“What a find!”

A total chill out location, with the perfect view. The staff are excellent (nothing appears to be too much trouble) and it's within easy walking distance of the centre of Funchal, as the main cable car to Monte. It's also right in the heart of the old town - the restaurant zone is within 20 yards of the hotel gate.

The rooms are spacious, with a small kitchen area (which is well equipped) and the little 'fridge proves more than useful for keeping soft drinks cold. The room that Mum and I had (think it was room 104) had a really good view of the harbour, making photographing the incomming cruise liners really easy.

All in all, a really good hotel, and one that I really look forward to going back to.

Room Tip: Aim for a sea view room at the back of the hotel - preferably one that overlooks the harbour.

This was our first time in Madeira and we picked a hotel close to the old town rather than the lido. The hotel is first class, extremely well run and in tip top condition. Room are spacious and our room (313 a junior suite) had a fantastic view of the harbour. It was lovely to open the curtains in the morning and be greeted by the sight of a cruise ship doing a pirouette before reversing into dock.
Our only disappointment was the dining experience. Being in the old town and having numerous restaurants close at hand there were only a few people eating in the restaurant in the evening. The food was excellent, especially the starters and desserts but the all round dining experience was sploiled by the lack of atmosphere due to the restaurant being virtually empty. You should note that the half board option only entitles you to buffet meals. The a la carte menu is at extra cost.
The Indoor pool is excellent and I can recommend the roof top terrace which overlooks the fortress from one side and the harbour from the other.
The Captains bar is also excellent and we were able to work our way through the cocktails menu at very little expense thanks to happy hour (6-8 pm). The waiters went out of their way to be please.
We were rather disappointed with Funchal as a holiday destination. The shops were mainly "low end" and the streets were a little neglected. This may have been the time of year of the after effects of the floods last year? It was our first time so we don't know.
We took a courtesy bus to the sister hotels on the Lido. This is more of a tourist resort and still not far from the centre of Funchal, if we return we will probably try here next time.
The highlight of the holiday was the cable car trip to Monte and the Monte Palace Gardens. The cable car does a combined return ticket and entry to the gardens for about 24 Euros each, expensive but well worth the money. We spent about 4 hours in the gardens and another hout at the Church watching the Toboggans start their descent. Hair raising and very expensive at 30 Euros a couple and it doesn't even get you all the way down!
All in all a really good holiday which was made better by staying at the Santa Maria

Room Tip: Email hotel before you go and ask for full sea view room. We had a junior suite room 313 on third fl...

Stayed for a relaxing week with daughter who expects her first baby in Feb All reviews are accurate re standard of cleanliness and excellent location of this hotel. One point- we would have welcomed some in- house information about the hotel and local facilities. Eg didn't discover the sun terrace until 5 days into our holiday. Some staff were fantastic especially in the restaurant others less so [the bar]
Photos on web site don't do the hotel justice lovely foyer and garden area

Room Tip: Beware of some seaview rooms with tiny balconies and narrow view of sea due to design of buildings

We have just returned from a 7 night stay at this hotel and we would highly recommend it. We had a sea view room which was large and comfortable and very clean, The little kitchen area was well equipped and the fridge was very handy. THe room had a large and sunny balcony and we spent most of our time sunning ourselves here rather than at the pool. Having said this, the pool area was quiet and sunbeds were always available. There is a gorgeous roof terrace too with fabulous views over the bay and lovely hammocks, sunbeds and bean bags to relax on.

The atmosphere in the hotel is calm and efficient and the staff were always quick and helpful. The restaurant provided a wonderful breakfast with a wide choice of hot and cold food, juices and even sparkling wine. We had lunch a couple of times at the pool bar and this was also very good.

The location of the hotel is also fabulous. It is right on the sea front and in the heart if the old town. It is right next to the cable car and near the bus stops for the open top tour buses and less than a ten minute walk from the market and the centre of the main town. Right beside the hotel there is a large number of restaurants and they are all very good. We particularly liked Resaturante Mozart and Donna Maria in Rua Santa Maria and, for a lovely, romantic experience, the Restaurant do Forte which is located in the 17 th century fortress next to the hotel is a must and it is best to book , especially if you want one of the cute tables for two by the battlements of the fortress.

Funchal is not the place for a wild holiday but it is the place for a lovely, relaxing, stress free, lazy holiday and the Porto Santa Maria hotel is the ideal place from which to enjoy it. We will definately be back soon.

Room Tip: paying the extra for a sea view is well worth it

Can really only repeat what the other positive review have said. We loved our room - at first was disappointed to be on the ground floor next to the pool area, as the sea view seemed less dramatic than it would be higher up, but actually the views were great, fascinating watching the cruise ships, and nice to be able to get to the pool by walking from the balcony outside. The hotel was fairly quiet, so there were never a lot of people outside our window. In busy season it might feel a bit intrusive,

Staff were all friendly, the whole place was spotless, indoor pool was great for some proper swimming, and was almost always empty when I used it. Breakfasts were good, we had one bar snack meal, also good and no more expensive than eating in a restaurant.

Best thing is the location. Personally, once we'd been up to see the main hotel area, we were delighted to be in old town Funchal. And there's plenty to explore - loads of restaurants nearby but we also ate a few times in the centre of town.

We found Madeira quite sedate, but a good place for some stress-free November sunshine. Recommend hiring a car and pottering around - we drove up to the North West, then along the whole North coast and back round to Funchal by the East coast.

We booked this hotel on the recommendation of relatives who had visited earlier in the year and were not disappointed.

Transfer from the airport is quick and efficient, as was check-in at the hotel. Our room however was a "garden view" and overlooked the side of the hotel towards the public park and cable car. This was noisy at night, and we were woken several times in the early hours by passers by in the park. From my observation, the rooms that would be affected by this are 150 to 157 and 250-257. Other than that, the room was spacious and comfortable. There was a small but well equipped kitchenette with fridge. My only comment on this was that there was no tea or coffee provided, which might be a nice touch and would usually be expected in most hotels. The rooms were kept to a high standard.

The buffet breakfast was excellent; an amazing variety of foods available and all of very good quality. Other than this, we did not eat in the hotel so cannot comment on other meals. The happy hour in the Captains bar is good, with several cocktails available; all very good.

We used the roof terrace mostly for quiet reading and relaxation. This is beautifully set out with hammocks, sun loungers and bean bags and a stunning view across Funchal harbour.

The gym was small, though adequate, with good equipment. Both indoor and outdoor pools and jacuzzi were good, although we only actually used the indoor pool and jacuzzi on a few occasions. There are saunas in the male and female changing rooms, but these were never switched on. We were unable to find anyone in the leisure centre reception until our last day, when we discovered that the sauna needs to be booked at least two hours in advance and costs 4 euros. It might have been useful if there were a notice up informing guests of this. There is also a spa offering massages and beauty treatments, though this seemed quite pricey.

We used several of the restaurants just outside the hotel. Our favourite was Estrela do Mar, where the food was excellent.

The hotel is positioned in the old town of Funchal, and a short walk to the cable car, cathedral, farmers market, Blandy's and the marina. As stated in previous reviews, the hotel is on the seafront with a long straight promenade just outside.

Overall, an excellent holiday, and if we visited Madeira again, we would definitely return to the Porto Santa Maria.

Room Tip: Avoid the side view rooms (150-157 and 250-257) as these can be quite noisy at night.

Great hotel situated on sea front with a long flat promenade....good for the less mobile as other parts in Funchal are quite hilly. Rooms kept to high standard..we had studio sea view room on 3rd floor with 2 balconies to enjoy views of the harbour...worth paying extra for. Great food with plenty of choice and tables outside making most of views. Relaxing pool area to chill out. Close by cable cars, buses and boats to explore the island. Plenty of bars and cafes in the back streets. Hope to return soon!
