We stayed at the above hotel last October, were given an upgrade of a junior suite, with two separate terraces, one from lounge/one from bedroom. Views were wonderful. The staff wonderful, especially Maria the Receptionist. The food was excellent, just could not fault anything at all. We would definiately stay at this hotel again, and again.

This was our first stay in Madeira having called in there last year on a cruise ship. We decided there and then we would like to return and, if possible, stay in the old town. We were certainly pleased with our choice of both hotel and location. We decided to book B&B to enable us to try out some of the local restaurants close-by but in the end enjoyed a mixture of eating out and in and were not disappointed with the quality of the food and service. Although we had requested an upper floor room we were allocated a garden room on the ground floor but this also had a side sea view and overlooked the immaculate gardens with a gate opening on to the gardens from our patio. The public rooms and our accommodation were kept very clean and the decor was restfull and uncluttered. We found all the staff helpful and there was always a warm welcome in the dining room and the bar. The Porto Santa Maria is very close to the cable car and buses, the latter we used on several occasions and found them very good value for money, particularly if we bought a day ticket. We were there the first week in May so was able to watch the May Day parade which passed by the hotel as it wound its way around the town and back up to the church behind the fort. All in all it was a lovely week and we would certainly recommend it to friends, and hopefully return again one day.

We stayed 11 nights in this really beautiful hotel? We booked a sea view studio in BB, airport transportation and 5 dinner tickets - who turned out to be buffet tickets.
The room was very spacious and was equipped with a small kitchenette. The view from our terrace on the harbour of Funchal was very nice. The location of the hotel in the old town and close to various restaurants is an advantage.
The breakfast buffet was very good with a wide choise of cold and hot dishes.
The evening buffet was an other story. The cold platters were good, but the hot dishes were overcooked and were very poor in taste. We will certainly come back to the hotel, but it will be room and breakfast. No more buffet for us

Room Tip: Rooms next to the park (right side of the hotel) may be noisy

We booked a standard room with a sea view and we were not disappointed and for the first 2 days we watched 3 german war ships in the harbour. This hotel is elegant and luxurious in every way, every detail has been thought of, staff are so thorough with the cleaning yet remain discreet. We watched some great live music in the bar at night. It was so close to the restaurants in the old town and also the square where we watched locals dance and sing in a lovely relaxed informal way. The island itself is stunning I totally recommend http://www.funchal-airport-transfers.net/ for their efficient taxi service and reasonably priced excursions. I totally recommend the day trip to the west coast. The cable is so close to the hotel and if you go the botanical gardens when you get to the top and you get to go on a second cable car. Stunning. Book this hotel, it's sheer opulence, we loved it and will be back.

This hotel could not be in a better location in my opinion, very close to the buses to get you round the island, very close to great restaurants, very close to cable car, close to the marina and boat trips. Situated in the old Town, I felt this was a better location than the hotel area. The hotel is really clean in all areas, in particular the outside area and the staff with the exception of one man at breakfast were helpful and always spoke. We sometimes ate dinner in the hotel and sometimes in the restaurants in the old town. Breakfasts offered a very good variety, only boiled eggs were always hard and it would be better to have these cooked on request. We mostly ate breakfast at 8.30 and it appeared that by this time the food was only luke warm, however on the last day we ate at 9.00 and the experience was a good fresh hot breakfast. The hotel was busy but we managed to get a table outside every day. I think if overall the food was better, this hotel could command an extra star. The toasted cheese/ham sandwiches with coleslaw from the outside bar were overpriced and neither the sandwich nor the coleslaw was good. Evening meals were ok, but again depending on the time you ate the food was lukewarm and the desserts soon looked a mess. One evening at 8.15 a prawn starter had run out and I asked for more and was told there was no more. When the restaurant is open 7 - 10pm this was poor. A little more attention is needed on the buffet to check if items were running out and tidying up during service.

The room with a seaview was excellent. The prices in the bar were ok although the cocktails in happy hour were disappointing - we tried three and none were as good as experienced in other hotels.

I have given this hotel an excellent rating as whilst I was underwhelmed with the food, I know this is subjective and as there is a very good variety of food within easy reach of the hotel for me this did not detract from the hotel.

We slept with our verandah door open and one night there was significant noise at 3:30 am which was quite intrusive, we only left the door a little open after that and were not disturbed again.

Room Tip: Seaview is wonderful to sit on the balcony and people watch and benefit from the sun.

It was our first visit to Funchal and we chose our hotel carefully - thanks to Tripadvisor! It was brilliant - in every way. We cannot actualy think of anything we did not enjoy about our stay here. We did take the precaution of upgrading to a junior suite, which was a great luxory; very spacious and with two balconies and a good view of the harbour and cruise ships.

The position of this hotel is perfect. Sea on one side and a stroll along the prom and straight into the old town and the great restaurants from the other - that couldn't have been better.

Breakfasts and the other meals we had were all excellent - we could go the whole day on the breakfast alone! Perhaps most of all was the professionalism, friendliness and helpfulness of all the staff. Without exception they were wonderful. I want to say a special thank you to Andre (we think) on reception for his help and support. Unfortunately we forgot to give him a tip in the rush to catch our bus to the airport, but he does deserve a very special mention.

Room Tip: Definitely worth the upgrade and checking that you have a sea view.

Just returned from a weeks holiday at the Porto Santa Maria. The hotel itself is in a good position and has beautiful decor and is clean and spotless. The rooms are a nice size and the small kitchenette very useful. The hotel gardens were kept beautifully and the roof terrace very relaxing, also the sun loungers on the roof terrace were much more comfortable than those around the pool. I thought the restaurant staff were a little on the slow side. The breakfasts were good and a nice variety to suit all tastes. Unfortunately we booked half board and we found the evening meals very disappointing, the food was not particularly hot and also a lot of the dishes were not labelled, so it was sometimes difficult to know what exactly was on the starter platters or the dessert platters. There was a menu outside of the restuarant but once inside it was a case of lucky dip. I did bring this to the attention on the second day to one of the Restuarant Manageress but it was the same when we left. I had a white dessert one evening which was unlabelled and I could not taste anything so was unable to say exactly what it was.
WeI also felt the themed evenings were not suitable as on the fish night, everything was fish even the soup, with only one different choice of turkey - so if you did not like fish, turkey was the only option. I think the menu needs to be carefully looked at so that it caters for all tastes. Also the presentation of the food in the lidded tureens, hotelier please note people eat with their eyes first so a row of stainless steel tureens was not at all inspiring. I would visit the hotel again but would fefinately only book bed and breakfast

Room Tip: We had a garden room which was very nice and quiet and did have a sort of side sea view.
