“Great couple of weeks”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

Just back from 2 weeks in the Vidamar. We went Half board, find this easier with 2 young children (8 , 10) the dine around is a nice option , however you need to book 24hrs in advance for these restaurants, so used the buffet most nights, Our room should have been side sea view but we were upgraded by the always friendly reception staff a special thank you to Nelson and Vera, who greeted us when we checked in and knew we were celebrating our 15th Anniversary and on that date we arrived back at our room to Chocolate cake and Sparkling wine, which was a lovely touch .Side sea view rooms on the first 3 floors, which are below reception, which is on the 4th floor and are overlooking the garden area. Our room was spacious and very comfortable. It was kept immaculately clean; we had 2 Double Beds and a seating area along with the balcony with a beautiful view on the 7th floor. Breakfast buffet was great; there was always something to satisfy everyone. We were greeted most days as we entered by senior staff members and the breakfast staff could not have done any more, all the staff are a credit to this hotel. Our coffee pot was replenished with a smile as was the jug of hot milk that accompanied it. It is ideally located.20 minutes downhill walk to Funchal centre and the opposite direction you can walk to the lido which the kids enjoyed snorkelling watching the fish. We had excellent meals in the Mamma Mia, the hotel's Italian Restaurant which is directly in front of the main reception, this building also incorporates the large gym which has classes and equipment to suit all. There are several snooker tables , squash courts and table tennis in the hotel. Sun loungers galore by the pools and benches in the gardens to soak up the sun, we never had an issue finding sun beds, no matter what time of the day which is amazing during peak season. a perfect holiday in a great hotel ......we will definitely return.
Having seen the comments re internet provision, we had no issue and could stream movies with no issue; the Kids watched a little TV and allot of channels are in English including watching the Hollywood movie channel.
We did lavada walks from Paul de Serra to the waterfalls which were great and the children really enjoyed this about 10km in distance, also took to cable car up to the Botanic gardens which are amazing as is Monte. During our trip we covered most of the island , ideally we would have rented a car but none were to be had as all were pre booked, however with tours that cover everything we do not feel we missed out. You could also hire a taxi for half or whole days which will take you round the whole island and stop where you wish 70 – 120 Euro.
This is a lovely hotel and if i were to find a con , it would be that the only place to meet and have a drink in the evening at the hotel was the Piano bar which is a room and balcony to the side of Reception, in this way it seemed a little disjointed, no large communal area where kids and adults could mix in the evening and watch a show or just chat over a beer. However you can’t have everything and if you really wanted this you could walk just outside the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask in advance for 2 double beds if with the family, (Sofa bed mattress are very thin changed rooms...

My husband and I have just spent a week here at the Vidamar Hotel. The hotel is first class, extremely clean and immaculate. The room we had was on the 7th floor overlooking the sea with stunning views. Only complaint was that the complimentary tea and coffee sachets in the room are not replenished when used.
We were half board and enjoyed the dine around concept. only issue is that this has to be booked in the morning before and if going out on a trip was unable to book.
Staff have been very friendly, Maria in the buffet restaurant is always cheerful and helpful.
The pool area next to the sea is immaculate and the pool attendants work really hard, and nothing seems to be too much trouble for them.
We have really enjoyed our break and found the island to be stunningly beautiful and very clean. We look forward to returning in the future.

Room Tip: We were on the 7th floor, in a superior room overlooking the sea, very quiet and with stunning views...

Everything was great. The room was perfect, food was good (we were half board), pool and staff were great. For the price it could not be beat and it has one of the best pool/ocean set ups you can find on the island.

Would highly recommend Vidamar Hotel. Really couldn't have picked a better hotel. Location spot on, cleanliness & great buffet breakfast. The swimming pools are lovely & plenty of sunbeds. Plenty of restaurants outside the hotel & couldn't fault any of them, the food is fabulous & very reasonably priced. Happy tours is just up d road from the hotel, turn left as u come out of the hotel & u can book your trips here. A taxi to the old town is between €5 - €7, you can do the cable car from the marina, well worth it.

rooms open directly to the ocean, which is a terrific and quite original location
very comfortable and large rooms
warm and skilled service, very dedicated
very good breakfast
The spa is amazing, managed by DALILA and FILIPA, who are very professional and kind.
A minor drawback: a more powerful wifi network would be appriciated...

Room Tip: of course a room with view on the ocean

My wife and I have just returned from a very pleasant seven night, half board, stay at The Vidamar Resort Hotel, Madeira. We have composed this review back in the UK and I mention this as the Hotel is very keen to push the possibility of winning a free one week stay for residents who complete a trip advisor review, but the review must be composed and submitted DURING their stay! (surely this kind of thing is contrary to Trip Advisor policy).

So, the following is our honest and impartial opinion of the hotel and those facilities we used – not something which has been influenced by any kind of incentive. We booked our stay in response to an offer from one of the Internet sites which specialises in such things. The Hotel describes itself as five star and the exterior certainly gives that impression. The Hotel is modern and in an excellent location. The reception experience was excellent with friendly, courteous and helpful staff. We were on an early flight and so arrived at the Hotel at about 10.45am. It was much appreciated that a room was quickly made available for us. The room was a good size with a large and comfortable bed. Everything in the room worked, including the air conditioning, which was effective and quiet. Standards of cleanliness and décor were excellent and the Maid service was consistently good throughout. The negatives are that the wardrobe was broken, with one edge being held together with parcel tape (this sounds worse than it really is, but for a self-described five star hotel – it’s not what you’d expect). The other negative is the hair dryer, which was one of the wall mounted, flexible hose type – you’ll have seen them before and this was simply very poor – I’d suggest taking your own. There is a minibar in the room, and to use it as your own personal fridge, you need to pay six euros to have it unlocked and the contents are all yours (pretty good value we thought). We asked that the fridge was not re-stocked and found it an efficient way of keeping our supermarket bought drinks cool – six euros well spent, but for a five star hotel – should this really be free?

Eating at the hotel was a pleasant experience and we elected to dine mostly in the Ocean Restaurant, where meals are of the buffet type. We were greeted most mornings by a very pleasant young man who always had a ready smile and tried hard to seat us somewhere of our choice. We thought that there was a wide enough choice for breakfast and the tureens were regularly refreshed/replenished. Evening meals were also good although we suspect that they do use quite a lot of salt in their preparation. The food varied by themed each evening and so the dining experience was always the source of pleasant expectation. My wife enjoyed some of the food to a lesser degree than I did, but dining preferences are always a matter of personal taste and we thought the hotel did well. The Ocean restaurant has a lovely terrace and it is worth asking to dine outside, but only if you can tolerate the casual attitude to smoking!!
As a half board guest one is also entitled to dine at no additional cost at one of four additional eateries operated by the Hotel. This option is called ‘Dine Around’ and must be booked at an office in the lobby 24hours prior to dining. We did this twice, choosing one night to eat Italian at Mamma Mia’s and on another occasion Barbecued Seafood down on the seafront. Mamma Mia’s was a very popular option and tables available to residents are often hard to come by. Frankly we were disappointed by this dining experience. We felt, as hotel guests that the staff of this restaurant regarded us as second class diners, they were inattentive (missing out the cover for instance) and somewhat patronising in attitude (perhaps they didn’t sense a big tip coming their way from half board residents!) However, on another night maybe things would have been different. The Barbecued Seafood experience was much better and although the food was set out buffet style, the location and atmosphere – along with the friendly staff more than made up for not having a la carte service.

The Gym is outside the main hotel building, but it is not far away. Inside it is clean, modern and well ventilated. I used one of the running machines each day and everything I used worked perfectly. The reception staff were excellent and the only thing that could have made things better would have been having a water cooler available (If you want a drink you have to buy one from a vending machine) - again for a five star I’d have expected a water dispenser of some sort.

So, would we stay at the Vidamar again – almost certainly if we could secure a similar deal to that we enjoyed on this occasion. Is it truly a five star hotel – in our opinion, not quite – but it is very good. Go, enjoy and make your own mind up.

Room Tip: All Ocean facing rooms appear to be good with excellent views. If you are a non-smoker occupying non...

This hotel is lovely, the view is spectacular and the service very good. The seaside deck is the best in the whole island. We also enjoy the location near Funchal and very good restaurants around.
The reception staff are amazing and we will come back again in this paradise.
This is a wonderful place to stay with all american/canadian standard of living which means quality, cleanliness and very good service.

Room Tip: Rooms are very clean and the hotel staff are very helpful
