we have just returned from a lovely week in the Vidamar. excellent hotel, nothing to fault. all the staff were very friendly and helpful. we had a room on the 10th floor so lovely sea views. sea was pretty rough so didn't swim in the sea but pools were a delight. sea water pools without big waves. I would highly recommend both the Vidamar and madeira. What a lovely island. i suppose the only slight fault was that there was only one glass and one pair of slippers in the room all week. Not very serious. Loved the dressing gowns for going fora swim.

Room Tip: As long as you don't mind heights go for a high floor, spectacular sea views from there. 10th wa...

We stayed here for one week and were lucky to have great weather. Check in was welcoming and friendly. The hotel has a spectacular position and we found the architecture pleasing. Our room was spacious with a lovely view (7th floor) of the ocean and a big balcony. Great to have free wi-fi if sometimes erratic. We found the lighting in the room and the air conditioning to be inadequate. The room was kept clean by the efficient chambermaids. We used the safe in the room (a little temperamental) and paid the 6 euros for the minibar and fridge which was useful. TV has limited English channels - as can often be the case - no world service - but ancient sitcoms!

The bed was large and comfortable but we only realised later in the week that there was a plastic mattress cover on the bed which caused us to overheat - very annoying and unnecessary. The bathroom was large but most disconcerting with all those mirrors everywhere! The robes and towels were rather thin and worn as the hotel is still using many items from when it was CS Atlantic. The pool towels were actually much better quality. Lots of sunbeds and towels and brollies on terraces.

Food in the main restaurant was perfectly adequate for buffet fare and a theme night was offered each evening. Breakfast was very good too and especially enjoyed the cava (it is an aid for the digestion, of course). However, the orange juice was weak and watery, food could be hotter and the tea terrible - bring your own teabags if you like your cuppa. You get such great coffee usually in Funchal but in the hotel it is poor. It was nice to sit outside on the terrace but not always possible if tables had not been cleared. Staff could be a little bit precious about where they seated guests at meal times. The dining room is very big and lacks ambiance which results in a canteen like atmosphere. Drinks are expensive - it was 4.50 euros for a bottle of water! Tap water was refused by one waitress who stomped off with our glasses before we could order any wine. Never mind - we went to the Hole in One later on! and there are two supermarkets in the near vicinity.

We also dined in Mamma Mia - very good, Koi Sushi - beautiful restaurant, and the Tapas Bar - where the food was poor but the Fado was great. No problem booking for these or with the service given.

We have been to Madeira several times and to different hotels. The Vidamar would be near the top. However, there are some minor things which prevent it having a full 5* status. It does not provide a shuttle service, as do other 5* hotels in the area. There is only one bar for evening drinks and nowhere else except the vast areas around the lobby and reception which are not the most comfortable spots. The hotel ask you to give your trip advisor details before leaving so that you can rate them and be entered for a free holiday - we decided to decline this bribery! All in all - a good stay.

Delighted to return to this Hotel under new ownership and much improved customer experience, and an amazing new spa. Breakfast outside at sunrise was beautiful and the evening buffets exceeded expectation. Superb variety and relaxed setting.
Rafaela was superb on reception. Made full use of the spa, gym and tennis. Will be back.

Room Tip: Deluxe Room is a must for views and privacy. Great to watch the cruise lines at first light and even...

We were very impressed with the hotel in every aspect and could not fault the location and all the facilities it had to offer which were excellent including the superior room view waking up each morning to a stunning view of trhe sea.
All the staff we had contact with were all friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them and the management should be really proud of them.
We are sorry we only came for a week as would have loved to have stayed longer and look forward to our next visit

Room Tip: Superior Ocean View Room

We returned to the Vidamar to attend the International Bridge Festival, a year after our previous visit. The hotel is spacious and airy, with great views of the Atlantic from the bedrooms, the main restaurant and the atrium. The beds are comfortable, initially presented with an overlarge bolster cushion and one white pillow. We discarded the impractical bolster and requested further white pillows. We had no problem with noise in the bedroom - entirely quiet throughout. There were some minor signs of age: the door into the bathroom was difficult to close and some buttons on the safe has lost their numbers through wear. However, we were entirely happy with our stay. The bathing/sunbathing area is vast, with comfortable loungers, supplied towels and several pools. There is also access to the Atlantic for those brave enough. The breakfast is splendid, with a huge variety of hot and cold choices, also several freshly baked pastries and breads.

Room Tip: A high floor gives a better Atlantic view impression.

We are on our last day here at Vidamar and have to say we have had a great time. The views from our room on the 8th floor are fantastic, and how wonderful to fall asleep with the sound of waves providing the lullaby! The hotel staff are all very helpful and courteous, everywhere is clean and tidy, and there has never been a problem getting a really good sunbed right by the sea. The spa is brilliant. Personally, for me the outside pool water is too cold, but other people, including my partner didn't seem to mind much. There are a few things that could be improved, for example having a better wine list. The dine around option prevents 'buffet fatigue', but the sushi option is no good for vegetarians, Mamma Mia was alright but nothing special (and our pizzas were awful), the Tapas restaurant was dire and best avoided (and if you do go, don't expect a real paella). We thought the buffet was probably the best option and when we return, as we hope to, I think we'll stick with that.

Room Tip: As high as possible.

We were very impressed with the hotel and the facilities. The staff were efficient, friendly and so helpful. Vast breakfast buffet which was regularly replenished. The food, facilities and rooms were first class. We will recommend to friends and will stay again.
