“One week break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2013

We booked on a late deal to Madeira staying in the Vidamar Resort, Funchal. There were three adults (including my mother in law aged 82) and two teenage children (14 & 17) in our group and we had two rooms which were upgraded to superior sea view.

The accommodation was very spacious and comfortable with a large double bed on one room and the sae with a large sofa bed in the second. The bathrooms were large and there was a good sized balcony overlooking the three swimming pools and sea front.

The deal we booked was half-board and as the hotel has five restaurants (main buffet restaurant, Italian, Sushi, Tapas & Sea food restaurants) we were able to take advantage of their 'dine-
around' option which allowed us to eat once in the four restaurants and then the rest in the main buffet restaurant which had a different themed buffet each night (Madeiran, Brasilian BBQ, Portuguese, Italian & Mar). The food was excellent in every restaurant and he service was prompt and very friendly.

The Vidamar has three swimming pools, two outdoor (salt water) and one indoor (with a sauna, steam room and plunge pool). Although the hotel was full we never had a problem getting sun loungers by the outdoor pools and again staff were there to supply drinks and snacks.

The hotel has a very well equipped gym which we used daily and there was a good choice of exercise classes available, all included for free. My sons used one of the two squash courts and also the tennis court which again were available free of charge.

The hotel staff could not have been more helpful. My mother in law had an accident coming off the plane when we arrived and needed stitches for a nasty cut to her leg. We ended up in the local hospital for the treatment and the staff arranged for us to visit a local clinic to have the wound dressed twice in our stay.

The staff were also very helpful in helping us organise a sightseeing trip around the west side of the island and point out many places we had to see. Thee arranged the trip with a local taxi company which cost us 140 Euros for the full day. It was great value and we have many cherished memories.

I would definitely recommend the Vidamar Resort and Madeira as a place to holiday. There was something for everyone in our holiday and we will certainly be coming back again.

Room Tip: We had superior sea view rooms on the 9th floor. Great view and quiet.

We had an amazing time. The hotel itself was perfectly located, the service excellent, and the cleanliness second-to-none. Our room was spacious with a beautiful sea view and the choice of food in the various restaurants was excellent. Despite being vegetarians we didn't go hungry and would wholeheartedly recommend the Mamma Mia restaurant just opposite the main entrance to the hotel.
The reason for our visit was my wife's 40th birthday and on that day we returned to our room in the afternoon to find a bottle of champagne and a chocolate cake had appeared - a fine example of the attention to detail that the staff here pay.
On that note I would like to give a huge thank you to all the receptionists, the portering staff, the domestic staff, and catering staff for making our stay extra-special.

Room Tip: As all rooms face the sea I can only imagine that all the rooms are equally good. However we were on...

We are currently staying at the hotel and frankly can't see how anyone can complement the place for its food. Granted, the burgers at lunchtime are fine but the buffet food is not good. We are pleased to have come b&b so we don't feel obliged to use the hotel restaurants which we found the Flamenco to be the best. We tried Mamma Mia and were very disappointed. May be those who are on the deal do not get the chance to try some of the really excellent restaurants in the neighbourhood. I would recommend any one staying here to choose half board with caution. The hotel staff are really good and friendly and the rooms are very spacious though I would challenge the term spotless. In our room which is an ocean view on the ninth floor there has been drink stains on the balcony which were here when we arrived. However, overall the cleanliness is okay. For all the ladies with long hair, do remember to bring your hair dryers. The hotel uses those useless fixed on the wall ones with a plastic hose. My wife says they take ages to dry and offer very little power..
The views from the balcony are spectacular with clear view to the horizon. But, again the hotel lets itself down by providing poor uncomfortable seats and no loungers on the balcony. I would also add we do find the bed though large to be hard and uncomfortable.
They do an excellent deal with the minibar whereby you can purchase the contents for 6 euros. This is just as well as they do not provide any cold water other than a bottle when you first arrive.
So, to round up on the plus side we have a great room and view, friendly staff, great poos and a location which is away from the hustle of Funchal but not too far. But on the minus side we have poor food, inadequate equipment such as hair dryers and balcony seating. Finally, there is very little in the way of entertainment. Lots of space but very few bar so it's like walking around a deserted city at times. Not much in the way of uk tv and no movies in your room to rent, so make sure you bring a good book or a very friendly SO.

Room Tip: Get an ocean view room on a high floor and make sure you don't go half board!

Hotel is well situated for access to Funchal, supermarkets and restaurants etc and sea views are amazing. One of the few hotels that has direct access to the sea. Modern buildings, spotlessly clean and well maintained. Our superior sea view room was spacious and bed large and comfortable. Air conditioning unit was the quietest ever experienced so very restful sleep. But best of all - the staff. All are polite, friendly and welcoming. We thought the food may be a problem - it usually is, being vegetarians - but there was choice and everything at breakfast and dinner was delicious. Mamma Mia restaurant was excellent. Have stayed in other 5 star hotels in Madeira and all in all, this has been the best. Our only regret- only having one week here!

Room Tip: Higher floor probably provides better view but all sea view rooms should be good.

Just returned from a very relaxing break in Maderia. Having never been before the hotel was in an excellent location for exploring but yet quite enough to not feel like you were in a busy tourist location. The place was spotless and the rooms where cleaned everyday - comfy beds which is a must for me and amazing poolside area - pressed towels await you everyday on lovely sun loungers. The dine around deal was also nice as you didn't feel like you where eating in the same place every night - although it is a set menu - unless you are eating in the buffet which has plenty of choice. Breakfast was amazing - everything you could think of including champagne!

Not much night life atmosphere inside the hotel so if you like a bit of that and live music there are plenty of bars a short stroll away - the hole in one pub is a good one, lots of good music and reasonable bar prices.

Overall I can not fault my stay and the staff where always friendly and eager to help, I would highly recommend this hotel - five star really means five star here!

We spent 1 week in a superior sea-facing room which was excellent, the views were fantastic. It is worth paying the extra. We loved the dine around experience although we did find the Flamingo restaurant to be below par, but special mention to the mama Mia restaurant as the food was excellent. The buffet food was also very good but found that there was no flexibility from the management if we wanted to go back to Mama Mia for instance a second time, we were prepared to pay a premium but we were told 'No'. They did not really understand that we wanted to pay a little extra for a waiter service on our last night! Perhaps they could tale this on board. Having said that they were especially good when catering for our 3 year old boy who does not eat anything other than chicken goujons and fish fingers, oh yes and ice cream!

The hotel itself was in really good order and very clean. The swimming pool area was good and plenty of towels etc. It was a shame there was a not a bit more grass as the swimming pool area is just concrete. The indoor swimming pool area does look a bit tired and could do with a lick of paint, but I personally did not use this area.

We didn't use the children's area but it sounded very good and also secure. The hotel is a half hour walk from the centre of town and a taxi is around 7 euros.

Overall we would definitely stay at the hotel again, to summarise the food was very good as was the room. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Go for superior sea-facing, high floor

Modern spacious 5 star hotel, in a fabulous location. Great views of the ocean and pool area from all rooms. Staff are all helpful, courteous and friendly. We really enjoyed the dining around option with the different types of restaurants, which gave plenty of choice on where and what we could eat. I am hard pushed to find anything wrong with the service and amenities. Lovely spa facilities and great diving school. I cannot recommend any more highly.

Peter J

Room Tip: All rooms have great views of the ocean. Try the higher floors to get best effect.
