“Excellent hotel, but a little different from the norm!”
Reviewed April 29, 2014

My wife and I have just returned home after a very enjoyable 10 day, half board stay including Easter. A very large 10 story hotel, with reception on the 4th floor entry level. We had a lovely superior sea view room on reception floor (4th). There are two very large lounges on the 4th floor, with modern furniture, decorated in black and grey - one of them outside our room. A similar lounge is situated on the 3rd floor, outside the excellent buffet restaurant. The "different" feature was that the lounges were not used at all during our stay- when we arrived we thought we had the hotel to ourselves! The hotel was in fact almost full over Easter, but one only met other guests in the restaurant. Very well located, with a reasonable walk into Funchal. There is an underground garage available if, like us, you have a hire car. Much less expensive to book a car online before arrival!

Room Tip: Superior rooms are very nice, with bath-robes and slippers - larger with two double beds.

The Vidamar (Sealife) Hotel ticked most of our boxes and overall is great value for money. My wife and I stayed the week before Easter 2014 and yes, we would revisit although having had a look at The Cliff Bay next door, you can see what a real 5 Star hotel is like - Vidamar management please pay a visit!
Rooms, bars, spa, public areas are all great. Whilst the pool area is functional it needs some TLC and upgrading to match The Cliff Bay which you can view with envy over the wall.
Food and restaurants are mixed. The Oceans Restaurant is the main restaurant which is buffet style and is great for breakfast, but falls woefully short of the hotels 5 Star claim for Dinner. There is a fall back however in that within the complex are 3 other restaurants which, on paying a supplement, offer more like the standard you would expect. It's just a shame that you have to recourse to doing this however. We ended up seeing the same faces during our stay following the same course of action, so we were very much not being overly picky. Some people were happy however with the buffet dinner which clearly shows that plastic, lower grade food meets 5 star expectations of some!

Staff were faultless, room was attended to exceptionally well, prices acceptable for the standard and the location superb. Great views and just outside the hotel is a livelier 'pub' The Hole in One which as can be guessed has a golf theme, live entertainment every night and also shows the main sports events. You can take a bus trip into Funchal for under 2 Euro and then get either the bus or taxi back. Ask for the terminus by the cable car to be handy for the old town and for that special night, seek out a most wonderful dining experience in the Armazem do Sol restaurant. Their tasting menu with inclusive wines is amazing both in quality and value.
Overall we would return to the Vidamar but only if the deal was right. We would probably go to B & B though!

Room Tip: Go high...

The Vidamar is a pair of glass slab blocks sited right on the cliff edge and just a few minutes walk westwards out of Funchal – almost next door to Reids. Our room was large and comfortable with a wonderful south-facing view across the Ocean. We watched the fishing boats and the cruise ships come and go, and every morning a replica of the Santa Maria set off westwards, though it returned each afternoon having yet again, I assume, failed to find the New World.

Staff were numerous, multi-lingual, very helpful and attentive. The food (we were on half-board) was varied and very good as mass catering goes, though it might have begun to pall a little if we had stayed a second week! Breakfast was splendid with the freshly made omelettes and bucks fizz option out on the sun terrace.

As a base for exploring Funchal and for trips around the Island it was an excellent location, with tour operators coming to collect, or there are several bus routes immediately outside on the street.

However, the hotel suffers from several stupid design faults. The spa, indoor pool and other leisure facilities are below entrance level and they give the impression of being rather tired and in need of a face-lift. The various options of lifts and stairs downwards, and confusing floor levels, are poorly signed; and the lengthy underground route down to the seafront terrace has black floor and wall and is poorly lit, with one of those systems where the lights come on as (indeed sometime after) you approach a series of sensors. This is gloomy/forbidding. They should throw a few Euros at a competent designer. Even the main entrance foyer rising up to enclose several levels of hotel corridor, could have a grand staircase feature rather than hiding the lifts and escape stairs somewhere out of sight.

The seafront terrace urgently needs to be refurbished. The bare concrete paving is old and worn with patched cracks. Some bright coloured floor paint and a potted palm tree or three would relieve the “municipal pool” feeling. The poolside ambience fails to compare with other of the nearby hotels that we visited. It would also be good to have tables and bar service right out on the pier.

If football is a game of two halves, then the Vidamar is a hotel of two halves: street level and above is great but going down into the leisure area a bit grim. It rescues four stars, in my view, because of the staff, the room and the location.

Room Tip: Everything seems to have a sea view.

If you have ever stayed in a 5 star hotel before you will soon realize this isn't one of them. That being said it is a great hotel. The location is great if you are mobile, if not it is a bit of a walk to Funchal old town but Taxi fare is only about 5 euros. We walked in and taxied back. Taxis are everywhere in Funchal. The breakfast buffet is really good, the dinner buffet is hit or miss. You need to get there early, otherwise forget it. If you plan to dine after 8:30 do the dine around as they close half the buffet after that time. We only ate at the Mamma Mia…it was very good. The staff is very helpful and friendly. There is a lot to do there but, we didn't partake in any activities as we had other outings going on but we saw the Easter egg hunt they did for the kids…very cute. I would stay there again. Only thing I would bring next time is my own pillow..choices small and hard or big and harder.

The Hotel is in a good position set back off the busy main road.. Had a lovely room on the 10th floor with a balcony overlooking the sea. Its quite a long walk into Funchal but the buses are easy to get and run every 10 minutes. The hotel is very clean and clinical no comfy chairs in reception for coffee just low level leather couches and no coffee.
The food was disappointing in the buffet restaurant I've had much better in a 4 star, not enough choice and not all labelled which mattered to me as I have food allergies. Sometimes we skiped breakfast and had lunch in a little bar a 2 minute walk away called Bar Silenco which is very cheap and decent grub.

Room Tip: Get a deluxe sea view room on a high floor worth every penny.

Having stayed here a number of times over the last three years, our family enjoyed one of the best stays last week 15/04 - 22/04. On arrival the staff made us all feel very welcome, received superior room upgrade and loyalty card for discounted food & drinks in their restaurants.

The breakfasts were enjoyed by all with our three children enjoying the vast selection. The evening meals are highly recommended in the main restaurant offering an outstanding selection of starters, main dishes (at least five) dishes then the deserts. The theme changed every night offering traditional Maderian food, fish, Chef's Specials, BBQ which included salmon, local scabbard, pork, chicken and steaks. Local dancers complimented the meal on Monday evening.

I must say that the Staff were exceptional in the Dining room with tables cleared as soon as plates were finished, drinks and nothing was a problem - Sophia asked for a special mention

There is also a very nice Sushi restaurant, Mama Mia Italian & Sea food restaurant within the Hotel.

The hotel itself is immaculate bearing in mine all of the glass and my three year old (Hugo), our room was a task to the staff every morning, beds changed, fresh towels every day and spotless to return to (although not for long).

Indoor pool, spa, outside infinity pools, childrens sea water pool, Aqua Club for childrens craft, baking playing, etc

Well done to the Manager and his team - very enjoyable, we all wanted to stay longer and really looking forward to coming back.

Lovely hotel, on the airport bus route and mainline into funchal, but walkable in 25 mins. Our room had a fab view and balcony and the bed was really comfy. The staff were helpful, the spa was worth every penny. Make sure you have time to chill out after your treatments. The pools on the sea level are beautiful. Although the buffet is great make sure you try out the other restaurants on site. others have commented on this being difficult to find your way around - it is on the cliff and has two towers above reception (floor 4) and two to the sea platform lifts below floor 2. You can access the other side on floor two. If you have limited mobility it would be worth mentioning as some rooms are a distance from the lifts. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would go back.

Room Tip: Mention any mobility problems when booking anything in madeira.
