My husband and I have just returned from a week at the Porto Santa Maria Hotel in Funchal. It is a wonderful hotel right on the prom facing the harbour. Okay at the moment there are works going on on the Prom however, we sat by our pool every day and we were not annoyed or even noticed any noise. The view was not spoiled either by the work you look out beyond that out to sea it was lovely.

The hotel itself was fantastic a genuine 4 star hotel. Our room was very spacious with very comfortable beds, plenty of storage space and the bathroom was large and spacious as well. The little kitchen containing a sink, hob and fridge with kettle was great as I like my morning and evening cuppa on the balcony. Can I say it is worth the little cost for an upgrade to be guaranteed a full sea view.

The breakfast was wonderful and as in all good 4 star hotels every need of the guest is catered for taste wise I defy anyone to say they could not find something they liked to eat. Only comment I would say is the Alpro Soya milk was not on display and we had to ask for it every morning. The hotel also offered little jugs of fresh milk in the morning if you wished to take one (free) to your room . Tea and coffee is not supplied as part of the room facilities however we always take our own but getting that little jug of fresh milk daily is a nice touch.

The hotel Pool Bar has great food on offer and it is displayed as if you were in a fancy restaurant and not a Poolside bar. We enjoyed all the lunches we had there and it was not expensive at all.

We like to eat in local restaurants so were only B & B however on the Saturday night the hotel had a BBQ instead of the normal evening buffet meals so we decided to book in for that. It was a GREAT night the staff were wonderful making it all extra enjoyable for the guests. The food was fantastic with lamb, port kebabs, steak, chicken and all the fancy starters and salads, sweets and ice creams and with the chefs on show cooking it was a good night. The little band they had played great music just our style all the music from the late l950s to the early 1970s with any other popular music by request. All the guests and staff were dancing - it was one of those good nights you remember for ages. The next morning at breakfast everyone was chatting about the BBQ with guests telling the staff how good it was and it they were not there they should go next week. At 10.30 p.m. after the BBQ we were all taken up to the roof of the hotel to see the fireworks over the harbour there was free champagne and canapes courtesy of the hotel it was a lovely end to a great evening. We would have been able to have the same view from our balcony but not the same atmosphere with the company of the other guests and staff.

The maid attending to us - we were in room 124 - was really nice and cheery, very helpful and really really nice she was just great fun and her English was good. She is the best maid we have had and we have stayed in some really good 4 and 5 star hotels all around the world.

All in all we had a great holiday and I would recommend the Porto Santa Maria to anyone for a holiday.

Well done to all the staff you were great.

This was our fifth stay at this wonderful hotel in wonderful Madeira, it's also in a great location, the staff are nice, friendly and helpful, it's such a relaxing place to stay, its hard to find the right words to say to do this hotel justice but as someone else it has said the ambience, there is a lot of work going on along the prom and around the town centre but that shouldn't put you off, we can't wait to go back next year, last year we had a break and went to lake garda and it is not a patch on this wonderful Island and hotel all the time we were there we wished we were back at the Porto Santa Maria

Room Tip: Front garden view rooms are nice and also front sea view rooms are lovely as you can watch the cruis...

My first visit to Madeira and I cannot praise this Hotel enough. Comfortable, Clean, Quiet, Friendly, and the comfiest Hotel beds I have ever slept in.
We had a sea view room and had no problems with the building work on the front, I don't think there was a room nearer the work than ours , they do start at 7am but they don't appear to work weekends, and the noise did not spoil our holiday one bit.
We arrived on the day the airport closed due to poor visibility, and were diverted to Porto Santo but the following day the weather improved and we had seven days of blue skies and sunshine.
We did the Island tours and these were very well conducted, our guide was extremely well informed and provided us with a very enjoyable outing.
We also visited the time share offered by the Hotel and this was a lovely experience, don't be put off by other peoples past experiences in other countries, there is absolutely no pressure to buy and the complex is very nice, I was very tempted.
I will go back to this Hotel in a couple of years and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: We had a sea view and it was worth the extra few bob. But all the rooms are excellent, you can hear...

Just returned from our 3rd visit to this hotel because when you want a relaxing holiday with lovely people, lovely food, great comfort and stunning views The Hotel Porto Santa Maria has it all and more. We were warned in advance of the ongoing construction work directly outside the hotel, the noise was hardly noticeable and it was interesting to watch the changes taking place. We felt that the 140 euros compensation was more than adequate to cover the inconvenience. As ever, the reception staff were pleasant and helpful, allowing us a complimentary buffet lunch when our room was not ready on arrival. All the staff at the hotel go out of their way to assist and Lina in charge of Guest Relations greets returning customers as friends with hugs. This year she had 2 trainees, Carolina and Goao, who could easily step up to the job in her absence as they were so friendly and helpful. On checking out, I would love to have booked to go back again next year, but sadly this was not possible, but as soon as I am able we will return for a 4th visit - and hopefully a 5th and 6th

Room Tip: In spite of the works, book a sea view room

Having been here several times before, we knew we would be able to have a relaxing holiday away, which is just what we wanted, following a stressful year. despite the building work going on outside the hotel this did not spoil our time there and we plan to go back again. The food was great and the staff were as helpful as ever. the only downside was the weather, only one sunny day all week, but still got a tan.even the locals were praying for summer to start! Special mention to Lena who greeted all guests like old friends and made sure everything was ok.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms have the best views

We needed a week away to relax and you can certainly do it here in some style. There is some remedial work going on along the shore at the front of the hotel which we were warned about before we went but apart from a bit if noise it was fine it wasnt dusty or dirty. It is the cleanest hotel I have ever stayed in and I've stayed in some great hotels. Even outside you will never see a dead leaf lying around! The staff are all lovely and extremely courteous. The bed was more comfortable than mine at home! The location is amazing amongst lots of local eateries and bars which serve some lovely local food (especially the Flambed prawn curry at Le Jardin.

Room Tip: Don't be swayed by the sea view rooms - the ones at the side with garden view are fine

The best hotel we have ever stayed in, service, ambience and food all excellent. God willing we will return next year. We even found the work on the sea front interesting rather than annoying and the 10 euros compensation per day certainly helped with the food and the bar bill. Great holiday, we will return!
