An absolutely breathtaking Hotel and scenic capital city. Great room. Food was excellent and the wine list extensive (but expensive). Funchal is exceptionally clean having been voted the cleanest capital in the EU for 5 years. Buses and taxis are frequent and the gardens very pretty and the people very hospitable and the weather was warm but not too uncomfortable. Would visit for longer next time.

On arrival at the hotel we were checked in promptly, although we never got offered any drinks that were clearly available for newly arriving guests.

The hotel’s public areas are very impressive in appearance. The view from the restaurant is nothing short of stunning, with a clear view over to the harbour where several cruise ships docked during our stay.

When we went to our room which was on the 5th floor at the very end of the hotel, we thought we were going to have something that resembled the rest of the hotel, how wrong we were, we were greeted by a very dark stained wood door which matched the wood in the corridors. When we opened our door it was as if we had been taken back in time to 1973 when the hotel was built. It was the same colour as the corridor, with old dark worn away stained wood furniture. The lampshades were old cream coloured cardboard like material, and one was broken. Basically the room was very dated and tired looking with chipped paint on all the wooden surfaces

When we opened the balcony door we were greeted by lots of traffic noise, which made our mind up that we wanted to change rooms. We decided not to unpack, but went downstairs to reception to ask to be moved. We were greeted by a lady at the Guest Relations Desk, who said that as the hotel was full it was going to be difficult to move us unless we paid an upgrade fee of 40 Euros a day, which we refused to pay. She then said that she would have a look and that we were to go back at midday on the following day to see what she could do.

To cut a long story short they couldn’t move us, so we were stuck with that room for the duration, so we decided to unpack and make the best of it.

Basically in a nutshell, the hotel in fine, food is very good, the position is stunning, the indoor spar pool in nice, but the rooms are NOT 5 star, more like the UK equivalent of 3 star. Apparently they are updating the rooms, but all the rooms we saw seemed to be the same as ours. When we checked out we drew to the attention of the reception desk our feelings, and the lady suggested that if we were to go back next time we should request an updated room.

Overall Madeira is a beautiful island and we will be going back in the future, but not to that hotel, we visited many other hotels while we were there, and they are all better, in our opinion, than The Pestana Casino Park.

Room Tip: Low numbers on each floor

We stayed at the Pestana Casino Hotel, arriving on the 17th October 2013 for a week. On arrival we discovered that our travel agent (Navelar - Clever Hotels) had gone into receivership and had not paid the hotel! We booked through the Trivago search engine and had all the relevant booking forms/confimations of payment/ voucher from Navelar but had no idea that they had gone bust 2 months previously. Do check with your hotel etc before you travel if you have booked anything through Navelar. The Pestana was extremely sympathetic and helpful but of course I had to pay again for our stay. Despite this setback our stay could not have been better at the hotel. We had a lovely room with sea views, the facilities were first class and the location ideal for wandering into Funchal. The staff were aso very friendly, helpful and efficient. the breakfast was also excellent and the views from the gardens across Funchal have to be the best in the resort. We really cannot fault the hotel in any way, it is first class and deserves to do well. This is our 4th visit to Funchal and our first to the Pestana Casino Hotel. We will definately return to the hotel for our next visit.

Room Tip: Cose a room on the Funchal side to experience the sunrise

Had a very good stay here...would go back.
Breakfast was very very good indeed. Bar drinks expensive, but tis is often the case in hotels.
The hotel is 'getting on a bit' but the grounds are lovely with wonderful views of the cruise ships.
Our room was fine, not massive, but not tiny and kept beautifully clean, as was the rest of thehotel, by 'the girls' who were really sweet and pleasant.
Oh and lovely comfy beds!
We found all the staff pleasant actually, yes, there was a bit of a wait in reception, but that is not unusual in any hotel.
Fab position to walk into the centre of Funchal and to the lido area.
Thank you to all at the Casino Park for your hospitality.

This was our second stay at this Hotel, Whilst it is listed as 5 star I think it is looking a bit tired and should really be rated as a good 4 star. Dining room spectacular but watch out for the sun at breakfast. Staff friendly and efficient especially when I tried my basic Portuguese on them. Room clean and serviced daily but avoid the mini bar prices. The Spar supermarket down on the left is far cheaper. Food in dining room buffet style quite good and usually we could find something we liked. The service seemed a bit slower this year. Before, a waiter always showed you to a table. Now, sometimes you have to find your own table and then wait for a waiter to notice you to take your coffee/tea at breakfast or drinks order for dinner. I think think they may have cut down on staff and some of the waiters were on duty from breakfast till late at night. We usually have a garden/town view which is OK but does not get the sun in the afternoon so room is cooler but balcony no good for sun bathing. The down side is that you sometimes get a lot of noise when the Casino chucks out at 3 am. If the balcony door is shut then you don't get the noise but you have to run the air conditioning which some people may find noisy.
Close to town so convienient 10 minute walk. Drinks prices are a bit high, it is almost cheaper to drink beer than water at 4 euros a bottle. To sum up, an adequate quite hotel where we are already looking to book for next year.

Room Tip: Garden side, For, good views across town and harbour but if on lower floors view may be blocked by t...

I stayed here 11 - 18 Oct 13. I was disappointed with the first room they gave me on the 5th Floor which had a broken thermostat and was moved to the 3rd Floor which was much better. The hotel was fabulous and the facilities were fully functional, clean and generally of top quality. Some bits of the hotel are a bit 'tired', but that's to be expected, it has been around for a while. I was only B+B, but the food was abundant, of good quality and satisfied all tastes and dietary needs. The location of the hotel is perfect, with wonderful views across Funchal town and harbour and the Western vistas. I loved the indoor pool area, which has something for everybody (Jacuzzi, Steam Room, Ice Room) whirlpool etc, kids will love it. The varying depths in the pool made it excellent for my own hydrotherapy regime to help get my own personal fitness back too. The staff were very friendly and helpful and were extremely attentive to any requests (e.g. I requested a kettle as there was none in the room). I will definately go there again.

This hotel seemed fine to us with most of the staff being polite and helpful, although check-in was inefficient. The buffet meals were adequate in terms of quality and variety, with an British style breakfast available. A good view from both room and restaurant and the pools were clean and tidy. The location and spaciousness of the hotel were plus points, but the bottled water price a negative. Our room was quiet (575) and my wife received a surprise bottle of bubbly for her birthday and had gluten-free bread or rolls with her breakfast.
