“A fairly large, modern hotel.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2013

We took the bed + breakfast option. It was early evening when we first turned up and we were told that the restaurant would be 25 Euro pp + drinks. I see from other reviews that half-board is hardly more expensive than breakfast only, so go for that option if you want to eat there.
There is a perfectly good selection of restaurants across the bridge on the right and we went for that option instead. Digressing, the best restaurants we tried were one on the corner opposite Pub Number Two and the Indian on the the first floor opposite the tiny supermarket.

Breakfast is a buffet with a decent choice, some cold and some warm.

They have parking space for around 12 cars underneath, Luckily there were only around 10 cars using them during our stay.

When booking the room I decided not to pay extra for the sea view but they put us on that side anyway and - as others have said - it gets a bit loud (traffic). Sleeping with the window open meant a fairly strong wind blowing in throughout the night, we also caught some when someone smoked outside or on their balcony. Occasional Mosquitos, hopefully none were carrying Dengue fever. The a/c is definitely an alternative, very quiet.
There is live music on the ground floor until 22:00 most nights so you might want to avoid the first floor if - for example - you have kids.
We also heard neighbouring rooms rather better than we would have wished.

There are two pools outside, one is in a kind of alcove and you need a bathing cap (provided?) to use that. We saw a fitness room.

The city center is 1.5 - 2km but we walked that a couple of times.

Room Tip: The garden-side will be quieter, maybe second-floor upwards.

We stayed here for a week on a half board package booked through Thomas Cook on a hotel only deal. All the staff we encountered during our stay were very pleasant and extremely helpful, particularly in the restaurant. The cost difference between b&b and hb was minimal so we decided to take dinner in the hotel for some nights of our holiday and eat out if necessary. The quality of the food was generally good although I would agree with previous reviewers that some items were occasionally cold. As well as the menu choices, there was "show cooking" available although it was our third evening before we realised that this was an option. One thing to be aware of is that sometimes the menu displayed at the bottom of the stairs leading to the restaurant is not the same as the food offered in the restaurant.

We had booked a room at the back of the hotel overlooking the Quinta Magnolia park and despite being given a larger room with a sea view we asked to change after one night as we are not accustomed to traffic noise. This might not be a problem for those who live in a town. Both rooms had no bath and despite requesting a room with a bath when we asked to be moved this was not possible. The toiletries provided are dispensers containing soap and shower gel/shampoo. The shower is spacious and water pressure is good but the shower stand is not adjustable so pack a shower cap if you don't want to get your hair wet when taking a shower. As the weather was very warm during our stay we appreciated the effective air conditioning in the bedroom.

BBC Entertainment and BBC News is available as well as a number of other channels with programmes in English with Portuguese subtitles. A useful addition to the room would be a directory with a list of television channels, meal times, spa hours etc.

All areas in the hotel were very clean. As the hotel was not very busy, there were plenty of sun beds and pool towels were provided. Free Wifi is now available throughout the hotel including the bedrooms and the connection was very good. There is also a PC available in the reception area.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2013

I spent10 days in this hotel with my mum in the beginning of October 2013. I booked twin room with the sea view. I booked this hotel because of good price (for a sea view room) and facilities that are important for me (gym and spa).

Firstly the positives:
-Very clean hotel, friendly staff, spacious rooms, Jacuzzi and swimming pool are modern and spotlessly clean. Great breakfast: wide choice of fresh rolls (white, brown, baguettes with olives), wide choice of fruits etc. Tables are not cleaned to early before you decide to finish eating.

Overall good hotel with a few drawbacks:
-The gym is very poorly equipped, what you see in the pictures that's all there is. One treadmill (poor quality, while using it feels like jogging on the sandy beach), a bicycle and cross trainer. The opening hours of this facility are from 10.00-19.00 (the same as spa) to short to even consider using it. Why would you spend a sunny day in a hotel and enjoy a spa or a gym?(You spend most of the day out and about enjoying what the island has to offer: hills, ocean etc...) The gym should be open at least from 7.00 (most people work out before breakfast) and close at least at 21.00. This was a major drawback during my stay. Because of that as well I didn't have a chance to use a spa (which I loved to try) so I cannot comment on that. It has acceptable prices about 60 euros for an hour massage.

-During my stay I had one unexpected maintenance visit in my room, it was somebody checking if the lights in the wardrobe are working. Nothing unusual... but the person who intruded my room did not wait for me to open the doors. Just help themselves and got in to the room. Quite bizarre. I got impression that this lady (presume somebody from the management) didn't expect me to be in the room.

- The coffee machine in the restaurant (close to the window) needs a deep cleaning or has to be changed (the kitchen staff know what I mean as I have seen them trying to get rid of the problem).

-The entertainment program is boring (a guy playing the piano, folk music etc...)but somehow it didn't bother me to much. Good choice of TV programs.

-I didn't use the restaurant in the evening as the meals were 25 euros per person + drinks. Overpriced in my opinion especially when you look at a great choice of places to dine around the hotel.

-The juices served for the breakfast should be 100% natural. Somehow sweet nectars doesn't feel to healthy.

-Air Conditioning needs a serious upgrade. We had it on most of the time as we end up having a spare key to the room. But the room felt stuffy and hot all the time (furthermore we were out of the season time)

Unfortunately next time I visit Madeira I will chose a different hotel. Personally I will spend extra £300 to get a hotel with a direct access to the ocean and good, modern, well equipped gym.

We stayed here a week and had a lovely stay. Hotel was clean and well maintained felt refurbishment worked well. Furniture in room offered a lot of storage which I liked. A good size fridge. There was no kettle for hot drinks. Good shower. Room cleaned daily. We were on third floor with sea view, nice balcony which was sun trap. Did not find road noise that intrusive and certainly didn't bother our sleep. Would say rooms on garden side did not appear to have balcony.
We stayed half board and found the restaurant offered a good service and thoroughly enjoyed wide range of food choice and to a high standard. Breakfast enjoyed the fresh bread with either hot or cold selection. Don't miss the local Madeira area with fresh jams, honey cake and biscuits. For evening meal again good food variety and always plenty and topped up right to the end of service. Different selection of salads each night, with choice of meat and fish dishes for main. Always had to leave enough room for desserts, my favourite been the jelly dessert again a good choice. We never felt the need to eat out.
The public areas were well kept inside and out with good seating areas.
Found it ideally situated between the town and lido area both easy walks. Would happily stay here again and would recommend

Room Tip: Would say sea view as balcony had the sun from morning to afternoon.

We stayed for a week at the hotel on a half board package. The hotel itself was very modern very clean and well maintained.
There was a lovely patio area with outside pool plus an indoor pool with jacuzzi.
We had a twin room on the 5th floor overlooking the sea. Again the room was excellent with a multi Chanel tv. My only criticism was it faced a main road and traffic noise could be heard with the windows closed.
What did let the hotel down in my opinion and that of my party was the evening meal. The hot food was per cooked and kept warm in a Bain - Marie which did not keep the food adequately warm and nearly all the meals when taken back to the table were cold. Also drinking water was not supplied with the meal and this had to be purchased at an extra cost.
We did complain to the management regarding this and although we were given a complementary bottle of water the hot food did not improve much.

Room Tip: Choose a room to the rear if you want total quiet.

We have just arrived back from our stay at this hotel. We found the hotel perfect for us. Very clean and modern with a lovely pool area. We enjoyed the breakfasts and buffet dinners. We were upgraded to a twin sea view room with balcony which was lovely. The staff were helpful and attentive. It is a very peaceful hotel with not much going on in the evenings. There are a few local bars 10 minutes walk away and it is very easy to walk into the centre of Funchal. I would definately stay here again. Just a small point, the temperature in the spa pool was a little too cool.

Room Tip: The room we had was on the second floor with balcony and sea view
