I chose this hotel because we were looking for somewhere smallish, low key and elegant and it definitely hit the mark. It's a perfect getaway if you want to avoid the high rises with, bars, entertainment and kids clubs (there are lots of other hotels in Funchal which provide exactly those things so it's a case of making sure you get what you're looking for.)

Location wise it is about half way between the Lido area and old town of Funchal, both Reids and Cliff Bay are just down the road. Although it's a bit hilly, you can walk to loads of restaurants anything from 5 to 25 minutes walk away and a taxi from the town centre varied from about 5-7 euros.

Although we had only booked B&B, we enjoyed the restaurant so much we ate there several times on the a la carte menu and found the food, service and wine choices, especially by the glass, to be excellent and for a euro zone, quite reasonable. Breakfast was also very good with plenty of choice. Although there wasn't a bar, we had afternoon tea most days and again enjoyed the wonderful service and surrounds of the hotel. Reception staff as well were very knowledgeable and everyone seemed to be able to switch between fluent English, German and French with ridiculous ease.

We booked the standard garden room and although we've stayed in more spectacular rooms, it was extremely comfortable, spacious and quiet, I also liked being able to step straight outside onto the loungers looking onto the gardens. There was plenty wardrobe space so we could unpack properly and the usual facilities of mini bar, TV, robe, slippers and safe.

Overall this hotel exceeded my expectations and we'd definitely go back. If there is just one thing I could suggest, the sun loungers by the pool are a bit uncomfortable and past it and could do with being replaced with the same ones they have outside the rooms.

My wife and I have just returned from an autumn break at this hotel. It is set in beautiful grounds, the facilities and food are excellent and the staff were without exception friendly and helpful.

The majority of the other guests were mature couples of various nationalities rather than families.

The only downside (for which the hotel can't be held responsible) is that if you intend to eat on the restaurant terrace or sit outside at the deck bar in the evening, take plenty of insect repellent and bite cream!!

You will not be disappointed if you choose this hotel. Great facilities, lovely gardens and fantastic staff. Aside from our own experience, all locals who asked where we were staying (tour guides etc) reflected on what a nice hotel we had chosen. Its a little way out of town, but still close enough to walk (its down hill) and the local bus service is excellent.

Stayed here on a bed and breakfast basis, having selected the hotel for its grounds and comfort and modernity. In contrast to Funchal's brash yet down-market multi-stories, this is a civilised oasis. The rooms were mostly on the groundfloor, each with patio doors opening onto patio leading to the carefully maintained grounds, which are planted with trees (including many rare species), birds of paradise, hibiscus and many other lovely flowers, attracting butterflies. The pool area was quiet (there were no children) and uncrowded, with very clean wcs.
Rooms were comfortable, with modern furnishings and very clean, although the air conditioning was not as cold as it might have been.
The outdoor restaurant was a joy for breakfast, offering an ample selection of hot and cold food, while afternoon tea on the Colonial style decked area was a treat not to be missed. The separate restaurant serving evening meals was way beyond our price range (about €20 per head excluding drinks) and smaller portions did not appear to be available.
Lovely lounge and welcome gym.

We stayed at the Quinta Da Casa Branca for our honeymoon after much research and indeed reading reviews on Trip Advisor. It was perfect and everthing we had hoped for. The hotel grounds are simply breath taking and the hotel itself simply oozes contemporary class. The staff are amazing and incredibly genuine. We would recommend the afternoon tea and the various cakes that are served each day. Quinta da Casa Branca is not cheap but as is often the case you generally get what you pay for! Also the health suite which hardly anybody uses was an added bonus to our stay.

We stayed in Quinta da Casa Branca for our Honeymoon in August. It was perfect. The staff were wonderful, they made the visit feel so special; very friendly and professional. Nuno, at the front desk, was super, booking taxis and restaurants. We used the hotel as our base, we stayed for a week and spend a night in the North and a night on Porto Santo; our luggage was moved to our new room each time we came back. The rooms are luxurious, especially the king suite, plenty of room, a private balcony looking over the gardens. The hotel is the perfect size; big enough that it has a range of great facilities and services and small enough that the staff all know you by name. It is realy relaxing, with the gardens and tranquil pool you would never guess you were so close to the city centre. We will return to Madeira and we will be staying in the Quinta da Casa Branca. P.s. book yourself in for a treatment/massage at the Spa, and book yourself in for a tasting menu in the attached restaraunt ... a highlight of our stay!

Stylish and civilised hotel, with excellent staff ; restaurant staff in particular hit the right note - totally polite and helpful, but never obsequious or over-the-top. Genuinely lovely gardens. 'Ordinary' rooms perfectly comfortable ; rather than go for 'superior' rooms, might be best to choose a standard room (and bring your own laptop / CD player) but go half-board, because the evening meals are very very fine indeed. The half-board menu as it stands would be problematic for vegetarians but perfect for pescatarians ; superb fish every day, perfectly cooked. The fresh fruit, both at breakfast and at dinner, is marvellous. Perfect omelettes, freshly-made, at breakfast. Some mention traffic noise - small amount, during day, otherwise very peaceful indeed. Dogs ? None heard, except on the night there were fireworks down at the harbour. Brilliant view from the bar and reception area.
Location ? Easy 20-minute walk downhilll to centre, best diagonally via public gardens for final stretch down to sea-front. Thirty minutes from the hotel gets you to the fruit market, where we found the stallholders totally polite and helpful, even when faced with my four words of terrible Portuguese.
More like 30-minute walk back uphill from centre, 45 from fruit market... but there are buses (worth getting cheap Giro card) and taxis if you're laden or worn out.
Excellent little pool, shaded by bougainvillea and palm trees, with the thoughtful touch of a free delicious lemon-juice about 1pm.
The restaurant really is top-class, and was clearly satisfying several tables of French, German, Russian and British guests. The à la carte menu looked fancier and pricier ; half-board guests can take it and get 30% off, but there was always something on the six-dish half-board menu (two options per course) which appealled. Perfect veal saltimbocca, excellent salmon, parrotfish, seabass and other great fish dishes. Lovely to be able to eat outside every night, with fast and efficient service but able to linger as long as we wanted. House red and white both very good. Generally very peaceful, with quiet and civilised guests, not all couples. The few children, all clearly on their best behaviour, included some French kids being put through their holiday grammar homework by their parents, albeit in the shade of the bougainvillea, after their regulation sixty lengths. There is a very well-equipped gym + spa, but clearly nobody was using it at this time of year. By choosing only the fish dishes and skipping the (excellent) bread, you could in fact eat very healthily indeed here. Never have I eaten so much fruit and asparagus in one week. Brilliant. There is a large quiet 'library' room, very comfortable, where you may well find some pleasant surprises among the usual airport novels. There's free wi-fi in all rooms, not just in the 'superior' ones, and the pool closes at 7, not 6 - the info in the booklet in the rooms isn't up to date. Free use of mini-safe, also ; no need for 40-euro deposit.
We'll be back.
