Porto Santa Maria Hotel
Ranked #11 of 88 Hotels in Funchal
Certificate of Excellence

The location of this hotel is definitely an advantage if you like to stroll the city of Funchal. It is at the border of the old town, next to the sea, quiet but central. During the day indeed (a lot of) noise from the constructions, but if you don't plan to sit at the pool or in your room all day it doesn't bother that much. Works start around 8am and end around 6pm. Hotel management is making a big effort in offering 10 euro "budget" per person per day. And if you want to relax next to a swimming pool, you can take the courtesy bus to the "Porto Mare" hotel, with a big swimming pool in very quiet surroundings. At Porto Santa Maria rooms are nice and clean, good sea view (if you book for that), friendly staff, good breakfast buffet. We only had 1 dinner in the hotel (which was also fine), as there are so many nice restaurants in the neighbourhood. Do be aware for "tourist traps" when you eat out. Underground parking available for rental cars. Definitely a hotel that we would consider booking again ...

Upon arrival at this hotel last week, we were met with the most awful building noises. Two huge cranes, diggers, tipper lorries and drilling. These were next to (butting up to) the wall of the hotel. They are reclaiming land from the sea to make the harbour bigger and to make the area more attractive. The hotel were offering 10 euros per head per day as compensation for the noise. We had no idea these works were taking place. It seems that page 5 of our printed out paperwork mentioned this in the very tiny small-print. When we were booking this holiday we looked at many different web sites, and didn't pick up this piece of information.

The staff couldn't have been more charming and helpful, and moved us to their sister hotel (Porto Mare) where we had a fabulous holiday. We think the construction work adjacent to the Porto Santa Maria will continue for at least another 12 months, so please keep it in mind if you're considering a stay there.

My partner and I had a weeks stay to recharge our batteries. This was our third time at the hotel and we were delighted to find that there few changes and those changes were improvements. Like the previous review, we too had a junior suite. This was well worth the extra cost as we had more room and it was a little above the noise of the improvement to the sea defenses. The flower festival was on at the time, and, if you are into flowers, it's a great time to visit Funchal.
If you do stay at the hotel, then it is worth trying the Tapassol Restaurant, just outside the hotel for a great relaxed meal.

Room Tip: The rooms with a sea view are well worth the extra cost. You can sit on your balcony and watch the...

Just had 4 days at this hotel. We were welcomed back by friendly staff. Had a junior suite which had good views over the harbour. We were warned about all the construction work going on in front of the hotel but this did not bother us at all, in fact we enjoyed watching all the work going on! As usual the food was very good and varied.
We would have liked Wi-Fi in the rooms, but the manager assured us that his hotel was next on the list to have this carried out.

We enjoyed our first visit so much last year we booked again. We knew about the ongoing construction work, but although it was noisy at times, it didn't cause any major disturbance. My husband quite enjoyed his twice daily walk to view their progress. The hotel's generous 20 euro daily credit helped us to enjoy snacks on the terrace and cocktails in the Captain's bar every evening.
The hotel is very clean and service excellent. Special mention to the Restaurant Manageress, Lina (think that was her name). She greeted guests like long lost friends and couldn't do enough for us. We especially enjoyed our Thursday evening meal which varied from the buffet service to silver service at the table.
Thank you also for putting us in room 61 as we requested.
We shall be returning for a third time - definitely!

We had an excellent week at the Porto Santo Maria - all the reviews on this site are true. It was ideal for my Mum who being over 80 finds walking difficult at times. It really is an ideal location on the flat (there is not much of that in Madeira!) and being so close to many very good restaurants and the old town of Funchal. The only downside was the cloudy weather and a bit of late night noise on the Friday overlooking the Town Garden. We had B&B and were able to sample many different restaurants each evening. The breakfast at Porto Santo was very good. We will visit again and recommend to friends.

Stayed for a week. Hotel immaculate. Staff were all great.
Delicious breakfast and evening meal.
On our special day we came back to flowers and sparkling wine from hotel. Lovely touch.....and of course the singing at the dinner table!!!
Thomas Cook had prepared us for the noise at front, however it certainly didn't spoil our holiday.
