than generous offer as we failed to find the work intrusive, in fact it was interesting to watch and heartening to know that the are was going to be better protected following the horrendous floods and mud slides which took place a couple of years ago. Lina the customer relations manager makes everyone feel welcome without being intrusive and is on hand to advise and inform. While we were staying Lina had a trainee called Carolina who was learning the trade quickly and doing a good job. The pinnacle of all restaurants must surely be The Fort - You must book to reserve a table as it is so popular; this is probably worth doing on arrival to avoid disappointment. The hotel entertainment was good and changed each evening also providing the opportunity for people to dance if they wished. Breakfasts were relaxed, you could eat in or out and there was a wide variety of cooked and uncooked food - fruit, cereals, different breads and pastries etc. We went on at our of the West of the island which was great to see with some fantastic scenery and dramatic mountain passes; a lunch was included and was good value for money - three courses with wine and coffee. For those who enjoy walking there are lots of Levada walks all well signed and with good pathways. A lovely hotel in an ideal location - we will be back!!!

It's the attention to detail that sets this hotel apart from many others we have stayed in. The room was comfortable and well thought out - the little kitchenette meant that we could store picnic things, wine etc in a large, ice-producing fridge. Simple cooking facilities were also provided plus a corkscrew (not that we used the former!) The staff were outstanding throughout the hotel - nothing was too much trouble - and the breakfast buffet was extensive and generous, (even if waiting at the allocated table for a jug of coffee to be carried 10ft was a bit of an unnecessary charade.) Excellent location for numerous good restaurants, though we made a point of not rewarding the ones who over-heckled you for custom. The cable car and bus station are a couple of minutes walk away. I would highly recommend a sea view room.

The €10 pppd credit for the promenade works outside was very generous. The noise did not bother us much; in fact we found it quite interesting to watch the progress. We saved up our credit and spent it on a free dinner in the Michelin starred restaurant at the sister hotel, Porto Cliff Bay which more than made up for any disturbance.

The hotel gardens are also beautifully manicured, with the plant names labelled for your interest. Someone really cares about this hotel; I believe it is one of several owned by the Blandy family (of Madeira wine fame).

I have already recommended this hotel to friends and would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Choose a sea view room; if you were at the side overlooking the 'park' you could be disturbe...

I chose this hotel for the honeymoon based on trip advisor score and the fact that the minimum age was 16 years. No small children makes for a peaceful holiday. However, little did I know at the time of booking, that there would be major harbor works right outside the hotel window. So it was by far not as peaceful as I would have wished. The noise level grew from moderate to high during the two-week stay. There was a compensation consisting of ten euros credit per person per day, which was generous. Covered our evening bar bill more than well enough.

The location in the Funchal's old town was perfect. The rest of the city center was a ten-minute walk away. There are plenty of lovely restaurants just around the corner from the hotel, meaning we could eat at a different restaurant every night (not that we did that) and still have just a two-minute walk to return the hotel.

As for the hotel itself and aside from the noise, everything was perfectly acceptable. The reception area, bar and reading room were very nice. I read a book from the "captain's library" and left two of my own. The breakfast was surprisingly good and very varied. The staff were all very friendly and professional. It's highly likely I'll choose the same hotel when I return, which is undoubtedly sufficently far into the future for the harbor works to have been completed.

Room Tip: While the harbor works are on-going, skip the sea view. The rooms facing the park are quiter.

A marvellus gem, situated in the heart of Funchal, with a great view over the sea and harbour.
Very friendly and serviceminded personel, accelent housekeeping and cleaning.
The work on the seafront Washington not annoying at all, and we are looping forward to return to see the result.

Room Tip: Room 117, 217 ( or nearby) provides view over both sea and harbor
